This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty – The Are You Listening Fred & Jeff ? Edition 12-14-09

Dejection - A state of melancholy depression -see Mets Fan.
Well the proverbial poop has hit the fan in Mets town, and I think Mets ownership has fled for their fall out shelter under Citi Field to avoid the advancing horde of disgruntled Mets fans. If you are listening to WFAN right now you can feel the disenchantment of the fan base oozing like a infected sore on Brian Schneider’s thumb ! I personally am seething right now – I know the Mets had little shot of obtaining the services of Roy Halliday , but Omar not even placing a bid on John Lackey is inexcusable !!! I don’t think I am being out of line when I say that this front office has proved time after time that they have a tendency to be clueless. But even if we get Jason Bay and Bengie Molina ( which are solid acquisitions in my opinion) we will still have a gaping hole in our rotation and I am sorry to say but neither Jason Marquis nor Joel Pinero are the answer. Look I know even if we had obtained Lackey we would have other areas on the roster to fill, but at least we would have had one of the best two starting pitchers in our now anemic rotation. Yes Opening Day is four months away but unless Omar can pull off a hell of a trade , it will look like we will have 95 % of the same roster that we had last year . Now does that give you a feeling of confidence? Mets Ownership are you listening? Your fan base is calling !!!

” Note to the brain trusts…  WAKE UP !!”

And now it’s time for some more INFAMY !!!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to back up catcher from the early ’70′s – Jerry May (1943) .
Back up catcher from the mid ’60′s – Greg Goossen is 64 (1945) .
Mets batting coach from ’05 – ’07 , and friend of Willie Randolph – Rick Down is 59 (1950) .
Sadly on this date on 2004 Mets outfielder from the early ’60′s – Rod Kanehl passed away. His all out style of play and his penchant for legging out extra base hits earned him the nickname ” Hot Rod ” .
Pitcher from the ’67 team – Nick Willhite passed away on this date in 2008.

Texas Rangers signed utility infielder Mario Diaz of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 14, 1990.

New York Mets signed free agent Lance Johnson of the Chicago White Sox on December 14, 1995. Great signing – that man could hustle !!!

Boston Red Sox signed pitcher Brad Clontz of the New York Mets as a free agent on December 14, 1998.

New York Mets traded washed up outfielder David Justice to the Oakland Athletics for pitchers Mark Guthrie and Tyler Yates on December 14, 2001. Funny that Justice never played a single game for the Mets.

“It’s tough being a Mets fan!”

And just remember , before you jump off that proverbial ledge – there are just 112 sickening more days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

    WTF????????????????????????????????????????????

    Is Omar even trying anymore?

  2. GravediggerHebner

Wow, I remembered that the Mets had Justice briefly in the off season, but I had no recollection that they ever had Mark Guthrie. Checked out the numbers and he actually had a good 2002. I guess I’ve blanked out the Jeff D’Amico era entirely.

I understand not being in on Halladay. Apparently, the NY Mets weren’t his first choice, nor probably his 10th choice. And contrary to many analysts I’ve been listening to today, even if it was, I would not have given up Reyes and change to get him, especially since there was no guarantee locking him up past 2010 was going to happen.

I’d really like to know the mindset on Lackey though. Didn’t want to overpay say, 100 MIL? O.K., I can understand that. But the price was 85 MIL. Still too much for Omar? Something scare him off? Lackey didn’t want to sign here? Omar has other irons in the fire he thinks are better?

Whatever it is, I’d like to know sooner rather than later.

      Problem is…Where ya gonna
      get the truth??…Omar???
      LOL funny!…Good luck with THAT!

  4. metfreak

O but wait its only Dec 14 its still early ..blah blah blah

    1. Kingman 26

Blah blah blah is indeed what your comments sound like to an adult.

      1. metfreak

Right because I have no faith in the Mets right now in getting a good player like I said before I have a nice bridge for sale

        1. Kingman 26

No, not because of that at all….because your comments sound like a whiny 8-year old who is following baseball for the first time.

Here’s a neat idea–go back and look at when we got Beltran and Johan and some other players, and if you can read a calendar, you might see it was not by Dec 14th.

  5. royhobbs7

    BTW,

Fred and Jeff do listen. That is why they offer lowball contracts (e.g., Jason Bay) which are not going to happen……

    1. stickguy

65 mill is lowball? ANd from all reports, it is the highest that Bay has gotten.

To be fair, I am sure you will also rag on Omar if he “bids against himself” and spends too muc, right?

    2. Kingman 26

Ah, Roy, thanks for putting your baseball AND economics IQ right after your name.

But your comments definitely do the job equally well.

