The Sunday Question

With only two weeks left until Pitchers and Catchers report, do you think the Mets will pick up or trade for another Starting Pitcher?

I would say it is 50% right now that they pick up a “real” SP (as opposed to a couple more ST invite/scrap heap guys).

I would say it is 100% that they need 1 more SP.

I would feel much more comfortable with Neive in the BP and Neise getting up to speed in AAA to start the season, and another experienced SP in the rotation.

It also creats much more depth (the 6-8 is going to be super important), and hedges them against one of the injury guys having a set back.

If maine, ollie and Johan are in good shape to pitch (and from seeing Johan and Ollie, they both seem like they are), then I stil say the rotation could be a strong asset to the team, but I still want to see more depth, and not have to worrry about #5 starter roulette out of the gate.

i think the chances of a legit pitcher coming to Queens is slim to none…

maybe some more minor league deals but thats about it

I agree with this and I’ll put the odds of a strong #2 coming here before the start of the season as less than 50% – actually < 50% for any additions to the SP before opening day.

I vote for they’ll wait to see what they have in camp. With 3 pitchers coming back off injury I would think they’d want to see more from them to understand if they really need 1 or more additions. Also lets them keep the spring training injury risk for anyone they might trade for on the other teams side of the fence until ST is will into play. Thinking like a Harang here. Not that I’m advocating him, just an example. If they need 1 I think they’ll trade for someone if they need 2 they’ll probably sign someone like Pedro / Washburn and stay in house with a mix of guys for the last spot.

FWIW Omar is often quoted as saying things like “you can never have enough pitching” and “you are always looking to improve your pitching.”

But if I had to guess I’d say no. My caveat is unless someone in house gets injured, then I think they would sign someone off the scrap heap. But if everyone remains healthy, my gut feeling is the battle for spots on the ML team will take place between people already under contract to the organization.

Fairly safe I think to assume that Santana, Pelfrey, Perez and Maine if healthy will in some order be the 1-4 starters. Then Niese, Nieve, Fogg, Figueroa and friends will compete in ST for the last spot.

My gut/heart is telling me that 1 of those 7 guys whose name is not Santana is going to have a really big year. My gut/heart isn’t specifically telling me which guy but the shadowy image in my mind seems to be left handed (unless it’s a mirror trick) so I guess my gut/heart is telling me Perez or Niese. Whether that combined with a healthy productive Santana will be enough remains to be seen. The team may or may not make the post season but I feel there will be a truly compelling positive narrative in 2010 about 1 of these starting pitchers other than Santana, based on nothing factual whatsoever.

My crystal ball is telling me of the 3 – Maine/Pelf/Perez, it will be Maine who has a very good season.
Have nothing to back that up – more like just a hunch.

My money is on pelf and Ollie.

Minaya knows that everyone is ripping them for failing to address starting pitching (please don’t say he did with Fogg not even as a joke). Does that mean he will act and get a starter? I expect only if a great deal falls on his lap or worse if Ollie, Maine, or Pelfrey go down with an injury.

On 2nd thought scratch the injury part it will be only if a great deal falls on his lap.

It just doesn’t look like so far there are any teams Minaya can take advantage of. If we could only do the classic “Kazmir for Zammbrano” move on some team and get their top pitching prospect for say Figueroa. That would be awesome.

Mr North–check out Fogg’s numbers in 100 PA against RH batters last year out of the pen…they were excellent.

I say he is Darren Oliver 2.0….a horrible starter for years who clearly was meant to be a 6th/7th inning guy.

Actually I am way ahead of you here is a comment from yesterday.

I will say that knowing nothing about Fogg with no memories of watching his past performances. If you look solely at his numbers they seem to suggest he was a guy that for years tried to be a starter but for whatever reason just never excelled and after being shutdown and placed on a 60 day dl for a groin injury late in 2008. Signed in 2009 with Colorado and seemed to have pitched ok coming out of the pen for most of 2009.

Having pitched in Colorado I’m sure if he makes the team he will look forward to pitching in Citi Fields.

It says that out of the pen in 09 his numbers are.
        2.74/ERA 42.2/IP 28/H 16/BB 24/SO 13/ER 4/HR 1.031/WHIP

One hopes his bullpen numbers in 2009 carry over in 2010.

          Oops! Please accept my apologies!

And those numbers are even more amazing when you look at the L/R splits…righties hit like .170 against hit with 4 XBH in 96 PA.

          1. Mr North Jersey

            no apologies needed.

my guess is there is a less than 95 % chance the Mets either trade for a quasi front line starter. I read today that the reds aren’t in cost cutting mode – so cya later arroyo / harrang and i doubt the mets will go after mesch or bannister. i hope than the mets dont go after smoltz itcould possibly look like either mickey loilich ( hmm where did i see his name mentioned today?) or frank tanana part 2 – totally inefective and not wanting to play for our ballclub.
