This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 12-09-09

You take it on faith
You take it to the heart
The wait is the hardest part

- Tom Petty                                                                     New York Mets Coaches Watch

                                                                                           ”WELL ? WERE WAITING !!!”

Well I think those lyrics that Mr. Petty sang nearly a quarter of a century ago holds a lot of truth with all of us Mets fans this hot stove season. Whether it is the ever changing reports that Omar is signing Robinson Cancel’s doppelganger Bengie Molina to a one or two year contract , or to the reports that we are not in on Bay, Holiday or Lackey that suddenly change at a moments notice to say we are going full bore for their services !!! It’s enough to make this blogger want to drink himself into oblivion until Opening Day !!

Anyway … HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!
Birthday wishes go out to one of the few bright spots of the Mets outfield during the abysmal spirit of ’76 season – Del Unser (1944)
Mets Pitcher from ’74- ’75 -Jerry Cram is 62 ( 1947)
Mets pitcher from ’77 – Doc Medich is 61 (1948) . If you blinked you missed his only appearance , earning the loss.
Fan favorite, and all around scrub infielder from those late ’70′s nightmare teams – Bruce Boisclair is 57 (1952).
Happy Birthday to Frank Cashen’s biggest mistake – Juan Samuel (1960) . It still boggles the mind how we could trade both Lenny Dykstra and Roger McDowell for that steaming load of crap !!!
Pitcher , Mike Fyhrie is 40 (1969) .
The man who not only liked playing on natural grass , but enjoyed smoking it – Tony Tarasco is 39 (1970) . Thinking back on Tony’s tenure with the Mets ( 2002) makes me wish I had a joint burning all through the ’09 season.
Outfield prospect that never was – Jeff Duncan turns 31 today (1978) .

New York Mets released Donn Clendenon on December 9, 1971. I am sure this was a particularly sad day for mets fans since he was the key acquisition that propelled the ’69 Mets to their first World Series title.

New York Mets traded outfielder, Leon Brown and first baseman, Brock Pemberton to the St. Louis Cardinals for minor leaguer Ed Kurpiel on December 9, 1976.

New York Mets traded infielder,Roy Staiger to the New York Yankees for utility infielder, Sergio Ferrer on December 9, 1977.

New York Mets traded reliever, Blaine Beatty to the Montreal Expos for outfielder, Jeff Barry on December 9, 1991.

Montreal Expos drafted future Armondo Benitez clone – Guillermo Mota from the Mets on December 9, 1996.

I know we ended up getting David Wright – but on this day a truly INFAMOUS transaction was made ! The Colorado Rockies signed Mike Hampton of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 9, 2000. And the Colorado School System was never the same again !!

New York Mets signed free agent Julio ” Father Time” Franco of the Atlanta Braves on December 9, 2005. One year of Franco was fine – why Omar signed him for a second at the age of 47 left me to ponder my own existance !

And don’t forget – There are just 117 more days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field !!

I saw and heard Heyman say that Cashman is meeting with the BlueJays and the Agent for Lackey .If the Yankees gets either player then I really think its time for baseball to step in I know the Yankees are playing by the rules but how long do fans of all other teams have to watch year after year the Yankees going after all the good players .

Exactly why I would love to see the Yankees trade for Halliday.

I understand what you mean but nothing would get done sad but true

The NFL and the NBA do it right.

MLB does just about everything wrong in this regard.

doesn’t help when Cashman fleeces other GM’s like for Swisher last year and Granderson this year.

I appreciate that you left it non-specific because I think it was the DBacks he fleeced, not the Tigers. But there was still fleecing nonetheless.

The more I think about it, the more I believe the Yankees are not the problem, the problem is other teams making bad decisions with contracts that they can’t afford. The Yankees are the enabler in this scenario, the other teams are the addicts.

yup, I wish Omar did some of that enabling.

        2. wannybackstra

I think the Yankees gave up some value in the deal. And I think Granderson is overrated.

Still a good move for them.

And a good one for Detroit.

But what the hell was AZ thinking? I think Scherzer will be as good or better than Jackson as soon as…now.

          1. GravediggerHebner

From what I’ve read AZ is fairly convinced that Scherzer will be a short reliever, that’s the alleged justification in trading Scherzer for a young SP.

          2. fongy2

Detriot is the big winner in that trade.
They got a potential front line starter,a potential closer
and a CFer.All among the top 2or3prospects from the team they were rec’d from.

Rusty, I love ya BUT you’re driving
me crazy with these matt-like mistakes!…Boisclair was an OFer!
    #4 as I remember…But he was a scrub

Those lyrics are a 1/4 of a century old? Dang, time sure does fly….

O.K., we’re heading into Thursday of these winter meetings already. I really thought we’d come away with at least one signing that doesn’t include a damn catcher.

    Clock is ticking….
And yes, I’m starting to get antsy about it.
