Funny you should mention this as I earlier looked up Mr. Byrnes thinking of who’s out there. Apparently has only played in like 81 games total over the last 2 years because of Hamstring problems. Is due $11M this year. That would be something if they just cut him loose. If he’s out there I’d take a flyer on him at the right price. Especially, since the Met’s are experts at re-teaching running for players with Hamstring issues.:)
I completely agree. If he’s released I’d try to sign him up on the cheap in a heartbeat. Even if he’s the new 4th outfielder for awhile and then a bench guy when Carlos gets back that would merit taking a look to see what he’s got left. If it works out he could fill the Tatis role less the infield starts.
OK so obviously Castillo has more value than Byrnes at this point they are both owed roughly the same. However, is there any way to turn this to the Mets favor?
The Mets were rumored to be interested in Snyder as well…
I am thinking out loud. Would they rather say eat 4 million and get Castillo in return? Then the Mets use that 4 million towards Hudson? Of course they would have to have a desire to get Castillo as they would actually owe more money that way. It would be 2 years for 16 million for Castillo or 11 to dump Byrnes? Thus Castillo could cost them 5 million for 2 years?
Or perhaps they could involve Snyder’s 10:$4.75M, 11:$5.75M, 12:$6.75M club option ($0.75M buyout)some how.
Again, we could most likely just pickup Byrnes for free and keep Castillo too.
I don’t like the idea of trading Castillo for one damaged good, let alone two.
And I’d pass on Byrnes if I was personally paid for the Mets to take him on. It would be a real hoot to acquire him and then see him on the DL right next to Pagan and Beltran.
Dang. I missed Mets Hot Stove tonight at 7pm on SNY. Would have really like to see that show tonight.
Looking at the various websites, I’m seeing Beltran’s take on all this:
‘I am totally surprised by the reaction to my recent knee surgery. I have done nothing but follow the directions of my doctors.
Any accusations that I ignored or defied the team’s wishes are simply false. I also spoke to Omar Minaya about the surgery on Tuesday.
He did not ask me to wait, or to get another doctor’s opinion. He just wished me well… I do not know what else I could have done.’
To quote one of my all time favorite actors:
‘What we’ve got here is failure to communicate’…….
No one from team raised any issue until Wednesday, after I was already in surgery. I do not know what else I could have done. The most important thing here is that the surgery was a total success and I expect to be back on the field playing the game I love sooner rather than later’
MHS – You didn’t miss much. More talk of Carlos, Wright looking scruffy. Only thing I found of interest was Angel Pagan interview as I kept saying to myself “man I’m glad we didn’t package him yet in a deal”. Yeah, he might be injured 5 times by opening day but at least for now I have the illusion of a backup plan.
As for Carlos, I feel bad for him. Granted, I’m showing my pro-Beltran colors. Given the track records here I’m more apt to believe Carlos’s take on the situation even with Boros in the background. Hopefully, this doesn’t drag through the season. For kicks I was curious through 5 years how many games has he sat either through injury or rest and it’s at 133. 29 more games in year 6 and he’ll have missed 1 full year of his contract so far. Looking at it in that light, I could equally see the Met’s angst. No winner in this situation. Then again, they should know the back end of long term deals usually never turn out good.
This is just turning into a circus. Both sides seem to have a completely different story.
I’ve been watching baseball for over 40 years. I’m telling you, they just don’t grow young guys like they used to. Either ballplayers of old just played through every kind of hurt you could imagine, or the stock back then was just better. Because there just was not this rash of continuing injuries, especially with young players – such as the likes of Reyes, etc….
The Circus/Clown show is right. Why can’t the Mets handle anything in a nice and smooth manner? 1/2 the conversations I have about the Mets do not involve their on field play, but rather their off field antics. Annoying on several levels.
Should Byrnes truly be released, he’d have to clear waivers right? I mean no one’s gonna pay him $11 million are they? So I assume he clears then can sign with anyone he wants, so at that point does he have any suitors? I have no idea. But if I’m the Mets and Byrnes clears waivers, there’s no real point in NOT signing him for $400,000 and bringing him in, letting him get his $10,600,000 from AZ and see if he can help. He’s the 2010 Sheffield.

52 games in 2008, 84 in 2009. He’d fit right in.

Obviously he would be an injury concern but as a guy to protect Pagan and fill in a few days a week I think we could do worse.

True, but I was thinking that Pagan and Byrnes between the two would be able to survive.

I was just trying to figure out how we end up with Byrnes and Hudson instead of Castillo and uh…

I would take a Slappy/Gritty platoon if it means no Byrnes…

But thing is if we could get Byrnes and Hudson for roughly the same amount as Castillo and another backup CF I like the first option better.

It’s a no brainer assuming waivers are cleared.
I’m still hoping for an Ankiel signing, as he fits the CF and wonderful power off the bench role, but not seeing him signing…
