Molina-Mets Union Inches Closer To Reality

Bengie trots home

Bengie trots home

According to Fox Sports Latest Buzz MLB column, free agent catcher Bengie Molina:

  • “has lowered his asking price, multiple sources said Tuesday, raising the likelihood of a long-expected union with the New York Mets.  Molina had been asking for a three-year contract, but one source believes he is now willing to sign for two years.”

Someone finally mentioned to Bengie that the stands are a mere 45 feet behind home plate at Citi Field and that any wild pitches or passed balls won’t require much running to retrieve.

How much longer do we have to wait until he demands a 1 year deal?

curses. you beat me to it.

If it’s taken this long to go from 3 down to 2, how much longer to go from 2 to 1+1?

Omar, the plan following turlte! Slow and steady wins the race. Slow and steady.

At least Thole would have a good mentor.

plus, we know what happens when the Mets get an All-Star behind the plate.

      October baseball, here we come!

I know this has nothing to do with the topic…but with everyone talking about pitching and our rotation, has everyone forgot about Fernando Nieve when he was pitching he was half way decent.. he seemed to disappeared off the radar and he only hurt his hamstring..

Not at all. I expect him at this point to be in competition for the #5 spot either way. However, his history does not suggest him being able to continue that production. So while I am hopeful of his future I don’t think he can be counted on as a solution as much as an added bonus.

When he came on to the scene..against the Yankees he downright dominated and he seemed to be a different pitcher from prior years, it seemed like he was confident in himself, doe he came back to Earth he was still pretty decent. hopefully he can keep it that way maybe allow someone like Maine into the pen until we can see what he has to offer.

        1. trs86

Agreed, at this point if we sign another pitcher I think Maine, Niese, Nieve and even Perez should all be competing for spots.

I was reading that if the Cubs acquire Sheets he will become their number 1. I don’t know how Zambrano will feel to happy about a guy who hasn’t pitched in a year automatic pushes him back in the rotation without any prof he can still pitch…(then he’ll want to b traded to the mets a guy can dream…)

For me it’s just hard to know even into what category of expectations to put Nieve.

In a very small sample he absolutely showed some things that I would like to see more of, but in setting up a rotation for the 2010 Mets, a team I hope will be in contention for a post season berth, I’m just not sure how much of my hope to pin on Nieve because I’m not sure what he is.

I know what he’s not: He’s not our prized draft pick prospect finally reaching the majors; he’s not the key piece we acquired in a trade; he’s not a seasoned vet we’re counting on to lead the rotation; he’s not a seasoned vet we’re counting on to shore up the back end with consistent innings.

But I firmly believe he’s “in the mix” and should not be just cast aside or ignored. I hope he performs well enough in spring training that he gives the organization a difficult decision to make.

I think he could also fit nicely into the pen as a guy who throws relatively hard (though not as hard as he used to), misses bats and does not have a pronounced L/R split.

      2. baseballmercenaries

So basically could be a diamond in the rough.

        1. GravediggerHebner

I think you’ve hit on an excellent category to place him in. And as Wanny says, the skills he’s demonstrated suggest some versatility so he may be able to help the team in a number of ways.

          1. trs86

Yup, I am up for a loser to the pen cage match between Maine and Nieve.

      3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I have bad memory.. what was Nieve’s injury?

        1. GravediggerHebner

I don’t recall either but according to “BaseballMercenaries” original comment it was a hamstring.

          1. darknova306

He tore it running to first trying to beat out a throw. Forget who it was against.

Speaking of our rotation, Rangers got Rich Harden at $6.5M plus incentives which can go upto $9M. Plus an option year 2011 @ $11M ($1M buyout).

That’s not a bad deal at all. Sure he’s only reliable for 5 innings, but if compare what Sheets may get (assuming $6-7M guaranteed going to $12M), not bad at all.

    1. trs86

Something is fishy about Sheets. Wanting a 12 million guaranteed at the moment. I am afraid even Sheets does not think he is healthy.

  7. Mr North Jersey

Our rotation is just so unresolved heading into 2010 I find it hard just reading these posts discussing it.

Santana = had minor surgery and yet is probably the starter with the least question marks.

Pelfrey = with 450 IP has yet to show if he will ever get his head straight and raise his game to the next level.

Oliver Perez = The Mets poster child when it comes to “Falling Short Of Expectations”.

John Maine = The heart of a lion that may have peaked in 2007.

Jonathan Niese / Fernando Nieve = With a very small body of work under their belt the book is still out on what type of pitchers these guys are and therefore it would be unfair to project what type of pitchers they can be.

Mr. X-Factor = May be the pitcher or pitchers that saves Minaya’s job in 2010. Is what some hold out hope can be what turns the tide in helping 2010 be the year we (The Mets) get back into the post season.

After 3 seasons of unbearable seasons that gave us to epic collapses in September and what may be end up setting MLB’s record for most injuries in a single season. You have to ask have we finally hit rock bottom or is there still more to come?

If watching the Phillies & Yankees in the W.S. isn’t hitting rock bottom then I don’t know or better yet don’t wanna know what rock bottom is.

    1. GravediggerHebner

And here I thought rock bottom was watching Ramon Castro re-sign with the White Sox. Silly me. :-)
