Bay to wear Red Socks for Xmas?

According to MLBTR a team source for Boston tells Rob Bradford of WEEI that a possibility for another contract offer for Bay is being considered.  Red Sox Nation saying you know what you can do if you don’t like it.

Maybe this brings Holliday closer to NY or not.

Mets not doing any last-minute shopping »

    By Adam Rubin

In case you were holding out hope, it doesn’t look like GM Omar Minaya will be doing any last-minute shopping that would put something under the Christmas tree for Mets’ fans.

A club official said today that negotiations with free agents Jason Bay and Bengie Molina remain on hold, as they have been essentially since the Mets made offers two weeks ago, and there is no expectation anything will change until after Christmas.

In fact, the official said the Mets haven’t even heard from Bay’s agent, Joe Urbon, in the last couple of days.

The Mets are right to be patient here and not bid against themselves, if indeed there is no other team with serious interest in Bay. But they could wind up getting burned by their strategy as well, giving other teams more time to jump in and sign him.

Meanwhile, the R.A. Dickey signing became official today. The Mets signed the 35-year old knuckleballer to a minor-league contract. Dickey made one start and 34 relief appearances for the Twins last season, going 1-1 with a 4.62 ERA in 64 1/3 innings.

Finally, Carlos Delgado’s return to baseball, via the Puerto Rican winter league, has been delayed, apparently because of issues related to the hip surgery he had last summer. He may not play for a few more weeks, which could affect any chance he has of being re-signed by the Mets.

Minaya said last week the club planned to have scouts at his games this winter to evaluate his play.

Merry X-mas Met fans .WOW this team really can’t chew gum and walk at the same time

  3. fongy2

I’m wondering what this does to Ellsbury’s future if the Sox do
re-sign Bay? Didn’t Cameron get TWO
    yrs in his deal?

    1. GravediggerHebner

He probably gets included in the package that goes to SD for AGonz.

    2. metfreak

Maybe they would trade him for another pitcher or a package for a 1st basemen from SD

      1. fongy2

        Great! Thank you both!
        And Bah Humbug to ya!

        1. Mr North Jersey

          lol

  4. GravediggerHebner

    I love that picture!

I sort of hope Bay does go back to Boston. Then the Mets will basically have three choices. Make a huge dollar, long years offer to Holliday in hopes of bringing him aboard, or spend next to nothing (comparatively) on a short term LF stop-gap, or just don’t bother signing anyone at all and going with in house options with Pagan as the major player.

If they go all in with Holliday and get him, they’ve got very little money for anything else so the team remains flawed and Omar loses his job.

If they go short term stop gap they have money left to throw at other holes, but not enough to do anything dramatic and the team remains flawed and Omar loses his job.

If they sign no one, the team remains flawed and Omar loses his job.

    Notice a trend?

It seems as though keeping Omar around for 2010 is the equivalent (ironically given last year’s injuries) of keeping someone on life support with the knowledge that as soon as you unplug it, they die.

    1. Mr North Jersey

LoL, sounds more like a PLAN then a trend to me Grave. :-)

      1. GravediggerHebner

        “I have a plan, I like my plan, it’s a good plan.”

    2. stickguy

given how the off seaosn has progressed (although, of course, there is still time for a flurry of moves), I am more inclined to believe that the team fully well expected to follow a plan of “hole plugging while hoping the stars get healthy and have a rebound”. That is, no huge LT additions (just ST guys), unless a bay/lackey/holliday fell to them at a bargain price (not seeming that will happen).

So, it made perfect snese to keep Omar, for 2 reason. 1) a new guy would want to try and put his stamp on the team (wheel and deal), and 2) they have the fall guy all lined up for the firing squad.

So, this is what Omar’s extension was for. He really got a 1 year/3 mill deal to protect the farm, so that the new regime coming in after 2010 would have more to work with.

same logic I guess applies to bringing back Jerry. Gonna let the new guy pick his maanger for next year.

The real kicker will be if the patch job team pulls a 2006 and makes the playoffs! Then what do you do?

      1. Mr North Jersey

You open the champagne bottle because according to Willie it should taste really good by now.

        1. fongy2

          more like vinegar!

      2. GravediggerHebner

Your last sentence Stick is why I look at it as a “lose/lose” proposition.

I think the offense is fine as is (assuming health which of course is difficult).

I think the defense could use improvement at 2B and LF (over Castillo and say Sheffield) and they still can improve LF, but I just don’t see the team shedding Castillo.

I think the SP staff is pretty close to woeful after Santana, and as negative and bummed as I’ve been about it the last week or so, this is the area of the team that IMO the 2010 season rides on.

Somehow, someway, the SP staff has to come through in a big way, either by those who are here now growing/exceeding expectations/staying healthy in some combination, or by someone new brought in who at first doesn’t seem like much of an improvement somehow exceeding expectations/staying healthy.

It’s not impossible by any stretch. It’s just the kind of thing that we won’t know the definitive answer to until October (if that answer is affirmative, if it’s negative oh we’ll know well before that).

        1. stickguy

Yeah, the sp was certainly underwhelming last year.

But, look at the bright side. THere is a lot of inherent talent there, and the possiblity really exists that it is much, much better in 2010.

          1. Mr North Jersey

Maybe we should of invested in upgrading our pitching coach (Dave Duncan where are you?) in hopes he could enhance our current staff?

We would of saved millions and could of told fans we don’t need no stinkin pitchers we got Duncan.

    3. fongy2

      Agree on the picture.
      Funny!…Yet very disturbing!

  5. stickguy

Well, I posted this on the last thread, but I guess it belongs here!

