Chris, err, Jim, err Clint Everts Signs Major League Deal w/Mets

Exhibiting the confidence of someone who's Sure

Exhibiting the confidence of someone who's Sure

According to the twitter feed of his sports agent, Clint Everts has been signed by the Mets to a major league contract.  With Igarashi and now Everts, I guess the bullpen is coming together.

Everts, who turned 25 in August, was the 1st round pick (5th overall) of the Montreal Expos in the June 2002 draft, which was Omar Minaya’s first draft as general manager of Les Expos.  A right handed pitcher (and switch hitter), Everts has not yet pitched in the major leagues.  In the minors he has a career record of 32-39 with an ERA of 3.98.  He has pitched in 191 games, starting 76.

Last season in a combined 44 appearances, all in relief, at Potomac (A), Harrisburg (AA – shout out to Fongy) and Syracuse (AAA) Everts was 8-1 with a 1.65 ERA and a WHIP of 1.250.  He had a K/BB ratio of 2.62 and struck out 10.2 batters per 9 innings.

For those who wonder about my odd title for this post, check out the video below.

    Yeahh championship here we come

But seriously who is this guy

    1. trs86

I think this actually happen during the Winter Meetings. His minor league numbers look pretty good this past year.

      1. GravediggerHebner

It did happen 12/10 but was widely reported then as a minor league contract.

This afternoon the Mets issued a press release to officially announce the signings of Elmer Dessens (minor league contract) and Everts (major league contract).

I didn’t bother noting Elmer in the post because we already knew he was a minor league deal, we reported the details at the time.

But Everts to a major league deal is the surprise that I think is worth reporting.

        1. wannybackstra

I’m sure it’s a $400k major league minimum deal, the difference being that he is guaranteed the $400k whether he is in the majors or minors this season whereas other minor leaguers might only receive the major league minimum on a pro rata basis.

I don’t think this in any way assures him of a major league job out of Spring Training. Frankly, I’d be somewhat surprised if he isn’t sent to AAA for a little more seasoning unless he’s really lights out during the exhibition season.

We all recall that Cory Sullivan was signed to a major league deal which caused quite an uproar on Mattsblog. Sure enough he spent the majority of the season in AAA before coming in an being a nice addition to the team later on.

          1. trs86

True enough. Also have to think that they are committed to fielding a better team in Buffalo.

That pic reminds me of when I was a kid and collecting baseball cards.
“Hey look I got an autographed card”
    “No way, who is it?”
“Clint Everts man this is awesome”
“Who the hell is Clint Everts?”
“Hell if I know but it’s worth something”

    Klapisch silliness:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/klapisch-mets-should-trade-santana-121809

Why would the Mets enter a rebuilding mode while Wright, Reyes, Beltran, K-Rod and Santana are in their prime years and capable alone of keeping the Mets respectable when healthy?

    1. trs86

Because the media knows that idiot Mets fans like us will click on the link and read it then get mad and share it thus generating more hits. Then suckers like me and you fall for it every time. On this one Wanny I think we both fell for it.

      1. metsfan4decades

Based on these comments, I’ll skip that post.

Sure wish I skipped the one by Bob Klapish title ‘Mets should trade Santana’.

After this idiotic statement, he goes on to say it’s time to admit failure with Santana, just like the Pedro/Wagner/Beltran acquisitions were all failures.

He then goes on to say they should dangle Reyes and Wright as well.

        Now I’m mad…
Heading out with the girls tonight for the annual Xmas drinking, er, dinner. Between the impending snowstorm and these idiotic posts, good thing I’m not driving….

        1. trs86

LOL, be safe and have a great time.

    2. GravediggerHebner

You make some very good points about the Everts contract above. Perhaps the Mets even went “this far” with him in a contract because it was reported by Bob Nightengale of USAToday when the Mets signed him that 18 teams pursued him.

As far as Klapisch’s article, I’m not even going to dignify it with a response, in fact as soon as I saw the title I decided I wouldn’t even read it. Somehow once you work for the Post it seems it becomes your life’s goal to push the buttons of Met fans.

      1. wannybackstra

I don’t doubt that lots of teams were looking to catch lightning in a bottle with a kid with a big arm and an impressive pedigree. If guaranteeing him $400k is what got the deal done then I credit Omar for taking a calculated risk on a young player with upside.

