BREAKING RUMOR: METS ARE CLOSING IN ON BAY…maybe…

According to Mike Lupica, Mets are close with bay and MIGHT BE WILLING TO GO 6 YEARS

-I think i speak for all Met fans when i say…WTF?!

UPDATE

According to MC and NBC sports, the Lupica account was bogus so this may not be true. So in the words of the 90′s generation…..SIKE

If we’re going 6 years, I think we need to have one last talk with Holliday, who IMO is the better of the two. Still, I’m not going to cry if this deal is made. Boo hoo we gave a guy capable of hitting 40 hr’s a couple of years more than we wanted to. Beats having to rely on Pagan. If they are bidding against themselves it’s pretty stupid, but if a team has made a serious 5 or 6 year offer and this is what we must offer, than I’m not going to fret about it.

    1. whataputz

maybe not 40, but he did hit 36 last season, and he’s not exactly a grandpa.

    2. dirtysanchez

Yea but its like you said…the Mets are pretty much bidding against themselves imo. Yea sure SEA, SF, LAA are “involved” but Holiday is out there too and i dont think those markets except for LAA can afford either one imo

    3. Kingman 26

30 HR, 30 2B, 100 RBI, lots of walks, excellent SB %, just turned 31, and unlike Holliday, whose career splits still make him a HUGE question mark, Bay’s career splits are pretty even–home and away, NL and AL, 1st and 2nd halves, hitters’ and pitchers’ parks, etc.

      I like it.

      Wright/Bay/Beltran?

That’s a nice middle of the order.

      1. dirtysanchez

Imagine if they get gado on a 1 year deal and gado can still bring it.

        reyes/castillo/wright/bay/beltran/gado/francoer/Molina(its a done deal imo)

        1. Kingman 26

That is potentially a VERY powerful lineup.

Now if we can just find the time machine for Ollie and Maine and transport them to 2007, we might really have something going….

        2. whataputz

not that it matters, but I don’t understand why people always place beltran fifth and wright 3rd in mock line-ups. Wright has had his best years batting fifth, his power is iffy after lasy year, and beltran batting 3rd gives us 3 fast switch hitters at the top of our line-up..just saying.

          1. dirtysanchez

I agree but thats where they usually put him. I know when i play MLB The Show i always bat beltran 3rd and wright 5th.

          2. dirtysanchez

and traditionally the 3rd spot is reserved for the best hitter and i think the mets view wright as their best hitter.

          3. Kingman 26

Yeah, what Dirty says is general baseball mentality…Wright will have the best BA and OBP.

But I could seriously see Wright, Bay, and Beltran batting anywhere from 2nd to 5th.

You could go a lot of ways, and frankly, with Wright, Beltran, and Bay, ANY sequence of them in the 3-4-5 holes is going to produce a lot.

          4. whataputz

I happen to think Beltran is much more dynamic, has more power, is faster,is a switch hitter and is much more suited for the 3rd spot.

Also, baseball video games have really dropped off, almost to the point where I might just stop buying them.

          5. dirtysanchez

eh…Im sure it has but ive always remained loyal to The Show. Imo its the best simulator out that…sort of like the madden of baseball games.

          6. trs86

I thought last year they moved Wright to behind Beltran.

          7. manicmcreynolds

08 and 09 (at full strength) had:

            3) Wright
            4) Delgado
            5) Beltran

So I think CB would move up to 4 with Bay batting 5, so it would go R-S-R, with Delgado batting 6 if they take a flier on him.

Hey, anyone advocate batting CB 2nd and bumping Castillo to 8th? I really can’t picture our pitchers trying to bunt Bengie to 2nd. Maybe Francoeur.

          8. Kingman 26

I have always loved the idea of Beltran 2nd, and if I am not mistaken he did some time hitting there in KC and his stats in the 2 hole are excellent.

However, as others point out, I suppose Castillo should hit 2nd, as his strengths really are getting on base and seeing pitches….batting 8th, these traits, while of course still positive, might not be as useful. Especially if he is hitting behind Molina! Better be a PERFECT bunt to move him over!

          9. whataputz

why would you want your most powerfull hitter batting 2nd? A guy who hits usually around 270?

          10. Kingman 26

In a lineup with Bay and a normal Wright, Beltran is one of the three most powerful hitters.

And whoever bats 2nd gets a lot more plate appearances than whoever bats 5th.

But ultimately, I probably agree that Castillo has to bat 2nd.