4/65, when the only other offer is 4/60 is lowball.

You have won the stupidest comment of 2009 award!!

      Nice work!!

      1. metfreak

Are you getting upset that we are angry we the Mets?

        1. metfreak

          with not we

        2. Kingman 26

No, I just really detest whiny jackasses who know so very little, that’s all.

Metfreak—do you think defining a 4 year, 65 million dollar offer as “lowball” – when the only other known offer is 4 years and 60 million – is intelligent? Or completely idiotic?

          Think about it man….seriously!

          1. oleosmirf

well it depends. If you offer Bay 4 years 65 mil and you know he wont accept that then yes that is a low ball offer (regardless of the other offers are)

in this case I actually think this is a legit offer but we’ll see if they go higher…

          2. GravediggerHebner

I agree with you that it’s a legit offer as part of a negotiation process.

What I wonder is, how does anyone know whether he will accept it or not?

Making an offer to anyone assuming they’re not going to accept it is a dangerous game, especially when it’s to date the best offer they have received.

          3. oleosmirf

Suppose a player wants 6 years 120 million. You could offer him 4 years 65 million, knowing that he wont accept that, just to appease the fan base.

Then when another team outbids them, they can use the excuse….At least we made an offer…

          4. Kingman 26

Oleo–we offered 4/65 after Bay was offered 4/60!!

            Hello??

You are making up a totally irrelevant situation with zero connection with reality here man.

          5. GravediggerHebner

You can suppose “a player” wants 6/120 if you want to. I haven’t heard anything like that about Bay. All I know is his best current known offer is from the Mets.

If I’m at an auction and the starting bid on the thing I want is $60 million, I feel no need to say “$120 million” as the second bidder. $65 million seems like a more reasonable second bid.

It’s very, very cynical to assume the Mets don’t want Bay. The Mets may be a poorly run, laughing stock of an organization to many people, but even they are not so stupid as to think that a fake offer that results in no acquisition is going to “appease a fan base.”

          6. oleosmirf

im not talking about Bay…i was explaining how it is possible to make an offer just to appease your fan base.

          7. Kingman 26

By using a completely ridiculous, made-up example which has never happened as far as we know.

          8. Kingman 26

How would anyone know if he won’t accept? Is Bay in on this?

          9. oleosmirf

b/c his agent sets the initial negotiations!!!!

          10. trs86

The Redsox set the initial negotiations by offering 4/60.

          11. trs86

How do you KNOW he would not accept it? That’s a 65 million dollar gamble and at this point hell if I was Bay I take it tomorrow. Sox are out and in my opinion now so are the M’s.

          12. Kingman 26

LOL! Nice to have you join in, but good luck with some of these folks…might as well be Mattsblog on here today….

          13. trs86

It’s panic city and some from people I least expected. I know people are itchy and I wanted Halladay and Lackey but I also understand there was nothing Omar could do to make that happen, realistically.

  6. saltygary

Jeez, been home sick all day and haven’t bothered to get on the interweb until now. Looks like I missed a couple things.

Big fear I have now is Omar throwing the kitchen sink at Bay to counteract the PR nightmare that this is causing.

The Doc H doesn’t bother me from a team perspective because they had no shot. There was nothing they could give Toronto that wouldn’t weaken other areas of the team. Him going to the Phils blows but as one poster wrote trading in Lee for Doc isn’t that Major. I have to agree what will it give them maybe 3 extra wins?

Looks like Omar blew the big one on Lackey (if they wanted him anyway). That guy wouldn’t of signed so fast unless that was the only legitimate offer or he really wanted to go to the sox.

    1. Kingman 26

Interweb? Do I detect Corey Taft??

  7. GravediggerHebner

For the sake of argument, let’s assume what I think Oleo is saying is correct.

Jason Bay’s agent says to all 30 teams “OK gentlemen, my client is prepared to play for your club. The first team to offer 6 years, $120 million gets him.”

The Red Sox raise their hand and say “I’ll give you 4 years, $60 million.”

    Bay’s agent says “anyone else?”

The Mets raise their hand and say “I’ll give you 4 years, $65 million.”

    Bay’s agent says “anyone else?”

Crickets and tumbleweeds ensue. What does Bay do, take his glove and go home? Meanwhile, Boston begins “serious talks” with Mike Cameron to play Bay’s old position, meaning not only is the Mets offer the best one Bay has right now, it’s the only one he has right now.

Is he going to play in the independent league this year? They sure won’t pay him $65 million.

  8. stickguy

one odd thing about this Halladay deal.

Unless the Mariners are working out an extension, are they really giving up some premium prospects (from the names being bandied about) for a 1 year rental?
