The Dream Is Over – Matt Holliday Signs With The Cardinals

Well so goes the dream of having Carlos Beltran , Jason Bay and Matt Holliday playing in the same out field

SI.com’s Jon Heyman has reported that the Cardinals and Holliday have agreed to a seven-year, $120MM contract. Heyman says the deal includes a full no-trade clause. Holliday falls short of the $18MM average salary he reportedly sought, but this contract is a huge win for Boras given the lack of competition.

Thanks to MLBTR.com for the tip

I’m sure Beltran and his knees both let out a collective “whewwww”.

Not bad, and just $1m more per year than bay. At least we didn’t have to wait an extra week to wait for holliday to sign. Man Omar is the worst GM in baseball.

I don’t think we were ever getting Holliday for that price. We did the Cardinals a favor when we signed Bay. From everything I’ve been reading, that only left the Cardinals as serious suitors for Holliday and kept the price down a bit for them.

You know if we tried to sign him instead of Bay it would have been for more $$. We would have been dealing with the king of agents with that. And it would have been going back and forth forever so we could have potentially lost out on both Bay and Holliday…..

And so glad to see this site back up and running. I commented on the RJ post that a day w/o TRDMB is just as bad as a day w/o my caffeine…..

Stephen Colbert’s interview with the editor of RedState.com blew my sarcasm detector out so I can’t tell if you’re serious or not.

Are you saying that you would rather have Matt Holliday for 7/$120 than Bay for 5/$80?

yes and no. the deal is similar in annual salary to bay, except twice the year. the only problem i see is that holliday will be 38 at the end of the contract while bay will be 35. those last two years may hurt the cards, especially when pujols will be the same age.

I am hoping that is sarcasm because in my opinion the Bay deal favored the Mets big time. 63 million for the 4 years back loaded with a 3 million buy out? To me that is the mark of a good GM. He waited for what he wanted and got it on his terms.

Yes it is, though I do question the argument about havng to wait too long for holliday. That didn’t happen. Doesn’t matter, I’m excited about bay being a Met.

But who knows how long Holliday would have taken if Bay was still on the market. Imagine this scenario for Holliday. Bay signs with the Mets and Cards say we are moving on by signing Hudson and Dye. Who the hell is signing Holliday then?

A win for the Mets too. I like Holliday better than Bay but not for twice the total price or forever.

7 years is like a lifetime it will be interesting to see if there is or is not an out clause after 5 years in the coming days.

I always said I preferred Holliday over Bay but even I know that Minaya would not sign him if it required 7 years so I can’t kill Minaya for not signing Holliday.