Saw that item about Bay. I am actually all for that. He still scares me (thinking of him patrolling LF for the next 4 years).

At least if they sign him, it pretty much limits them to 2 options: 1) pay up for Holliday, or 2) spread the wealth on a lot of shorter term deals to improve in as many places as possible.

Both I think are better than overpaying Bay and not doing much else.

Oh, I guess there is still a 3) go hog wild on trades, but somehow I get the feeling that the cream of the farm isn’t going anywhere (probably a real good idea at this point).

maybe a nice salary dump trade to at least get something going? Either CInci. SP would be good at thsi point

    1. metfreak

I would rather have Holiday but that’s not happening I would not mind Bay at all everybody keeps bring up next year but how do we know the Mets will be big players next year

      1. njstuckintx

I dunno. I feel if the Mets lose out on Bay as well to Lackey, Cameron, etc., and Omar sticks to signing at least one big name to keep the peeps coming to the stadium, I can see him swooping in (and overpaying) to sign Holliday.

I think I just had an out of body experience and TRS took over for a minute.

        But I still think that!

        1. Mr North Jersey

Well it is Xmas time and there is a precedent for being visited by 3 ghosts.

So the question is if TRS was the 1st one which 2 will be next?

          1. njstuckintx

If I had to guess, ghosts 2 and 3 would be wanny and fongy swooping in to tell TRS he’s crazy and where he can put his optimism and his ability to end most of his posts with a question to spurn on conversation. :P

          2. Mr North Jersey

            :-) LoL :-)

  6. jaydh

Like most, I am not into Bay at the current offer. But to put pressure on Bay, make an offer to Holliday. Or, just go after the best of the pitchers that are left such as Sheets and Valverde. Bay and Molina are basically putting our entire offseason on hold while other FAs are signing. It has to come to the point where we can’t wait any longer and must move on.

    1. fongy2

      Fear not!
I’m sure Omar has a plan!

      1. Mr North Jersey

I can see the shirts at Citi Fields next year if things don’t change,

  7. fongy2

Maybe Its just the time of year or
still being a newlywed (again) or
    I don’t know what…BUT for the most
part, I’ve been pretty optimistic lately about all things in life…
Even The NY Mets 2010 season!
This, while waiting, hoping, praying for the big signing or blockbuster trade. But I,m really starting to feel like the disapointed kid who didn’t get what he wanted, hoped for and expected for Christmas!

At this point, Omar should just come right out and hold a press conference
advising all die-hards “You’ll all be
getting a lump of coal this Christmas
,make the best of it”…”See ya in
    Spring Training”.

    1. Mr North Jersey

“you’ll shoot your eye out kid”

Omar’s reply to Mets fans for not making certain moves.

      1. fongy2

        Indeed!

    2. njstuckintx

I think Omar’s gift to all of us will be a t-shirt available at all Met’s concession stands…

“2010 Mets, we have payroll flexibility!”
      - Omar

  8. GravediggerHebner

I guess Fongy you’re hinting that the Mets should get Ellsbury if Bay back to Boston happens. Somehow I don’t see that happening.

But, they may actually be interested in moving some salary as Bay would put them over the luxury tax threshold. So with that in mind:

    JD Drew – $14 mil 2010, $14 mil 2011
    Ortiz – $13 mil 2010
    Lowell – $12.5 mil 2010
    Matsuzaka – $8.3 mil 2010, $10.3 mil 2011 & 2012

    Just throwing it out there.

    1. fongy2

Well the guy they wanna move as we know is Lowell.
      I wouldn’t doubt Drew but
I can’t see them getting much of anything for him,he’s so over paid. I’d want no part of him, the guy’s a dog.
      I couldn’t buy them moving Big Papi,or Dice-K.
      Too much invested in Dice-K
and Papi’s to important to that clubhouse and town.

      1. GravediggerHebner

I think I agree with everything you say, and would add that because of Drew’s salary the Mets could get him without giving up much leaving Boston with Bay/Ellsbury/Cameron OF. But that eliminates their possibly sending Ellsbury to SD for AGonz if that opportunity arises.

If Omar acquired a high-salaried white guy lots of fans heads would explode, it might be worth it just to see that.

        1. jaydh

i want no part of Drew.

          1. fongy2

            Again,I agree.
            Earlier,I called him a dog.
            Sorry ’bout that!
as a dog lover and owner,
            its an
            insult to dogs everywhere.

          2. Kingman 26

As Tommy LaSorda once said when Darryl was a Dodger and still in his bad days and someone called Darryl a dog:

“Wrong! A dog is loyal and runs hard after balls!”

    2. njstuckintx

Lowell for 1B? I don’t see it happening, but just throwing out the thoughts.
Would he be trade-able before proving his health?

with these Metsies in the next
few days. Only 6or7 weeks to Pitchers

To quote MacArthur: “There is no subsitute for Victory” AND “We are not retreating-we are advancing in another direction”.

    Let’s Go Mets!

    1. Mr North Jersey

MacArthur now than man had a plan.

    2. Kingman 26

Right back at you my friend–I hope you spend the next week and a half smiling and enjoying your wife and family!

  11. metsfan4decades

My contribution to this off season so far is just, ‘Bah, Humbug’…..

It’s looking more and more like Omar will just attempt to plug some holes with ‘fill ins’ temporarily and hold on for mid season trades or even the 2010 off season and better crop of FAs.

And to all my fellow Met fans taking a few days off from this mindless speculation…Hope you all have a wonderful holiday. Enjoy family and friends.

I’ll be sticking around waiting for that last minute present from Omar under the tree….
