In a rare positive Mets outlook from the mind of Ken Davidoff, he details why Omar’s done everything right so far this offseason, but the fans just don’t see it. Davidoff brings up some significant early signings from Omar’s past years with the Mets – Pedro, Ollie, Castillo, and the Putz trade…and how none of them worked out as intended. And yet the fans have still clamored for quick signings this offseason. Ken praises the patience of Omar, which could end up benefitting the Mets in the end. They may end up getting Bay for less than they would have otherwise, and if not, they may end up with extra money to spend on the better free agent class of 2010.
That’s easy for Ken to say…but I can only bank on “they’ll be better next year” so many times.

I do agree with Ken on people’s overreactions to other teams signing free agents. (Okay, he never exactly said it, but it’s implied) Another popular Mets blog for some reason posts every free agent signing, even if it has nothing to do with the Mets. This prompts hoards of bitter Mets fans to explain “Omar’s still sitting on his arse! Why hasn’t he signed anyone!” What, is Omar supposed to sign every free agent? There are 30 teams in a league – there are going to be a lot of free agents signed by 29 teams that aren’t named “The Mets.”

I still say at the core when you get right down to it. It’s about if fans have faith that Omar really has a plan or not and is he executing everything according to plan.
I keep reading about LF, LF, LF and I am concerned as to why are not more people concerned about the Starting Pitching?
A signing of Bay or Holliday is pointless if the more serious need of an upgrade of a #2 Starter to go behind a Santana isn’t addressed.
My jaw dropped when we didn’t get Lackey after that all I could best hope for is that somehow there is a trade in the works on the backburner that will address this still pending need. A need that for me at least weighs far greater than a LF Position.

That’d work too. That’s almost too perfect, as it’s 2 birds with one stone. If that domino could fall and Holliday/Bay acutally come to fruition, I think the offseason could actually be classified as a success.
Meche, Harang, Arroyo, Duke, C. Young (maybe?)… Am I missing anyone else?

That’s probably the toughest part in this age of the tweets and the blogs and the instant information. If someone is not making waves and signing people, they must obviously not be doing anything. obviously.
I guess we start reading into it with the “possibilities vs. the probabilities”. It is still possible we could be looking at Holliday in LF next year. We all, in our Mets Mentalities figure that while possible, it most likely isn’t probable.
On the Bright side, at least we aren’t Cubs fans, right?

To your point, I’ve been to Wrigley Field twice and would not mind at all being a Cubs fan if it means that 15-20 days a year I leave work at lunch and go watch a Cubs game from a rooftop bar. This would also require me to move to Chicago, but I digress…

One SECOND the media reports how Omar is doing nothing and its bad then the next SECOND they report that Omar is doing nothing and it could be a good thing…Can these stupid reporters make up there minds already

As Metfreak says above, I wouldn’t put too much stock into what most of these reporters say about anything. Truth of the mater is that many of them are no more qualified as baseball people than the rest of us. What they do have is access.
That said, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit disapointed int he way that things have gone this offseason thus far. I’ve been a Mets fan since 1985 when I was 7 years old, and in all the years since then, I’ve never had such a difficult time getting over a season as I did last year. It’s ben really hard for me to re-charge the engines so to speak. I know come ST I’ll be back, but right now I’m still in pain over the way things went last year.
I’ve also never been one of these “fans”, and I use the term loosely, who demand that something must be doen simply for the sake of doing something. However, there is obviously something wrong with this team right now. If we accept that as a fact, and I don’t think you can argue it, then it would follow that something would need to be done to improve the team so that we do not have a repeat from last year.
Yes, of course we will hopefully be getting back a healthy Jose and Beltran. Yes, hopefully DW returns to form. Still, this team is full of holes. We still need a power bat in LF and we still need a starting pitcher. At this point I’m still willing to give Omar the benefit of the doubt as it is his behind on the line, but I really hope that they aren’t misreading the market.
At the end of the day, this team has a Perception Problem (PP). Nothing new for the Mets really, but I think that the particular PP is worse than in the past. Why? Well the Yankees have just won the WS and they have improved considerably. The Phillies acquired the best pitcher in baseball. We have signed 7 back up cathcers, a minor league first baseman, and a 35 year old knuckleball pitcher. These are tough pills to swallow for Mets fans.
Like most of you, I’ve spent the better part of my adult life defending this organization and this team with little return on my investment. That’s fine. This si sports, not life and death. But at some point, someone needs to take control of this orginization and finally get it going in the right direction. Start making wise decisions so that we can have some prolonged success rather than the 2-3 year stretches we get once every 12 years.