As with many young TJ survivors, he’s come back better than he was before. For all we know his frayed forearm/elbow ligaments were what caused him trouble in the first place.

      2. wannybackstra

Perhaps the same could be said of Igarashi, whose walk rates are significantly better post TJ than before (not that his ligaments were causing his wildness but the surgery perhaps changed his approach and has resulted in a better pitcher — this point is probably a more reasonable explanation for Everts, as well).

    3. manicmcreynolds

But nobody’s taking the winter tours of Citi Field! They have to trade their stars!

      What a jerk.

Speaking of jerks, I remember that Jim Everett-Jim Rome thing. What would possess Rome to bait a [successful!] NFL veteran like that? I mean, he was essentially calling Everett a pu**y. Had Everett done something craven? Rome is a clown.

      1. Kingman 26

Rome is a major league clown, but sad as it is, that ridiculous interview helped put that fool on the map.

Which is why he basically begged Everett to slug him.

        1. manicmcreynolds

Figures. No pub is bad pub. Or all pub is good pub.

          Speaking of pubs, it’s Friday . . .

          1. Kingman 26

All pubs are good pubs on a Friday night!

    4. Kingman 26

The Carlos Beltran gamble turned to vapor??

      LOL!

Wanny’s point says it all, really. If everyone is healthy and we add Bay and 1–2 starters? We certainly will be at least competitive.

Klapisch made his bones and had the time of his life when the Mets were horrible in 92-93 when Bonilla almost slugged him; very similar to Rome and Everett. He wrote a popular book and was everywhere back when the Mets were at their lowest point; clearly this is where he wants them to return.

People really have forgotten that we were in or very near first place every day in 2006, 2007, 2008, and the first half of 2009. No titles, and two major non-playoff disappointments, but the slamming of this organization is out of hand and totally ridiculous.

Klapisch loves to slam the Mets, and whatever one’s politics, the Fox News organization’s entire MO is to gather attention with sensationalist nonsense.

  4. trs86

Jose Contreras s is narrowing his options down and preparing to sign. His agent says “there are some interesting opportunities in the bullpen.”

What do you bet that we are one of those BP options? Contreras takes the Redding spot.

    1. Kingman 26

Ugh, I can just see the whining Los Mets posts everywhere if Omar signs him, can’t you??

      1. wannybackstra

Indeed. But he could be the typical Omar reclamation/reformation project, i.e. Easley, Valentin and Tatis.

I think Contreras still has stuff. It wouldn’t surprise me if he could be successful in one to three inning appearances.

        1. Kingman 26

I totally agree, and I would much rather see him than Redding or Figgy.

          1. trs86

I honestly don’t know if he would be better than Redding or not. Redding is young and perhaps was still not healthy to start the year. He did return to much more productive numbers in the 2nd half.

          2. Kingman 26

Maybe…but I think Redding may just be, to use your wonderful term, “craptastic.”

But he did indeed look good at times, and yeah, if we have a solid 1-4, we could do a lot worse for a 5th starter/long man. Like Figgy for example.

          3. trs86

I would not want to depend on Redding for the #5 for sure. But as a long relief guy, maybe.

    2. manicmcreynolds

I feel like we have enough RHPs. As insulation against injuries, I’d root for some young/cheap signings, like this Everts dude.

      1. manicmcreynolds

        I mean in the pen.

        1. wannybackstra

Yes, but Stokes and Green are useless v. lefties and I don’t know if anyone is convinced that Parnell is ready.

The pen is too reliant on OOGies.

  5. steveo

I’m starting to think Mr Bay don’t like us.

    1. trs86

Why because he has not rushed to sign with us in his last big contract?

      1. steveo

I think its time to move on from Mr Bay he won’t and shouldn’t get anymore money than what was offered. The Mets gotta move on from this one he’s holding up to many things

        1. trs86

Holding up what? Are you chugging too much Rum tonight?

  6. steveo

Pitching other catching moves bench players, things are different when you don’t know if your going to spend 16 mil on one player or not or spend that money somewhere else.

    1. Kingman 26

Yeah, I do kind of agree….the amount Omar will spend on pitching will be very different if Bay and Holliday sign elsewhere….

In addition, if we do not get one of them, we will seriously need more offense somewhere else, and more pitching if we are not going to have Bay or Holliday’s offense.

      1. GravediggerHebner

I hear what you guys are saying about pitching, but as far as FA pitchers, if it’s up to me there’s no one left worth spending that money on.

