In an article written by Tim Sullivan of The San Diego Union Tribune he quotes Padres CEO Jeff Moorad to say, “I think the fairest description of our point of view is that we continue to be committed to doing what’s best for the long-term interest of the organization,†He went on to say “As a result, no player is untouchable. And while we’re mindful of players’ individual popularity, we won’t put one player ahead of the long-term interests of the club.”
Tim Sullivan further quotes him to say “I’m confident that (General Manager) Jed (Hoyer) and John Boggs will have a discussion at some point about Adrian and his future. While I’d be thrilled to have him part of the organization for the long term, the early signals indicate his cost will be greater than our ability to pay.â€
What does that mean for us? Probably nothing at all with Ike Davis on the horizon but it begs the question. If Adrian Gonzalez does become available should the Mets and how far should the Mets go in acquiring him?

he would be nice to have. But I expect the asking price to start out at ridiculous, and eventually work down to not quite as ridiculous.
A good player, but not sure if it is worth pushing the entire farm (and possibly young ML talent) in on a 1B. Especially since it would be a Johan situation, where you have to commit to an over the top LT deal to get him to extend.
Not sure I see the Mets trading for him as a rental.
Maybe the Mets get lucky for a change, and develop their own stud (c’mon, Ike!) Much cheaper that way.

I bet his name will come up on every trade situation until he signs that long term contract.
I think the Mets will give Ike Davis at least 1 or 2 chances before going to trading for Gonzo or someone major like Bay or Wright goes down for a long period of time.

‘No player is untouchable’.
Where have I heard that before? Oh wait, could it have been from Omar back in ’08?
I have to take some of what comes out here with a grain of salt. That being said, they probably are going to have a problem keeping him.

Also quite posible they hold him for this season to see how things go, and don’t make a big circus trying to trade him until next off season. ight as well get some use out of him.
for the Mets, it gives them another year to figure out shere the team stands overall, and more importantly, how Davis is progressing.
A breakout year in AAA (especially hitting lefties), even without any ML time, and i doubt you see them making a huge $$ and talent investment in a 1B.
Wonder if this statement was directed straight at Boston?

I actually think they keep him until trading deadline of 2011, like Cerrone. They need butts in the seats and he does that. Have to weigh money lost into the equation of prospects obtained.
I know Grave will run and hide on this one, but I would look to try and get Chris Young (the highest paid Padre). He has a ton of potential but is similar to Ollie in consistency. Could be a steal, could be a dud.

I will be interested inany talented SP that comes as a salary dump without significant talent going back.

I guess what is debatable is how talented he is?
Also, I have no idea if they want to trade him or what they would want. Doing it now would for sure be selling low. He’s got this left: 10:$6.25M, 11:$8.5M club option

I’m a fan of Chris Young, when he was a basketball player at Princeton. I saw him play in person a couple times, he was quite good. But as far as the baseball pitcher I really do see him as you hinted, the right handed Oliver Perez. Which to be fair means I guess there is still hope he puts it all together.
If taking him were a prerequisite to acquiring AGon it wouldn’t stop me, put it that way.

I can’t help it but I find this random quote on MLBTR funny:
Ekstrom, 26, was done in by hits and home runs allowed in an 18.3-inning big league stint last year.
Isn’t that like saying the murder victim was done in by death?

Like I said a couple wks ago….”Omar gets AGone,Young&Bell,
while The Mets are out West just after the Allstar break, saving
our season and both his and Jerry’s job.”

can he fire jerry before the trip, then do the deal? Even better that way!

I think Omar needs to worry about his back.
If The Mets start to fail again this season,
it will be hard to make Jerry the scapegoat
given what hes been provided to work with.

I think this is it for both of them along with the core as a whole.

I think Omar is dead man walking, and he knows it.
But, he will get paid 1mill+ in 2010-2012 regardless, so he shouldn’t be sweating too bad.
Maybe the rational off season is planning ahead, so he can piont to it when he has to interview for his next job?
he already has to live down lee/sizemore, imagine if he paniced (and jeffy let him) and tanked the farm in a misguided attempt to add veterans that bomb?

True enough. It may have been you that said it, but it’s almost like the Mets are refusing to saddle themselves with big contracts or bad trades in a move to get ready for a new GM.

I agree Fongy. I just hope it does not have to come at the sacrifice of what looks to me as the last year of the core.

As much as I dont like, trust or
believe in Omar anymore,
I hope everything goes very, very well and
we atleast contend. Making it even more difficult for
Fred&Jeff to
bounce him and/or Jerry.
What CANNOT happen is we
play around.500,never really make a run in Aug/Sept
And just Jerry becomes the scapegoat.
