Rich Harden To Sign With Rangers
Deal calls for only 6.5 million next year with incentives that could bring the deal up to 10 million. It also includes a mutual option for 11 million with a 1 million buyout. Deal is contingent on a physical.

Totally unrelated, I was looking at the mlb.com list of players who might possibly be selected in tomorrow’s rule 5 draft and I am making my wild guess that the Mets will select…
Kansas City relief pitcher Chris Hayes. He’s a sidearmer, and the Mets always seem to like a sidearmer around (Sean Green, are you still here?).

well, they made a smart pick last year.
Too bad Omar and his incredible botched roster management screwed that up.
wonder if one of the 5 new guys (krivsky maybe?) actually understands how to handle the ML roster to avoid losing guys like that?

now this one I mind. He was on my wanted list. 6.5 (well, 7.5) minimum guaranteed seems like a good deal, considering that proven stiffs are getting more than that, and it is only 1 year commitment. At least harden as upside!
IMO, he was the best (or at least healthiest) of the incentives bunch. Who knows if sheets can even pitch, and barard doesn’t sound like a good idea.
Still dont really want marquis or pienero. Hard for me to do, but of the “reliable” guys, Garland (if reasonably cheap) actually seems to be the best looking option.

I think Garland and Marquis is a toss up depending on who is cheapest.
Harden I think would have been a great addition IF we signed Lackey. Johan, Lackey, Harden would have had a lot of potential.

I still prefer neither one.
If these stiffs are going to get Wolf money (pushing 10), try to get someone like Arroyo or harang on a salary dump. Very little extra cost in 2010, no future exposure, and by taking the salary hopefully come for just low level non-prospects.
better pitchers for less LT cost, makes sense to me.

I’d take Garland over Marquis because Garland relies a bit less on GB outs than Marquis, and because Garland walks slightly fewer batters per nine than Marquis, because Garland is the more reliable of the two over their careers to take the mound every 5th day, and because Garland’s career second half numbers are only a small bit worse than his career first half numbers, showing that he is more consistent over the course of a full season and doesn’t fall off a cliff in the second half like Marquis.
Both Marquis and Garland benefit from high run support throughout their careers, though Garland has only led his league in it once and Marquis has twice, but both of them have never been below 35th in their respective league in run support since 2004.
Garland’s career has been mostly in the AL where his ERA is 4.47, it is 4.01 in the NL for a 4.42 overall.
Marquis has spent his entire career in the NL which has no DH yet his career ERA is 4.48.
I think those are some valid reasons to choose Garland over Marquis if the financial and year commitments are close.

well, whereever I saw the concept of trading castillo for Lowell, scrap that.
Boston just turned him into a young C (max ramirez). All they had to do was eat Lowells salary!
The Rangers have been busy so far.

screw it. I am officially on the get Holliday bandwagon (when he has to settle a bit) and passing on Lackey.
Until, of course, I change my mind.
Just no Maine deal, and pass on Marquis.

So the Mets should just stick with Santana/Pelfrey/Perez/Maine/Nieve?
