This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty – The Sharon Chapman Runs For the Tug Mcgraw Foundation Edition 02-13-10

Hi Guys! Sorry I couldn’t post my daily column yesterday, but I had to take Mrs. Rustyjr to the hospital to get her gallbladder taken out. So by the time that we got home , she was in a lot of pain and I being the good husband that I am tended to her every morphine induced whim. Other than listening to Boomer Essaison tearing Ken Rosenthal a new orifice I really didn’t follow the events of yesterday, so I really don’t have much to say about the Mets positive or negative. But our friend Greg Prince asked us to link to his amazing blog Faith and Fear In Flushing, where he has a interview with Sharon Chapman – A long time Mets fan who is in training for the New York City Marathon. She is using the marathon to raise money for the Tug McGraw Foundation, which is a charity that has devoted its resources to making the lives of people coping with brain cancer, post- traumatic stress disorder and trauma brain injuries better. “Help Sharon in her race for a cure ! Good old  Tug  would be proud !!”

And now …. ON WITH THE INFAMY !!!!!

Birthday wishes go out to middle reliever from the ’01 team, Brian Rose.Brian didn’t distinguish himself in the three games that he pitched in during that season, sporting a E.R.A of 4.15giving up four earned runs on 10 hits in 8.2 innings. He was demoted to AAA and never was never seen in a Mets uniform again.

On This Date in 2003 the Mets signed free agent pitcher David Cone.David I hate to say had made a ill fated comeback with the Metsthat year. He was out of baseball for a year and it showed. There was very little zip left on his once menacing fast ball and he had to rely on his breaking pitches. He would start in five games that year, going 1-3 with a E.R.A north of six. His last game before retiring was May 28th. I admit that I was crushed, I wanted him to succeed because he was one of my all time favorite Mets pitchers, and I hated the fact that he became known as a hired gun who helped propel the New York Yankees into the dynasty that they became !
And while you are yearning for the start of Spring Training just remember – There are just 51 more days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

Joel Sherman is switching his twitter account name from nyp_joelsherman to joelsherman1. I wonder if he got fired or is just leaving the Post. Bart Hubboch is currently switching from covering baseball to football, so there might be a shake-up going on over there.

Rusty – thank you so much for posting this story, especially under the circumstances. I hope that your wife has a speedy and comfortable recovery, and that the morphine induced whims aren’t too onerous. You’re a good guy!

if you dont mind me asking, how does one know when their gall bladder turns to the darkside?

        1. rustyjr

when you are having severe cramps constipation, severe pains after eating fatty foods etc it was totally impacted

          1. njstuckintx

Uff da! Well, pass along the speedy recovery wishes, for sure. And tell her thanks for having this happen prior to the season! heh.

          2. stickguy

I thought that was just normal after a day of eating and beveraging at Shea. Who knew?

          3. metsfan4decades

            LOL…
The gall bladder can become diseased, which happened to my hubby. Besides pain, made him severely ill.

In my case, I have gall stones diagnosed over 2 years ago. I still have that body part though, pain and all. After watching what my husband went through over 15 years ago, I just can’t bring myself to go for the surgery. I know it’s a lot more advanced now but some things just stick in your memory….

      2. sharonc

So long as you’re catering to the whims, you have license to make a good natured joke about them

  3. metsfan4decades

Oh wow, Rusty. Hope Mrs. Rusty is feeling better soon.

Loved Tug McGraw back in the day. That’s what we need – a rally cry like ‘You gotta Believe!’

I guess we’ve got ‘I Believe in Comebacks’ for this year.
    That’s O.K., I don’t mind being the underdogs.

    1. rustyjr

yeah except Ya Gotta Believe!!! wasn’t thought up by some Madison Avenue hack – it was from the heart !!

Lopez fired Boras. Hmmmm…. very interes-tink.

    1. stickguy

      sign him. now.

This is exactly the type of move that Omar didn’t do the last couple of years to give them that extra depth.

As much as I want Slappy gone, at this point I am hoping he stays healthy, since i don’t think it will go well if Cora has to be the everyday 2B, and there is no one else on the team remotely qualified.

      1. trs86

The problem is that it would almost take balls to do it. Your bench would be
Blanco, Cora, Tatis, GMJ, and Lopez? What would the point of Cora even be then? I know Lopez is better than Castillo and Cora but what would their roles be?

        1. stickguy

I don’t care. If they aren’t good enough, that means the FO made the team better.

The obvious solution is dump Castillo. Unload the sunk cost.

But you are right, it would take brass ones, and if there is anything this FO hasn’t shown, it is that.

Brain cancer took my father from me when I was 10 years old so I applaud Sharon’s efforts, and Greg and Rusty’s promotions of them, and I wish her tremendous success.

I’ve never done it but it’s pretty apparent through observation that just running a marathon is an incredibly trying experience. To put oneself through that for a good cause is a truly noble thing.

    1. metsfan4decades

Ms. Chapman is going to run 26.2 miles? I’d be lucky to go .2 miles.
I also give her and those like her tremendous credit.

      1. sharonc

Thanks guys. Training for a marathon is definitely a lot of work (I’m running my first one May 2nd, so I can get it right in November), but being a part of Team McGraw is making the process a meaningful and fulfilling one.

    2. sharonc

My condolences on the loss of your dad.

As far as the infamy part of the post, I had no recollection of Brian Rose as a Met at all. I lived in Boston and attended many Red Sox games when he pitched for them and was familiar with him on their team but am surprised to have it pointed out that he was ever a Met.

  7. stickguy

Hey, just saw El Duque on TV.

He was doing a commercial for something called the Airless water valve (on the DIY network).

I could not understand 1 word he said, and I have no idea how they came up with him as the spokesman!

    1. rustyjr

did he say beisball been beddy beddy good tu mi?

  8. metsfan4decades

I think Joe D.’s latest post over on Mets Merized sums up my optimism on this 2010 season:

‘Only Health Stands in Our Way’.

Lots of talent on this team, guys. Virtually the same team predicted by SI to go the distance last year. If we were considered that good last year, surely we can compete this year….right?

    1. Kingman 26

      Of course!!

And may I say that in King and Stick’s Parade of Partial Positiviality, you are of course Queen of the Parade!

Ollie is going to make our support last year finally not look so silly!

      :-)

Rusty my friend, I sincerely hope Mrs. Staub has a VERY rapid recovery!

  10. gategem

Here’s wishing Mrs. Rustyjr a very speedy recovery.
