Hypothetically speaking… What is your plan IF Bay decides he doesn’t want to be a Met and Holliday is out of the Mets price range? Which way do you turn? My plan Uggla(trade)/DeRosa (2 years 12 million…7 this year, 5 next year)/Byrd 1 year 7 million (2nd year vested option based on starts)/Barajas 1 year 2 million then sign Piniero and Dotel and “Juan Pierre” Luis Castillo to any team who will do it.
Obviously it’s not my “ideal” plan but I’m working with the idea that for some reason Bay turns us down and Holliday costs too much and thus we go short-term on a bunch of “solid”. The lineup would be a LOT better than last year with only Barajas truly “bad” but still a plus defensive player with pop. Byrd isn’t a terrible player, you still have Pagan, Uggla probably comes close to Bay’s production (from 2b no less) and DeRosa can be moved wherever to accommodate adding better players.

LOVE the idea of Uggla, but other than that, no so much.
Try very hard to trade for Lowe. Sign Sheets. Sign Marquis or Garland.
Be loaded with reliability AND talent.
If everyone is healthy:
Johan/Sheets/Lowe/Pelf/Garland.
If Sheets craps out, bring in Ollie.
Maine goes to the pen or in a trade, and if everyone is healthy, Ollie can be the second lefty out of the pen.
Without Bay or Holliday we will need very good and reliable starting pitching.
I say it is time to give Bay a 48 hour deadline to sign, or he can risk becoming the 2009 version of Hudson/Abreu.

I just see NO way we can get Lowe. The Braves would eat no cash to send him to us and we have no hitter in return. I know they have meshed for secondary trades but to me they know we need a starter and would have no desire to bail us out.

None of the above sound very appealing to me. Plus, I’m not so sure I’d waste the money signing guys
who would make little to no impact.
As I posted in the last thread, there
will be guys who become available during the season and frankly I’d
prefer to keep the cash in hand while
allowing some of the younger guys
have a chance to show what they are.

Even better!
But I think we should take the gamble on Sheets, especially if we don’t get Bay or Holliday.
A healthy Sheets is better than Lackey anyway.

uggla works for me.
Heck, they are getting less than stellar D anyway out of Luis, might as well get some hitting to make up for it!

I think the problem is still that the Marlins and Braves hope to be competitive this year in the NL East. Thus I don’t see them working out a trade with us for either Uggla or Lowe. Perhaps if we got a 3rd team involved.

yeah, I’d go Sheets and try for Lowe (not likely)
maybe Winn can be had for cheap. I’d still try for LaRoche.

Winn could be had for league minimum after that season last year. He would be ok if you decided that Pagan was the starter.

Thats a disaster of a plan
Case. And I mean no disrespect. Winn is about done,Laroche is no great improvement over Murphy and
again, we don’t even know if Sheets can pitch.
Long weekend pal???

I find it hard to say at this point that LaRoche is no great improvement over Murphy. All we have to go by on Murphy is what his stats say he is. If that is what he is then LaRoche is a great improvement.

I have no idea about Winn other than he’s been a solid player for many years.
LaRoche is an improvement, not great, but it’s an improvement.
Obviously if Sheets can’t pitch, then there’s no point in discussing him. If he can, then he’d be a guy to target.

Winn WAS a solid player for many years. Check his stat line last year.

Winn is in good enough shape to throw 15 rounds with the top light heavies in the world.
What’s more reliable, the previous 10 years of consistency, or last year, a season in which he was asked to do more than he’s supposed (300 at bats in the 3rd and 5th spots)?

At this point, under the assumption Bay isn’t coming, I’m not inclined to spend much of anything.
Uggla is a DH, DeRosa wants way more money than that, Byrd is useless in this current rotation. Barajas cheap and short is fine, doesn’t hurt.
Ultimately I’m largely agreeing with Fongy above, no one left on the FA market is going to make enough of a difference to give any real money too. Suck it up and look for mid-season dumps. Don’t waste money.

And if you were talking Marlon, not Paul Byrd, then eh OK but only if dirt cheap, he just doesn’t help enough to give any real money to.

Bay or Holliday will be a Met. Omar always gets the big kahuna…

Not every year. Before ’05 he got Beltran and Pedro, before ’06 he got Wagner, before ’08 he got Santana and before ’09 KRod, but before ’07 his big FA pickups were El Duque and Moises Alou, so while he “almost” always gets a big kahuna, the precedent is also there for him not doing so.
We could be re-living the ’07 off-season, if so I guess the equivalent would be a 1 year deal for Vlad Guerrero and 2 years for Jose Contreras.
