This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty 01-17-10

There’s really not much to say today. I am like everyone else in the blogosphere am tired and disgusted in the whole Carlos Beltran’s knee debacle, and allegedly Bengie ” The Latino Mo Vaughn”Molina  is supposed to sign with us any day now.So what are we Mets fans supposed to do while we count down the days until Joel Pinero signs with us? Well rooting for the Jets today is a start !

” Infamous Jets of the day – Richard Todd “

And with that said Here comes the INFAMY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to original Mets third baseman Don ” Popeye” Zimmer (1931). As we all know Zimmer became a Mets coach under Joe Torre in the mid ’70′s, was a successful Major League manager elsewhere.

New York Mets selected shortstop Roy Staiger in first round (24th pick overall) of free agent draft on January 17, 1970.

New York Mets selected shortstop, Kevin Elster in second round of free agent draft on January 17, 1984.

New York Mets signed free agent Rafael Santana on January 17, 1984. This signing solidified the Mets infield during most of the ’80′s.

New York Mets traded catcher Kelly Stinnett to the Milwaukee Brewers for the late Cory Lidle on January 17, 1996.

Pittsburgh Pirates signed pitcher Jeff D’Amico of the New York Mets as a free agent on January 17, 2003. D’Amico proved to be god-awful in his one year with the Mets , going 4-10 with a E.R.A of 4.94.

And later on today when you are watching the Jets / San Diego Chargers game, don’t forget that there are only 78 more days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

I see the Mets are going to send people to watch Sheets pitch on Tuesday.

If we can only get one, do you think it’s better to just try and sign Pineiro or take a flyer on Sheets?

Right now, I’m leaning towards Sheets, if the price is right….

this is the most hysterical thing (and sadly, probably accurate) I have ever seen about the Mets FO.

It’s the things closest to the truth that are the most funny or most sad. This is both.

Kevin Elster… That guy used to annoy me. I’m not sure why, but he did. Same way Tuefel annoyed me when he was in and Backman wasn’t. But thinking of how the 86 team was and how much Davey J. switched guys in and out, it’s amazing the amount of depth and versatility that team had.

Any one know of a website that has draft projections?

If you’re talking the actual MLB draft click on “Mack’s Mets” in our blogroll he’s all over that.

If you’re talking fantasy baseball, just google something along the lines of “fantasy baseball mock draft” (maybe include “2010″ to narrow the focus) and you should have a plethora to choose from. Some of them will have stat projections too.

If you’re talking about something else that I just didn’t understand, I apologize.

Was talking about the real honest to goodness draft. Curious to see what people were anticipating for the Metsies. Having read a couple, they seem to tag someone who throws hard and projects to be relief pitcher. Only the Mets. High draft pick… Relief pitcher… sigh.

I’m glad you had a positive comment about Rafael Santana because he gets short shrift when it comes to that era Mets team, and not just from fans but perhaps from teammates too as I seem to recall he had some trouble finding someone to hug in celebration at the end of the World Series in ’86.

I’ve heard Keith make a positive reference or two concerning ‘Rafey’, as he called him, concerning that ’86 team. Something along the lines of his contributions being overlooked when he really was a solid fielding SS.