I also am doubting more every second the veracity of that Arroyo rumor from yesterday. The fact that Metsblog or MLBTR haven’t written one word about it, and that the only source has been shot down on it by some of our old Metsblog friends who are now at Amazin’ Avenue makes me not believe it at all.

So the good news (if you think it’s good is up to you) is that I just read that talks between the Dodgers and Reds about Harang are “all but dead.” So I’m hoping I’ll soon start to read rumors from more traditional sources about the Mets talking with Cincy about Harang.

  7. steveo

The short list of notenders won’t be around forever and having to choose over a guy like piniero or a guy like redding because we waited to long or thought we woulnt have the money to sign them would suck.(And I’m using those 2 guys as only examples)

    1. trs86

      Such as who?

      1. trs86

Are you saying we should hurry up and sign Redding?

        1. steveo

Noooooooo. Oh god No but if bay and holiday were gone as of right now who would you be looking for.Well whoever that might be,might be gone by the time we wait for an answer from bay.Look trs I would love to have one of those guys but when it takes a week to take an answer on 65 million bucks and wat for a better offer which won’t come you gotta believe that guy don’t want us.You have take care of your primary needs first and left field is primary need Omar aint gonna wait on this guy much longer and he shouldn’t.

          1. trs86

            Why would he hurry?
Who is left after those two that we are in a hurry to sign? Seriously?

          2. steveo

Why would he hurry? Because if the mets pull there offer Mr Bay will be getting a 4 year 55 million dollar contract. A penny and a day more from the mets would be crazy

          3. trs86

No he would not because he could just sign a 1 year 18 million from someone and hit the market again. Besides you are yet to answer who else would we get?

          4. steveo

Probably Derosa and Garland I know you will crush me for those 2 but that’s why we are here.

          5. Kingman 26

Garland would be welcome, but DeRosa is asking for way too much in years and $$$ I think…

            I bet TRS agrees….

          6. trs86

Not going to crush you at all. But what would keep us from getting Garland while we are waiting on Bay? We have to have pitchers either way. Derosa I have no desire in. I would rather have Vlad for 1 year than Derosa for multiple years.

  8. wannybackstra

From the AP via the Post:

“Everts would get the $400,000 minimum in the majors under Friday’s agreement and $75,000 in the minors”

    1. GravediggerHebner

Don’t injure your elbow patting yourself on the back :-)

  9. GravediggerHebner

Anyone reading I welcome your thoughts on this:

Wanny I know you want fewer OOGIES and I think that’s wise, but that aside for a moment I think the Mets need a second LH pitcher for the bullpen to pair with Pedro Feliciano. That might be Misch I suppose but I was looking at the list of the FAs and wondering if any are worth getting.

I see the Phillies offered Scott Eyre a minor league contract but that he didn’t take it hoping to get a better offer, so there’s him and some other names from the list like

Joe Beimel, Alan Embree, John Grabow (I think he signed?), Eddie Guardado, Ron Mahay, Will Ohman, Darren Oliver, Ron Villone and I may have missed a couple guys. I think Neal Cotts was non-tendered.

Anybody you guys think is worth bringing in?

    1. Kingman 26

To me Darren Oliver jumpos out of that list. I would love to have him back.

      1. Kingman 26

JUMPS, not jumpos…damn, watching the Nets get obliterated again has me loopy. 94–60 TOR after 3!!

The Nets losing percentage will be .926 after tonight—is that something or what??

        1. GravediggerHebner

I hear you, I turned off the Knick game when they started by falling behind 24-8.

      2. trs86

My thing with Oliver is that he is older and I am not sure he can give us much over cheaper options. Oliver is the better pitcher by far but how much will he cost? Lyon got 15 million, Gonzalez 12 so I would expect Oliver to get 2/7?

        1. Kingman 26

I would say 2/5 or 2/6 would be worth it…he was pretty good the last two years, and is not really a lefty specialist; he was better against righties last year.

          1. trs86

I just have a bad feeling for some reason. LOL.

  10. trs86

Hey guys what do we think about signing Tejada for 1B?

    1. Kingman 26

Not bad, but I don’t think he has ever played a game at first, has he?

      1. trs86

Nope but they think he may have to play 3B this year and he has not done that either in the majors.

    2. trs86

Just thinking that if he would do it he could also be there for SS and 3B.

      1. fongy2

If we did something like that,I’d prefer
        Adrian Beltre.

