But can he hit?
Today’s installment of loosely Mets related news:
- Yesterday we learned what we already knew about Mark McGwire. Today we learned what we already knew about the Florida Marlins: they’re cheap. They’ve been publicly called out by Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association for not putting their piece of the revenue sharing pie back into their product. As Billy Wagner might say, f’in shocker.
- Old friend Ramon “Darth Catcher” Castro has re-signed with the Chicago White Sox, giving him another opportunity to catch a perfect game. Yesterday just as In Other News… was going to press, another old friend found work as well when Ryan Church agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Pirates. I couldn’t help but wonder if Church’s Met career might’ve worked out differently if only he’d had Ramon Castro’s head.
- The Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers are the two teams named most recently in pursuit of Joel Pineiro. Some snappy commenters at Sons of Steve Garvey don’t seem to like the Mets much, but then again why would I expect the illegitimate offspring of the man formerly known as Mr. Clean to like the Mets?

What happens to Santos when Molina signs? They can’t possible be thinking about carrying 3 catchers…
Does Santos have options still – can we send him down to triple A?
Or do you think Santos is destined as trade bate in some package deal – preferably for a pitcher?

Santos can be sent to AAA at will.

The head gangsta pulled a 718 on Church.
Interesting that Church will be competing with L-Millz for playing time.

Haha! They just need someone like Alex Escobar or Jeff Duncan for LF for the perfect ex-Met OF.

Those of you who were around at Metsblog may remember the screen name “gbaked” well he went to a Red Sox blog and asked for Red Sox fans opinions on Jason Bay’s defense and posted both a link to the whole thing as well as some “highlights.” You can read gbaked’s post at this link:

Also, because I am such a noteworthy nattering nabob of negativity I thought I’d share this review of Bengie Molina from the SF Giants blog “McCoveyChronicles.com:”
“His defense is scary, and his viability as a middle-of-the-order hitter is laughable.”

Nice post I am of the opinion that Bay can be counted on consistently catching whatever he gets to with some of his best plays in 2010 coming from not his physical but rather his mental skills playing heads up baseball.
At least that is what I hope.

I think “consistently catching whatever he gets to” is a very nice way of putting it, I like your style.
Reminds me of that old television commercial in which they feed a man who works in a deli a sandwich, and the deli man takes a bite, then another bite and the announcer says “from a deli man, that’s a rave.”

And this note related to Orlando Hudson from the Nats mlb.com site:
“It is believed Hudson is asking for $9 million for 2010, which is too much for the Nationals. And don’t look for them to offer Hudson a two-year deal either. In fact, the source believes the Giants set the market for infielders like Hudson when they re-signed Juan Uribe to a one-year, $3.25 million contract on Jan. 5.”