  2. gonzowill

Who are they bidding against? Who is left that needs him? I don’t but that MYSTERY team crap.

    1. dirtysanchez

      the usual suspects…SEA, LAA, SF

    2. Kingman 26

So if we get Bay, we bid against ourselves, and if we lose him, Omar is asleep at the wheel….

      Is this fair?

Do we have any idea how many teams might be in touch with Bay?

Red Sox? Angels? Yankees? Cardinals? Mariners?

      1. dirtysanchez

        Sox..no
        Yankess..no

LAA, STL and SEA…probably but STL is fixated apparently on Holiday

        1. Kingman 26

Yeah, but remember Tex last year? I know Case does….

          1. dirtysanchez

            ??

          2. Kingman 26

How the Yanks came out of nowhere to sign him? Didn’t they?

          3. dirtysanchez

lmaooooo im sorry i thought you ment the texas rangers….im like wha lol

          4. Kingman 26

            HAHA!

I got so used to the abbreviation of “Tex” being used for Teixeira last year!

          5. CaseStreet

the loss of Tex last year was nothing compared to Lackey&Crawford this year.

We’re not doomed either way, I just think we could’ve been really good with a #2 behind Johan and a good defender in LF.

            Hopefully, Omar can do something.

          6. Kingman 26

Bay might not be that good of a fielder, but how many runs might we score with a healthy Jose and Wright/Bay/Beltran 3-4-5 in some order?

And Ben Sheets, if healthy, could be that number 2.

          7. CaseStreet

I know, I just think with three star hitters, we only needed role players, as frenchy puts it.

however, we only have one star pitcher.

          8. gipperpdx

Amen Case…hitting produces grins but pitching produces wins. A number 2 was the priority this offseason..oh well.

          9. Kingman 26

            The season’s 3 1/2 months away Gip…..

  3. prismo

They’re not going 6 guaranteed years. I promise you that.

  4. khmustache

since when did lupica become an insider? i thought his job was to pontificate on sunday mornings with 3 other blowhards….

    1. GravediggerHebner

Lupica didn’t mean the Mets were close to J. Bay, he meant they were close to a bay, Flushing Bay.

      1. Kingman 26

        HA! Probably true…..

      2. khmustache

        ha! line of the day!

    2. Kingman 26

I think Lupica’s job is actually to make the other 3 blowhards look good, which he does quite admirably.

Nice to have you here by the way KH….

      1. khmustache

hehe… thanks king…it’s good to be back, for the sake of my marriage i try to take a couple months off after every season… especially the bad ones.

  5. GravediggerHebner

A couple smaller things that have happened today that caught my eye:

    -Garrett Atkins allegedly has 3 suitors, Mets not speculated to be among them, the wild guess at a contract is 1yr/$3-4 million;

    -with Cameron and Lackey, the Red Sox payroll is just under the luxury tax threshold of $170 million;

    -8 teams are watching Kelvim Escobar throw, the Mets who offered him a minor league contract a few days ago are NOT one of them;

    -the Mets are NOT listed among the teams that watched Aroldis Chapman throw yesterday;

-apparently the Phillies made some trade for a Canadian guy or something.

  6. Kingman 26

Metsblog has a VERY interesting series of excerpts from an interview today with Reyes…a must read.

My favorite though, is how Cerrone made it his own, by saying how Jose hated seeing the Phils in the 2007 World Series…..which, of course, they were not in.

      1. Kingman 26

I am really sorry….I was SO busy today and still trying to keep up and comment.

Believe me, now that I am home I intend to go back and read your post; I ALWAYS read your posts.

Please consider me repentant, apologetic, embarrassed, and VERY un-Khrushchevian.

        1. GravediggerHebner

At this point it’s probably moot. I doubt I have covered something that Mattsblog missed. I can assure you I didn’t “make it my own” though.

  7. steveo

Anyone know if Delgado has resumed b-ball activities? I thought it was supposed to have bee in early Dec. Winter ball.

    1. GravediggerHebner

      This from Bart Hubbuch today:

“GM Omar Minaya said the Mets remain open to bringing back slugger Carlos Delgado on a one-year contract if Delgado proves he is healthy while playing winter ball in Puerto Rico. Minaya plans to fly to Puerto Rico to watch Delgado later this month.”

The Puerto Rican league has started playing, they are about 20 games or so into their season, but I can’t find any evidence of Delgado having played. The mlb.com hitting stats require 2.7 plate appearances per game so I can only say that Delgado, if he is playing, hasn’t made enough appearances to qualify for the stat sheet.