        1. trs86

I think Beltre will cost more because of his defense and the fact teams are looking for 3B. That’s why teams are turning Polanco back to 3B and trying to get Hudson to switch.

      2. GravediggerHebner

As long as he came at a reasonable price (whatever that may be) I can’t think of a strong argument against it. It’s not like bringing in a guy who’s never played 1B would offend Murphy, and as a (former?) SS he should be able to scoop a ball in the dirt.

I worry a bit about the fact that his hitting numbers are much higher at Minute Maid, that was especially pronounced last year and might be giving us a false impression about him as a hitter overall.

        1. njstuckintx

It could be that he could come at a reasonable price, given the market, but placing one’s hope on a 14 HR hitter in a batters park, the fact he’s never played anything other then SS and he is not going to accept a platoon position, let us stay away from this. Houston could have used him at 3B (which I would think is an easier switch from SS than 1B would be) but stayed away. While an out of the box thought, I think this is not worth entertaining.

          1. trs86

I am not sure we are putting any hope on him if the price is right.

      3. njstuckintx

No thank you. Let’s stay younger and cheaper, eh?

  11. fongy2

Can’t stay long but just wanted to chime in on Everts since I know a
    little something about him.
Saw him a few times as a closer down here and the kid does indeed have
    quasi-electric stuff. No sure thing,
    mind you but…don’t faint,kudos to
Omar on this! This is a kid who blew
out his arm 4or5 yrs ago, missed much
of two yrs then stuggled getting back
his fastball which last season returned to 93/94MPH. Major league
curve which is his swing and miss pitch is real, real nasty. This could turn out very well for us and frankly
if given a fair chance,I could see him making the team and being a solid
mid-gm RP. Definate presence on the
mound which if you see enough Minor
league ball really very often tells
you the kid is good or in this kid’s case, has been real good until arm trouble. Like I said, Omar may have a gem here. Worst case is he’s Buffalo’s closer and may help later
during the season. It may well also
indicate Parnell could be a goner in
a multi-player deal. In any event just wanted to let who guys know, this
isn’t Phil Humber who once had nasty stuff, messed up his arm and never recovered. This kids stuff looked like it has come back and throwing only two pitches(fastball&curve)may
    have finally found his niche.

    If I can’t get back because we’re
    dog-sitting my neighbors PITA pug,
have a good night AND as always….
    Let’s Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!

    1. Kingman 26

Thanks for the scounting report Fong!

I am just about out for the night too—watch for my holiday opinion piece this weekend buddy and have a good one!

      1. fongy2

Will do! Peace and safety in your travels

        1. Kingman 26

          Same to you Fong.

  12. trs86

I am reading comments on Metsblog and I should be drunk. Why should we suddenly believe that Bay does not want to be here because he is taking his time? Does Holliday not want be in St. Louis?

    1. GravediggerHebner

Oh the myopia! And why do you read these comments? A wise senior co-worker of mine many years ago said these wise words to me. “Why beat your head against a wall? The wall doesn’t move and your head gets bloody.”

I think you touched on this somewhere earlier, he’s more likely waiting because as a 30yo this will be his last big contract and he wants to squeeze as much as he can out of it.

On that note, my brilliant idea is offer him a 1 year deal and say “come here, have a great year then go back on the market next year and get your last long big money deal. If you can’t get the deal you want when Matt Holliday is your only competition, maybe you can next year when Carl Crawford, Adam Dunn and Jayson Werth are available. Or just sign this 4/$65 already you schmuck.”

      1. Kingman 26

“Or just sign this 4/$65 already you schmuck”

        Line of the day!!

I try hard to avoid Metsblog comments…it is truly the wilderness of nonsense over there…but seriously, try Mets.com or the Ledger sometimes…they really make Metsblog look like a Mensa meeting.

      2. steveo

Thankyou Grave these are dollars not pesos

      3. trs86

        Agreed.

    2. njstuckintx

It must be the day and age of instant information that takes these week long negotiations and drives people crazy.

      1. trs86

No doubt, in the old days we usually did not know they had even offered until the player signed.

        1. njstuckintx

Can you imagine the volume of bloggage occurring when Straw went with the Dodgers or even when Mex was brought in from the Cards? The number of people jumping from bridges or naming their children Keith would be phenomenal.

          1. trs86

Imagine allowing Knight to leave after winning the WS MVP.

