It’s Official! Mets Sign Barajas

According to Mike Axisa of MLBTradeRumors “The Mets officially signed free agent catcher Rod Barajas to one-year Major League deal today. He’s guaranteed $500K, with another $400K to come if he’s on the team’s Opening Day roster. Easily attainable games played incentives could put another $1MM in Barajas’ pocket. “

Great signing! I love how now after media outlets were dumping on the Mets because they didn’t have a legit Catcher, now all of a sudden Barajas isn’t good enough.

    Seriously, you can’t win.

Anyway, great contract. I’m surprised Barajas couldn’t get better.

If it’s a guaranteed ML contract, why wouldn’t Barajas be on the Opening Day roster? The only thing I could think of is that he either gets injured or gets dumped ($500K for a months work is pretty sweet).

Yea this was a good move. There is plenty bottom to be had that can yield results.

Just think about the difference in cost and output between Molina and Barajas. This by far a better move.

      Totally agree with you both.

And Case, you CAN win regarding those media outlets, by laughing at their ridiculous, biased idiocy!

Omar has dramatically improved the catcher position defensively and game-calling-wise, which, for this team, is of paramount importance.

      I second that “great contract.”

Assuming he makes his incentives, Barajas (34) gets 1 year/$1.9 mil to be the starting catcher. Meanwhile in this same free agent class:

      Starters
      Bengie Molina (35) 1/$4.5
      Gregg Zaun (38) 1/$1.9 + $2.25 club option/$250,000 buyout
      Ivan Rodriguez (38) 2/$6
      Jason Kendall (35) 2/$6

      Backups
      Miguel Olivo (31) 1/$2 + $2.5 club option/$500,000 buyout
      Yorvit Torrealba (30) 1/$750,000 + $3.5 mutual option/$500,000 buyout
      Mike Redmond (38) 1/$850,000
      Jose Molina (34) 1/$800,000 + $1.2 club option
      Brian Schneider (33) 2/$2.75
      Ramon Castro (33) 1/$800,000 + 1.2 club option/$200,000 buyout

I would include Henry Blanco’s contract but trying to figure out all the bonuses gives me a headache.

He could’ve gotten more if he accepted arbitration!

Agreed. As much as I can’t stand Omar, this was the signing I very much wanted as soon as Molina started saying “at least 2 guaranteed years”. Great signing. Idiots that complain he’s not good enough are still spoiled by the Piazza days.

Grave made an interesting point today on an earlier thread, discussing the % concerning turnover for this team – especially as it relates to the disappointing ’07 and ’08 seasons.
I believe it wasn’t quite high enough to suit Grave but considering the turnover and newbies on the team, he felt the two catchers are the ones who might yield the greatest return as it relates to affecting the team and team attitude.

I just thought that was worth repeating as the more I thought about it, the smarter it sounded……

MF4D thank you. I’m going to print your comment and frame it because my 2010 will be all downhill from here. ;-)

The assist should go to Ceetar as he’s the one who sparked the thought in me. Having read a lot in general about Barajas’ and Blanco’s defense and specifically today about Blanco getting on Escobar for “being a minute late” I think these two new catchers can really make a big impact on the team as a whole. I’m pretty pumped about it actually.

That Greg Maddux and Johan Santana both swear by Blanco is one hell of an endorsement.

It is indeed an excellent point. I was trying to think of a comparable pure catching twosome in Met’s history from a defensive perspective and the only combo that comes to mind is Jerry Grote / Duffy Dyer. Defensive wise I’d give the tip to the ’70′s combo but with the offense Barajas is capable of adding the overall may well go to our 2010 tandem. Team’s shaping up nice.

Was this tied into Ric’s 41 year old wife getting arrested yesterday on Domestic Battery for puttin the smack down on the 60 year old Ric?

Either way that’s a great clip. My Mrs. will love that. Thx.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Yikes no I didn’t know about the arrest. My brother turned me onto this DJ Steve Porter guy who makes the video and sound remixes and I know TRS is a fan of Flair so when I found he made that I wanted to pass it on.

If you have time you should check out some of his other work. He does one of Allen Iverson “talkin’ ’bout practice” and one each of the “Shamwow” and “Slap Chop” infomercials that are quite entertaining.

Can someone please tell me what that drill is all about down at ST – where the Met pitchers are fielding balls at second base? Is that the ‘depth’ solution for Castillo at second? LOL…..

    Very strange.
