“This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty – “The Jose Guillen To The Mets Edition?” 11-25-09

Well I woke up this morning and I decided to check out Adam Rubin’s blog for The Daily News and I felt a little bit of bile creep up towards the back of my throat. Rubin is reporting that Jose Guillen would approve a trade to our beloved Metropolitans for fourth outfielder Angel Pagan. Guillen is quoted as saying “ If trading me would help the Royals, New York would be one of the clubs that I would approve.” Guillen goes on to say that he has started a rigorous training program and that he is focused on having a great season in ’10. Rubin still believes this trade is a long-shot to happen. All I can say is “GULP!” I’d rather take my chances on Nick Evan in left field than Guillen. Guillen’s talents have eroded quite considerably over the past few years , and his attitude is more Vince Coleman than Marlon Byrd – he is well known as a clubhouse cancer ! in my opinion Omar would be a fool to entertain the thought of this trade – and a imbecile if he executes it !

                                                                           the Enjoyment: Jose Guillen ...

” Is  he bound for Flushing?”?”

And now its time for the INFAMY !!!
Happy Birthday wishes go out to journeyman utility infielder Chico Walker (1958).
Relief pitcher – Shingo Takatsu is 41(1968) . He came from ourCatch Our Rising Sun’sera when we imported Japanese talent – just not good Japanese talent !
One time pitching phenom turned journeyman reliever – Octavio Dotel is 35 (1975). I remember him being lights out in his stint with the Mets in ’99 but he did help net us Mike Hampton from the Astros . Dotel had a few good years with Houston – until he injured his arm. He has been used as a middle reliever for the bulk of his career , and the Mets might be interested in his services for next season.

New York Mets traded starting pitcher – Paul Byrd to the Atlanta Braves for reliever – Greg McMichael on November 25, 1996. I kinda forgot that Byrd spent a couple of years with the Mets ( ahh the joys of alcohol and bad Mets teams -the alcohol makes it easy to forget them ) .

New York Mets released pitcher Doug Henry on November 25, 1996.
And remember kiddies – There are only 131 gut wrenching more days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

Yesterday there was a ton (no pun intended) of discussion on Cabrera’s character. This guy is a maniac compared to him. He is a professional hitter and I don’t normally get too hung up on the negative character stuff but I want nothing to do with him or Bradley.

    No way jose

Agreed, no part of Guillen, please. If the Mets do decide to go the route of questionable character guys (which I wouldn’t have a problem with), at least get a questionable character guy who’s skills aren’t declining.

And rehashing the yesterday debate, I’d sell the farm for Halladay, but wouldn’t for Miggy. I don’t see omar selling the farm for anyone, honestly.

Omar, please stick with the mentioned rumors of Harang/Arroyo and Phillips.

I don’t think you would need to sell the farm for Miggy. I top tier pitcher has more value than a top tier hitter and Miggy’s contract is crazy.

As much as I would welcome Miggy (as long as the team can secure a top Pitcher), I would do the Harang/Arroyo and Phillips in a heartbeat. Makes so much more sense financially and it would give the team flexibility to fill the bench and allow them to keep the farm.

Exactly! What worries me is that most would agree that if Omar doesn’t make the playoffs or have a strong team this year, he is in jeporday. I fear he may sacrifice the future for the short term, as all he has is the short term.

First of all, I’d like to wish all a
    very Happy Thanksgiving!
Now, re: this rumors,if it has any legs at all: Obviously this is not just a bad move BUT potentially a
disaster! Can 9 teams in 10 yrs be wrong? Mike Scioscia of all people
got to the point with him where even
in a pennant race, wouldn’t let him
    in the clubhouse any more.
Is there a more liked and respected Skipper than Scioscia?
I don’t like using the word for personal reasons BUT this guy is a cancer.
Now, if it meant getting rid of Castillo’s and/or Ollie’s contract(s),
well then , maybe, just maybe you
can accept him back as part of a multi-player deal and hold your breath that everything else in the
    deal goes well.
BUT Pagan for Guillen straight up???
C’mon!…While I’m not great Angel Pagan fan,I think he’s no more than a
4th OFer,hes still fairly young, not making any money and most important…
    Not a lazy lunatic!
Further, after all the injury problems last year, we’re gonna take
on an oft-injured dog of a player who
missed most of last season AND
who as It was pointed out above skills
    we’re fading before that??
Additionaly, if Omar didn’t know all this already, shouldn’t the fact that
    the seriously cash-strapped Royals
are willing to take back a 4th OFer
AND THROW IN A FEW MILLION GREENBACK’S in complete the deal
indicate to him that some’s seriously
    wrong with Jose Guillen???
The only good part of this is that,
we may look back at this deal, if it happens, as the straw which broken
the camels back and finally got Omar
    fired.
    Again, Happy Thanksgiving and much
    respect to everyone here!
Be safe getting to where you’re all
going and enjoy your turkey and football!
    Lets Go Mets!!!

so fongy, how do you really feel?

One thing though with the Mets FO (at least as I interpret the current arrangement from various posts).

It almost seems that no moves can come back to bite Omar, since Jeffy, etc. are calling the shots (or at least signing off on the shots). So, if a move goes south, can’t really blame Omar. Unless, of course, they just have him to be the fall guy (but they could have done that already).

Hmm, maybe that is jeffys plan. Keep the guy on thin ice, so if your play acting as GM bombs, you have the patsy all ready to fire, then you hire a real GM and get your fingers out of the pie!

So I’ve been thinking about the First Base situation. There’s lots of options this year.

You have free agents Johnson, LaRoche, Branyan, Huff, Blalock, Delgado and others.

Then there are trade candidates Overbay, Cantu, Garko, Kotchman, Jacobs and others.

Or we can stay in house with Murphy who performed better in the second half though he needs to improve digging balls out of the dirt.

If you go w/ any of the trades it won’t cost much in prospects unless you’re talking about Gonzalez or Fielder who probably won’t be traded now.

If you go w/ one of the free agents the max it’ll cost will be approx. $8M per year on a 2 year deal.

Question is, do you spend that $8M on a LaRoche or Overbay or do you spend it on either a high upside pitcher like Bedard or a guy like Wolfie or Marquis?

To me, it depends on how we improve in LF and if we get Doc or Lackey. If we get a “power bat” in LF, then staying w/ Murphy is ok. If we get Doc or Lackey, we don’t need another SP and can upgrade at 1B too.

So really, I see it as you can upgrade at 3 of 4 spots (SP#2, other SP, LF and 1B).