          2. njstuckintx

That would have caused an riot. Then again, 2 years after that, how many people would have claimed that they were totally on board with that move and obviously knew Knight was going to drop off like he did.

That whole Hindsight being mad dog 20/20 is fun. :)

          3. trs86

That is the blog world. We actually feel as educated as the guys in charge and think things are much easier than they most likely are.

Sign so and so and then trade so and so. I am guilt of it myself but some of them just take it for granted.

          4. Kingman 26

HAHA! I can imagine after game 2 of the WS at Shea, Metsblog would have been overwhelmed with people screaming about the changes that would have to be made in 87 to get past the Red Sox!!

          5. njstuckintx

I know. just thinking of the player moves would be one thing, but imagine the game calling from bloggers. Heck, Knight didn’t even play in game 2. The magnifying glasses placed on today’s game might have driven player back in the day to Coke. Oh wait…

And on a side note, all this nostalgia made me look back at the series from 86. Glen Close, Natalie Cole, Billy Joel, Smokey Robinson, Paul Simon. quite the haul for the star spangled banner.

  13. trs86

Still gouging my eyes with Metsblog:
“when bay is called out looking at strike 3 in the bottom of the 9th down by one with
men at the corners, remember how he hard he worked to get his millions,
and how reluctant he was (is) to be a met.”

    1. Kingman 26

LOL!! What the hell is that even supposed to mean?? Is it some sort of 2006 Beltran/Wainwright reference??

    2. GravediggerHebner

I am with Kingman: what the hell does that even mean?

Whoever wrote that (originally) is delusional and full of self-loathing and needs to seek professional help.

I think everyone here has disagreed with everyone else here at one point or another, and perhaps even been unsure of where the other party was coming from, but no one here is insane. That person is insane. Seriously. Get some meds bro.

      1. trs86

Grave you gotta read that thread buddy. LOL.
        http://www.metsblog.com/2009/12/18/buzz-on-no-buzz-from-bay/#comments

        1. GravediggerHebner

Wow. I haven’t been there in a while, he’s made his site a lot uglier.

A very small percentage of the posts in there were reasonable, people named after Mets (Barry Lyons, Jerry Koosman) stood out as beacons of sanity.

          They’re running up hill though.

The last 2 posts there when I got there were funny. From the same guy:

post 1 “Maybe the Mets did here from him but didn’t tell Matt.”

          post 2 “hear.”

At least he corrected his own spelling, that’s more than Matt would do.

          1. trs86

How could they not tell Matt?

Seriously though. Do you think that the Mets did not speak with Bay’s agent at all today?

          2. GravediggerHebner

I don’t know what to think, I’m not sure about how these negotiations work.

I am reminded of an episode of Family Guy in which Brian the dog hits it off with a woman who suddenly stops returning his phone calls.

He keeps calling her and leaving messages until her answering machine is full and he can’t leave anymore, so he buys an answering machine, leaves a message on it for her and sends it to her in the mail.

I hope the Mets are not acting as desperately as Brian the dog.

          3. Kingman 26

How about the answering machine scene in Swingers?

“Jason! Did you just get in or were you listening the whole time?”

            “Omar, never call me again.”

          4. GravediggerHebner

It’s been too long since I’ve seen that, I really need to watch it again.

Memory too fuzzy right now, all I can recall is “you’re money and you don’t even know it.”

Well, that is a fine start.

Definitely worth watching again…among the highlights will be seeing how incredibly thin Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau are compared to today….and how many of those then-unknowns have made solid careers.

Hey leave them alone after all they had to audition to write there

Orange you glad we don’t have auditions? Banana.

But seriously, are you allowed to post there? The only person who posts here that I know is allowed to over there is Stickguy.

I can top this easily–from the Mets.com comment section:

“maybe the Maine/Castillo trade can = Zack Grienke”

Maybe they might also throw in George Breet circa 1980?

          1. Kingman 26

George Breet was really good, I swear….

I must retire I’ll follow up on these scintillating conversations in the morning.

If anyone is bored, that “Annie Hall” thing in the sportspyder is a good read.

I, for one, am glad to read someone besides me who thinks Klapisch is just nuts.
Then again, I’m kicking myself for even giving that tool the time of day to comment not once, but twice on that post of his.

      Trade Santana…..Bah.
Beltran acquisition a failure….double Bah. He must be related to Steve Phillips.
