Today, my Yankee friend walked up to me with a big smile on his face and presented me with the cover of the New York Post. On the cover of the Sports Page was a picture of Curtis Granderson. So naturally I did what every self-respecting Met fan would do.
I punched him in the solar plexus…hard.
He laughed and walked away.Â
Later on in the day I received a phone call from my father, another Yankee fan, he went on to tell me not only of the Granderson trade, but on Omar’s latest move…According to my father Omar had moved from the Indoor pool into a nice sauna.
It has been a tough two days.Â
In my opinion, Omar can do whatever he wants to during these meetings. He just has to make sure he lands either Lackey, Holliday or Halladay. Tall order huh? I’m not concerned about tomorrow or the next day’s annnouncement about the signing of Molina,  because let’s be honest,  you can never have enough catching.
But as long as the Big Three are still our there, unsigned, I won’t give up. I don’t think the Mets need to sign one these free agents to steal the back pages or to just make a splash. They need these players because they REALLY NEED one of these players.Â
Last year at this time, Omar had already acquired K-Rod and J.J. Putz so I’m willing to stick by him and see what he does in the coming days/weeks. The free agent market is slow and I’m sure that Omar will take his time and wait to see what develops.Â
So as much as I want to push panic button and hit another Yankee fan. I’ll stay controlled and wait and hope that Omar comes through. Stay patient fellow Met fans, stay patient.

nice stuff gonzo
I’m fine with the waiting game, figure one will “fall” into Omar’s lap and it may even happen in the sauna.

I understand what you are saying but What are we waiting for? Lets say we don’t sign anybody big this year who thinks the Yanks,RedSox,Phillies and maybe Dodgers won’t go after the big players at the end of 2010 and 2011 .What makes anyone think that the Wilpons will outbid the Yankees and Redsox’s in 2010 ,2011 or beyond so yes lets we can try to have more patience but if they miss the boat this off season they will get hurt in there pockets Ticket sales are very slow right now

Well, when no one is making big offers and Scott Boras is basically begging the Mets to make one, waiting is the prudent thing to do, no?
And ticket sales are slow because it is December, right?
And what does “Redsox’s” mean exactly?

Payments for season tickets were due Dec 4 and from a few tweets by beat writers said that the Mets told them that its been slow Yes I know it is early with that What I am trying to ask is what are the Mets waiting for? I want them to move already every night on Mets hot stove whenever Omar was on it seems like he does not want to be there

Metfreak, Omar is waiting just as he did last year, when he sgned KRod for just over half of what he was originally asking.
With the economy, and the meager–if any–offers for Holliday right now, I think one of either Holliday or Lackey will come to us, and for a lot less than first thought.
Remember, Omar has bagged Pedro, Beltran, Delgado, Santana, Wagner, and KRod, and I think he will again wind up with one of the big names.
At this moment, I think it will be Holliday for much less than Boras fantasizes about.
Lackey is going to stay in LA and Bay is going to Boston or Seattle (I hope.)

And I am a Met freak too, and have been since 1973.

I will be fine if they can get Holliday for a reasonable (but obviously still high) amount.
5/90 might be a lot of money, but it isn’t going to kill them. Is he really likely “worth” it? Probably not, but he is still a good player. And certainly makes the team better.
heck, if they did sign up Holliday tomorrow, there are still a ton of options for making more improvements!

obviously Metfreak wanted Polanco and Figgins and Penny and Harden and Wagner and Saito.

No I didn’t want those guys but it is kind of funny how The Mets said that they were going to be big players this off season and they still might but today was the first time I heard them talking to the agent for Lackey and Holiday and this is because players like Wolf and Penny were getting more then the Mets thought they would so that freak them out

Yeah, but who wants Wolf and Penny?
We are going to have Lackey or Holliday.

Who else has talked to Lackey or Holliday? Again, this is silly. Re-read the post. Be patient. When it gets April and we have not signed anyone you have my blessing to jump.

well, the yanks always go after big names, But IIRC they don’t have the slew of big contracts expiring they usually do this year, do they? Not that it likely stops them, but who knows, maybe they have to maintain payroll?
And the Phils are already maxed out, and have a ton committed for 2011, especially if they re-up Lee (and Werth).

Gonzo, I think I sort of agree with you . I think.
first, you need to stop associating with yankee fans. I think you will be happier.
2nd, I agree that they don’t need to rush (patience is a virtue), but I disagree that it is one of those 3 or bust.
What Omar needs to do is improve the talent level on the team, without exceeding his budget, and without mortgaging the future too badly.
But, there are plenty of other talented players around, some of which a smart GM (I know, we got Omar..)
so, even if they don’t get halladay, holliday or lackey, they can easily improve the weak areas and be perfectly competitive next year.
Getting too hung up on a few names is what a lot of people accuse Omar of doing, and it isn’t really a good way of doing business. Unless you want more Ollie deals.

I agree with you, the yankee fans are killing me. and I know I’m hung up on Lackey a bit but at least I hope that when Omar decides to do something…it will be reasonable.

one advantage to living in far south Jersey. I only have to put up with Phillie fans.
I also agree 100% with your last point. I too hope that when Omar finally does something, it makes sense, and doesn’t completely deep six the future.

Even though omar did say they would be active, i don’t think anyone promised doing it at the beginning!\
if the expected glut of non-tenders happens, there is soon to be an over abundance of available palyers, meaning good buys to be had, and some guys are going to be ung out to dry for those last minute shoppers.
The other aspect to the market that hasn’t gotten started (beyond the Granderson deal, and now Millwood) are all the guys teams are trying to move to free up money. Cinci, KC, and other teams still haven’t made trades that keep being mentioned that they are hoping to make.

Hey Stickguy, here’s a question. Who is the problem, Omar or the front office? I think it’s the front office that limits him from doing anything reasonalble. I know he has made some dumb moves(Castillo, perez) but you and I know that this team needs a number 2 starter. Omar has to know that…right? You think the Wilpons are holding him back?
My guess is yes.

12/9/2009-10:18pm at 10:18 pm (UTC -4)
I don’t think the owners keep him from doing any particular moves, other then the few situations (say, Manny, or maybe Bradley) where there are PR issues involved.
Yes, they give him the budget to hit, but given what that is, it certainly can’t be said to prevent anything “reasonable”.
I guess you have to define reasonable though. maybe Jeffy won’t sign off on trading the guts of the farm for Halladay, or maybe that is Omars choice?
And unless you think Lackey is the real #2 and Omar was told he can’t look into him, what has he missed out on? There are also other pitchers comparable to Lackey that could still be had.
I just don’t think this FO (Omar and the others) really has mastered the “vision thing”, and don’t look at the big picture of investing in the foundation of the team the way they should.

I’m hoping the Mets land Holliday and then sign Pineiro and possibly Ben Sheets for the rotation. Not too keen on Marquis. I’d love both Lackey and Holliday, but that’s a pipe dream. I’m resigned to the fact that Bengie Molina will be the catcher, but having two low OBP guys (him and Francoeur) would only increase the need for another high OBP guy like Holliday. Assuming they sign Molina and are able to snag Holliday, I’d stack the lineup like this: Reyes, Castillo, Holliday, Beltran, Wright, Francouer, Murphy, Molina. Keep Molina in the 8th spot because he’s a base clogger and you break up the two low OBP guys. If they go with Murph at first, I expect a better year from him, probably in the .280 range with 15-plus homers and 80 RBIs. I think he’ll draw more walks as long as Manuel leaves him the hell alone. Want no part of Nick Johnson or any of the weak 1B options out there right now.
