As a fan of Justin Duchscherer, I was pleased to read that tidbit about him hoping to be close to his ex-wife and child in New Jersey.

Saito Close To Deal With Braves
By Mike Axisa [December 3 at 1:16pm CST]
Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com reports that free agent reliever Takashi Saito is close to signing a one year deal worth $3MM with the Braves.
Saito, 40 in February, had a 2.43 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 55.2 innings with the Red Sox last season. He has a 2.05 ERA with a 10.9 K/9 in his four years in MLB. Atlanta was rumored to be looking for a setup man to complement new closer Billy Wagner, especially with Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez likely headed for greener pastures.

At the start of the free agency period, apparently Frank Wren sat down with his staff and came up with a “let’s get older versions of Gonzalez and Soriano for next year” plan.

heh heh. Sure seems that way.
This would be an awfully injury prone late game relief staff, even moreso than the injury prone but effective duo they already had.

BA’s John Manuel ranks the Mets farm system (he emphasizes star talent over quantity) in the 16-25 range, noting “Solid top 10, but the Mets don’t have anyone likely to help in New York in 2010.”

I had read that and am not ashamed to admit to being proud they weren’t in the bottom 5.
As far as “solid top 10 but none likely to help in 2010″ I guess that means, assuming he utilizes fellow BA writer Adam Rubin’s top 10, he is expecting nothing worthwhile from Josh Thole or Jon Niese next season.

That would seemingly include Fernando Martinez too, who only had 91 at bats last season and still qualifies as a rookie.

Good point. Sadly I’m so jaded that I noted his presence on the list but didn’t include him in my comment because I’m not counting on anything from him in 2010, which is almost insane when considering the Mets current LF status, I mean it’s not like he’s blocked, right now he’s almost the default starter and he’s certainly in-house option # 2 after Pagan. Sigh.