Is Michel Abreu still Met property? He’s batting .365 with 7 HR and 24 RBI in 21 games.

      1. steveo

        Thankyou Sir.

      2. trs86

I think he is indeed still a Met BUT I also think he does that every year.

I want some of what Lupica is smokin’….

  9. CaseStreet

Hudson and lopez still available with the dodgers seemingly out of it after signing Carroll and they have Dewitt.

Wonder if Omar will get castillo out of here and bring in o-dog or lopez. Next years 2b market doesn’t look much better.

  10. trs86

TRDM heartthrob Mike Gonzalez is off the market.

As for Gritty McHudson or Lopez I would take either. Perhaps if the Phillies considered Hudson for 3B he would play a little utility AND lots of 2B until we can dump Castillo?

    1. GravediggerHebner

Re: Gonzalez, I guess that takes away one of Capps’ potential closer jobs, but with Igarashi in house, the Mets may not have RH RP on the “to do” list. With Gonzo gone for LH RP I guess there’s still Beimel, Embree, Eyre, Grabow?, Mahay, Oliver, Shouse and Villone to potentially pair with Feliciano. With that many names, one should come at low cost freeing up money for my next paragraph.

Re: Hudson or Lopez, it’s mostly just in my fantasy life but I still hold out hope that somehow Omar is going to get Phillips and one of the expensive SPs from Cincy. Still doesn’t solve the Castillo aspect though.

      1. CaseStreet

Tell me more about your fantasy life. Are you still a grave digger?

        1. Mr North Jersey

Wow I am so late but I just noticed Case’s avatar.

          1. GravediggerHebner

Two of us are using them Mr. NJ, thanks again for putting them together!

        2. GravediggerHebner

Not at this time of year, ground’s too hard. But the mausoleum business is booming. Death is recession proof.

I’m really overdue to go to bed but I had to note that on the topic of my fantasy life, according to Hot Foot there is a report that the Mets are in “serious talks” with the Reds for “Bronson Arroyo and another player.”

    Woo Hoo!

  12. stickguy

    that is promising.

Hey, Omar did say they had a plan (or at least palyers targeted) and were making progress toward them.

Man,I hope the nervous nellies that were slamming the mets for punting the off season on 12/15 just because Lackey signed elsewhere have to take back their panic!

    1. Mr North Jersey

You would think that wouldn’t you.

It’s not about nervous nellies as you put it it is about put up or shut up.

Somehow if the notion now will be that it was Minaya’s plan to not go after Lackey and he was really after (if the rumor is true) Arroyo the whole time so Mets fans should of never worried, is a fairy tale you can believe.

I am tired of this idea that somehow a person is panicking when Minaya doesn’t go after or signs or trades for a player that many feel would help the team.

When in fact it is disgust at the fact players that many agree can help the team get away time and again for not fitting this conceived picture of a plan the F.O. supposedly has.

Speaking for myself Minaya has used up all his cred and if he can’t field a team in 2010 that can make the post season then you know what? Bye bye Minaya

That “Bye bye Minaya” also applies if his decision to bring Jerry back is why the Mets fail in 2010.

I have been a Minaya supporter for as long as he has been the GM so I don’t say this as someone that never liked him. But Minaya’s decisions this past season or lack thereof irregardless of all the injuries the Mets eventually wound up sustaining put him on the clock the day the 2009 season ended.

He gets no benefit of the doubt any longer. What I expect is for Minaya to prove me wrong to show me he can do whatever is necessary to field the best team possible to contend for a ring in 2010. God! you will never know how much I hope for that.

The reality though at least for me is I just don’t have faith in him. 2009 took a lot out of me as far as trusting Minaya is concerned. I say that as someone that was ok if he wasn’t fired when this season ended because I wanted him to prove he can turn things around.

You have faith in him? Then hey, that is great. Heck I applaud you even your a stand-up guy for doing so but you will find that once 2010 season begins Minaya’s noose will get tighter with every passing game the Mets fall further away from 1st place either in the division or wild-card. Any excuses used to steer responsibility away from him will most likely fall on deaf ears.

I guess I vented for the night (possibly week even lol) and you and everyone else def have a clearer picture on where I stand at least. :-)

Here’s to hoping I am proven wrong for ever doubting Minaya.

      Happy Holidays everyone.
