Frenchy: “That’s the way you shut everybody up – by winning ballgames.”

According to David Lennon’s Twitter Page: Francoeur on negativity around #Mets this offseason: “That’s the way you shut everybody up – by winning ballgames.”

Tell me that does not sound a little 86ish.  I don’t care what anyone says about his ability, he’s a great guy to have on the team.  His energy over a full season could be exactly what we need.

His quotes about lowering the wall in CF were pretty funny. (presumably talking about under the apple)
“That was the funniest thing. I’d be you maybe 1 more goes out.”
“Balls are going to be flying out of there.” (deadpan)

Yeah, I read those too. He’s a smart-ass and I like that. I wonder why?

  2. njstuckintx

He’s right. Enough with all the chit chat, let’s see something to back up the words.

And I hope, during the season, he guns out Larry trying to score on a sac fly, then gets jacks one in his subsequent at bat, just to stick it to the Braves with a little extra salt. I dislike the Phils, for sure, but the Braves still hold the top spot with me that’d I’d like to see the Mets drip a little hot sauce, salt, lemon and lime juice into their open wounds.

well, still 45 days until Opening Day before they can back anything up.

117 losses for the Braves to join the Phillies with 10k losses. Probably not until next year.

      1. njstuckintx

Due to work restrictions on my interweb searching, I can’t check it myself, so… anyone have access to who else is close to 10K losses? Is it just the bravos and Le Phils?

        1. ceetar

Phils are at like 10130 or something, Braves are 117 shy as I said. I don’t the Pirates might be next at ~300 out.

Giants have been over 10k wins for a while, and I think someone else joined them recently, possibly the Dodgers.

        2. ceetar

Cubs and Cardinals both have 10k wins as well.

Braves need 146 more wins for 10k, which they _may_ get before the losses. a .499 winning percentage. (10167 losses for the Phillies, 1000 shy of 10k wins)

Pirates are 9,753 9,579. It’s going to be close if they get the wins or losses first.

(Maybe I should just make a post about this plainly.)

          Mets are 3,655 3,981.

          1. njstuckintx

WOuldn’t mind reading that post at all. Interesting stuff. Was this all NL only research? The Yanks I would think would have to be over 10K wins, maybe even Boston.

          2. ceetar

both are pulling close, and having winning records, but are a couple of seasons away.

National League is 30 years older or whatever, makes a big difference.

Frenchy seems like such an upbeat guy. Wonder, if he was on this team the past 3 years, if he would have been able to keep up that enthusiasm with the way ’07 and ’08 ended and the disaster that was ’09. I’d like to think so. And if yes, he’s going to be nothing short of a positive influence on this team no matter how things shake out.

  4. darknova306

His upbeat attitude and energy are nice to have on a team that has looked complacent at times. Hopefully his bat doesn’t regress too much toward his history of suck.

    1. stickguy

I think Bay is going to add a lot to the upbeat/professionalism parade.

Not too worried about this team getting complacent or lazy. Hopefully that translates into hustle and solid fundies also!

      1. stickguy

        And no lollygagging.

  5. oleosmirf

talk is cheap…lets hope the Mets can actually back it up this year…

Everybody (myself included) slams Omar/The Mets for not picking up good role players, well they did just that with the Church/Frenchy trade. He doesnt need to be a superstar out there (we already have all starts in Bay and Beltran in our OF!) he just needs to do what he does best, play good D, and keep the lineup moving/driving in runs.

My expectations of him are just that for this year, .270-.280 avg. Hopefully a .330ish OBP with a few jacks and a bunch of RBI’s. If he does that, coupled with his great attitude, the Mets could really have something going this year. Coupled with the leadership of Johan/Wright/Reyes, the work ethic and exhuberance of Murphy, and the chip that Pelf/Maine/Ollie seem to be carrying this year, I’m really excited for this season to be honest.

Did anyone see this “article” from fangraph’s writer Alex Remington yesterday?
    http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/rod-barajas-is-not-the-answer-to-your-prayers-omar-minaya

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more biased anti-Mets article in my life. And that’s saying something.
-Alex bashes the signing of Barajas…even though it’s a minor-league deal.
-He says Murphy can’t play first base, linking to an article that doesn’t even really say that. Anyone who watched Murphy at first last year would know that he’s at least adequate at the position.
-Alex bases Frenchy and his low lifetime OBP, despite his dramatic roller-coaster ride of a career over the past few years and how he performed for the Mets last season.
-He also links to the infamously moronic fangraphs article comparing Jason Bay to Josh Willingham.

