After a full day of Which came first “Beltran’s knee surgery or Beltran’s osteoarthritis”?
“Keepin It Real” today is just one person Matt Cerrone of MetsBlog when he summed
up the day’s events involving Carlos Beltran the best with the following.

“…i am totally lost… i really have no idea what is going on… “

So, what mini scandal is on the agenda today?

Reyes leaves the Mets to join a real circus as their new hire wire act?

Franceour voids his contract and leaves the Mets to become the next hot country star?

Johan in secret conversations with his agent to have him pressure the Mets to trade him pronto?
(this one you can almost say you couldn’t blame him for….)

Can we just get down to the business of baseball and fielding a contending team for 2010 w/o all this hoopla that seems to follow the Mets no matter where they are?????

Get well wishes to Carlos and hope it’s a speedy recovery. We really need you…..

Off the wall thought. The Indians are trying to dump Wood. He is owed 11 million. We could use him as a setup man. Say our budget for setup man was 3 million. Could we send that and Castillo to the Indians for Wood?

This fits this thread better so here it will go.

A commenter at Mets Merized Online made a comment that really made me pause which was essentially this:

-”If what Carlos Beltran says is true that he spoke with Omar Minaya about the surgery beforehand and Omar wished him well, this demonstrates that Omar is indeed merely a figurehead as some have suggested and that the Wilpons (largely Jeff) are actually running the show.”

It makes sense if Omar is truly a figurehead that you wouldn’t alert the players to that fact so they go about their business contacting “the GM” as they normally would about such things. A powerless GM shouldn’t merely wish someone well however, they should say “don’t do anything yet I gotta make a call” so while this suggests the Mets are even more dysfunctional than normal, it also suggests that Omar handled it poorly and is more evidence in the pile that he needs to go, because if he is a figurehead he needed to stall and contact the “true boss.”

Unless he is pissed about being a figurehead and seeks to destroy the organization, but that would perhaps not help his chances of future MLB employment.

The Puma and Sherman article at the NY Post site titled ‘Different Stories Emerge Around Beltran’ has the closest I’ve seen to a timeline yet on what took place when.

Reading that, it appears to me that when Omar spoke to Beltran on Tuesday wishing him well, it might have been before he got word from either Wilpon, Ricco, or both that the Mets didn’t want Beltran to have surgery until he got a 3rd opinion, or at least had time to ‘digest’ all info. Now…why Omar wasn’t in that Wilpon/Ricco loop at that time, I have no idea.

It goes on to say further:
‘On Tuesday night, Minaya was authorized to call Boras and tell him that no surgery could take place until Steadman, Altchek, Boras, Wilpon and Minaya had a conference call to discuss the matter.’

I thought using the word ‘authorized’ was really suspect as it makes it sound like Omar’s stings are being pulled by someone (Wilpon? Ricco?), but that could have just been the Post’s slant on this.
Doesn’t say if Omar every reached Boras.

It then goes on further to say that Boras left Vail Tuesday night not knowing what time the surgery was scheduled for on Wed. Whether that is true or not, we’ll probably never know. Reading between the lines, I’m thinking Boras is saying at that point Tuesday night, he had no idea the Mets wanted that surgery on hold.

      Further:
‘ The source said Wilpon called Boras at 8 a.m. Mountain time on Wednesday to reiterate this and that Ricco was on the phone, too.’

‘At 10 a.m., Wilpon called again to tell Boras he still had not connected with Altchek.’

‘At 11 a.m., Boras called Wilpon to tell him that he had just learned that Beltran had already undergone the surgery. Boras told The Post he was unaware when the surgery was scheduled. The Mets, of course, are incredulous that Boras would not know the start time was actually 7 a.m.’

It implies that Boras didn’t get word from anyone in the Met orgnaization to halt the surgery until Wed morning, after it was too late. Now, is that Boras manipulating a situation – or is it really mass mis-communication between all Met officials involved?

And I wonder if we’ll really ever know….

I was not able to read much today so thank you for the thorough summary. That is some interesting stuff. I need a little time to digest it. :-)

The thing is we are get bits and pieces from so many sources except the 2 that matter Beltran and Minaya.
