Hold onto that autograph, it might be worth something on eBay someday
Frankie Piliere of AOL Fanhouse released his list of the Top 100 Prospects in MLB and much to the surprise of those who continually say the Mets system doesn’t have any prospects, Piliere thinks otherwise.
According to his rankings, the Mets have three, which based on my basic math skills and my understanding that the Major Leagues have thirty teams would seem to be average:
- # 23 – SP Jenrry Mejia
- # 33 – OF Fernando Martinez
- # 58 – 1B Ike Davis
I’m going to forgive Piliere for spelling Mejia’s first name “Jennry” and instead focus on his kind words about the prospect:
- Mejia looks like of one of the most exciting pitching prospects the Mets have had in quite some time. He can reach the upper 90s with his fastball and has learned to pitch effectively and more frequently with his secondary pitches. The Mets will try to take it slow with this powerful young arm. We could see him in 2011.
So those among us who wanted the Mets to get a starting pitcher, lets make some vacation plans, get a hobby or otherwise find something to occupy our 2010. But be sure to keep 2011 free, it sounds like our wish might finally come true.

2010 could be a huge year for Mets prospects.
We could have a new RF, C, and SP (F-Mart, Thole and Niese) within the year.

we could but a lot of things would have to go wrong for that to happen

Not necessarily. Niese, if he pitches in ST like he showed he could before the injury, will crack the rotation early in the year. Our catching situation is mediocre at best, so if Thole shows continued success at AAA, he could be up by mid-season. And for FMart to be in RF during the year he would have to show health and solid numbers in AAA, and Failcoeur would have to regress from the couple of solid months he had post-trade. The only thing needed to ‘go wrong’ here is Failcoeur’s regression, which we should all be expecting until proven otherwise.
I may be one of the few, but I still have hope for F-Mart. Kid is 21 and has shown he can hit AAA pitching (877 OPS). He just needs a little more development and a whole lot of health.

I too really have some high hopes for FMart. Hard to predict this kid as he hasn’t really played a full year yet due to injury. I was glad to see we didn’t trade him this off season…..

I know I have had this discussion with you before, but what is the need for the nickname for Francouer? He was very productive for us and went out and played everyday in pain for much of it. I am not going to sit here and think his troubles are behind him but I think he earned our support of a shot instead of continuing to call him what our rivals did.

Well, congrats to him for a few good months. If he shows some consistency over the course of a full season, he’ll earn my respect. Until then, I’ll continue to amuse myself with his nickname.

Lets hope we don’t see Fmart as the RF this year.

I’m not ready to throw the towel in yet for 2010. I know on paper it’s not looking very rosy right now but it’s baseball – anything can happen over the course of a season.
It can’t possibly be as bad as last year. Hopefully, we’ll at least be watching a ML squad compete this year…..

With the wild card no team, well almost no team, is out of it until at least late July. Heck even we were slightly in it last year.