Luckily, the first commenter called him out on it. He responded, attempting to defend himself…but check out the website his name linked to: http://www.chop-n-change.com/

    *sigh* fangraphs…

    1. ceetar

There is such an oversaturation of information out there sometimes.

On Francoeur, he has a lot to prove. The small sample size of last year with the Mets is not something to bank on. But to stick to the idea that it’s possible for him to be a contributor or a legitimate RFer, or that he’s the worse in the league is silly.

      1. oleosmirf

i think Francouer is perfectly fine for the 6th/7th spot…

    2. oleosmirf

i disagree with his points about Murphy and Bay but the fact that the Mets didn’t make a serious attempt at upgrading the rotation is still mind boggling.

Its just asking too much for 3 SP, coming off bad years and a bunch of rookies for the 5th spot to all have good years.

I mean even if they signed Bedard or Wang (knowing that they wouldn’t be ready till June) at least that would give us something to hope for in the event Operation Hope and Pray doesnt pan out…

      1. prismo

For the most part I agree with you – that the rotation could have used another solid piece.

But on the other hand, this is pretty much the same rotation that was predicted to get into the WS by SI last season.

        1. oleosmirf

well if Santana, Pelfrey pitch like they did in 08 and Ollie and Maine pitch like they did in 07 if K-Rod, Wright, Beltran and Reyes play like they did in 08 and Bay, Santos, Murphy, Francouer play like they did in 09 then we most certainly will be in contention for a pennant.

          1. trs86

But what if the Phillies play like the did in the first half of 2008 and 2009 and then Santana, Pelfrey pitch like they did in 08 and Ollie and Maine pitch like they did in 07 if K-Rod, Wright, Beltran and Reyes play like they did in 08 and Bay, Santos, Murphy, Francouer play like they did in 09 then we most certainly will be in contention for a pennant.

We win in a landslide. LOL.

Man this season needs to start.

    3. metsfan4decades

At best, Fangraph’s is a site I might read strictly for the entertainment value, if I’m bored….
They’re baseball snobs over there and the ‘regular’ posters even more so. Try and post a comment that goes against their tide and they’ll jump on you for not having enough baseball acumen to be posting there.

    4. trs86

LOL, so let me guess they use UZR to bash Bay and then ignore it for Murphy. I have grown tired of that site because it is used like the baseball bible.

      1. oleosmirf

well the beauty of statistics is you can use them to show anything and everything you want…

        1. trs86

especially when most people can’t even calculate the stat used. I have researched all I can on UZR but still the average person could not calculate their score.

          1. oleosmirf

in my opinion, the best way to judge a player is my two eyes.

hustle, desire, baseball IQ, arm strength, leadership, arm accuarcy, luck, “clutch”. all those things cant be explained through stats without significant flaws that is.

          2. trs86

Your eyes, however, Oleo can be quite biased. Even more than stats.

          3. oleosmirf

but combined with traditional stats like batting average, HR, rbis, runs, OBP you can get a pretty good idea how a player is.

            i mean people over-anaylze everything these days…

          4. GravediggerHebner

In fact, there are entire websites solely devoted to over-analysis.

I consider FanGraphs to be one. Depending on one’s perspective, TRDMB too.

          5. trs86

Hate to do that Grave but that will be a $25 fine for criticizing the blog. I will take it out of your salary once you have one.

          6. Mr North Jersey

Amen I agree 100%. Stats are good but sometimes people rely on them too much imo.

I don’t recall with who it was but I remember when the Mets signed Tatis someone quotd his numbers that they were not that bad in 2009 and I remember saying my memory was when it mattered most after Delgado went down and before we were out of it just after the break last season Tatis failed us.

The truth lies somewhere in the middle I guess but the point is numbers don’t explain it all.

Look at Jeter (did I just say Jeter?)he has been what many Yankee fans and media alike call him a player that is more than his stats.

    5. GravediggerHebner

I read it last night and started typing a response but resigned myself to the fact that I couldn’t win with “those people” so I just cleared the reply box and moved on to another site.

It’s a shame that they’ve become so caught up in blind Omar bashing and Met-fan baiting because what I used to find to be an informative and entertaining website that I read often to help myself become a more well-rounded baseball fan, I rarely visit anymore.

      1. stickguy

for many people, it seems to be way beyond looking objectively at what the team has and needs, and trying to prject how it will do.

        Instead, it is personal now.

I would personally be very happy to not even know or care who the GM was. Actually, I don’t really care that much now.
