The Murphy Dilemma

I know everyone feels good about Spring Training but I thought of this scenario and I would like to find out what our readers think.

Let’s say Mike Jacobs out hits and out plays Murphy and consequently boots him off of First Base.  What is to happen to Murphy?  Is he a good enough Bench Player?  Do you platoon him at first?

Here is the monkey wrench…Ike Davis might be a year away, maybe two at most.  If he is to be the next every day First Baseman(like a Wright at third)  Would it be even fair to keep Murphy around?  Or do you try and find another position for him?

Thoughts  TRDMB readers?

I don’t see it as a very realistic possibility that Jacobs will out hit Murphy (although he might out “slug” him) and I don’t see any possibility that Jacobs will field better than Murphy. I guess what I’m saying is I don’t see it as at all likely that Jacobs will win a contest with Murphy for the 1B job.

But for the sake of discussion I will assume he just did. What I would do at that point is send Murphy to AAA and: play him at DH fulltime and hope to trade him to the AL; or play him at 1B fulltime to better learn a craft he’d obviously failed at if Jacobs beat him out; or play him at 2B to see if there is one last hope that might work out; or play him all over in hopes of his becoming a valuable utility player in the future.

But to me none of those things seem as likely or as realistically possible as his simply winning the 1B job over Jacobs.

    1. ceetar

I agree, I don’t see Murphy not being the firstbaseman, even if Jayson Stark wants to say Davis could make the team out of springtraining. hahaha.

A deeper question is what do they do with Murphy if/when Ike Davis is ready? What are there long term plans for him? It seems to me they have always viewed him as a temporary Met, but what happens if he does keep up the good D, hits’ .280/.340 and hits 20 home runs? Trade? try yet another position? Try another position for Davis?

Murphy is basically playing to extend his mets career, because he’s aiming to do good enough that even if they call up Ike, Murph is hitting too well to give him playing time to see what we got? Obviously if we’re out of it (we won’t be) and Murphy is average at best you bring up Davis and play him, but that’s the least likely scenario.

      1. GravediggerHebner

Well I will say my heart skipped a beat one day recently when I was reading one of the very prolific Mack’s articles at Mack’s Mets and he said something to the effect of “you heard it here first – Ike Davis will play so well at AAA this year that the Mets will trade him mid-season for a # 2 SP.”

So that seems like one way for the situation to unfold: Murphy as the starting 1B for the Mets for the next 5 years or so and Davis bringing the pitcher that puts the Mets over the top in the division.

        1. ceetar

if that is a serious #2, you almost have to do it. I’d be all over that. It’s always harder to find solid pitching than one offensive bat. Especially if Murphy is holding down first rather well.

          1. GravediggerHebner

            Agreed.

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

I almost got a sense that Davis is the new FMart in Mets FO eyes. I doubt he gets traded.

          3. DNDJohan aka kistics

            But I agree.

      2. trs86

That would be quite the improvement from Murphy. To me about as likely as Jacobs taking his spot. .40 OBP points and 8 more HR.

        1. saltygary

Did you get my PM? I don’t know if I did it right using the feature on the top left of the site…

          1. trs86

I will go check it. We don’t use that feature very much.

          2. trs86

            I did not.

          3. saltygary

OK I think it worked this time. Take a look when you have a chance.

          4. trs86

I got it and replied. Thanks.

      3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I think by the end of this year, we will all have a decent idea where Murphy and Davis are. I think they both have and NEED this year to prove that they will be a good 1B for the Mets.

      4. metsfan4decades

‘even if Jayson Stark wants to say Davis could make the team out of spring training.’

        J. Heyman just said the same thing on WFAN. So what do they all know about Ike Davis that we don’t?

        1. wannybackstra

Maybe they have some way of knowing that he can hit lefthanded pitchers even a little bit and that major league pitchers won’t kill him with breaking pitches.

        2. DNDJohan aka kistics

I heard that too. Heyman said that Davis plays better defense than any of the three guys, combine that with all the hype, you can make the case for him making the team.

          1. ceetar

Hype? Howdoes that stat translate to runs scored?

          2. GravediggerHebner

            Hype/{Downtown Julie Brown x Wooba Wooba Wooba} + {Draft slot – Hair Style}/MLB Legacy

  2. saltygary

It’s going to take a lot for Murphy to play himself out of that job. Non-issue.

Also wasn’t a fan of the Jacobs signing but at least there is a lot more depth at multiple positions than last year.

  3. ceetar

    Unrelated to here, but:

I hate when Tweets, or blog titles, are in all caps. Obnoixious, even if i can’t spell it. (I see one in the spyder right now even)

The attitude of accusing a disagreeing commenter of being the ‘enemy’ annoys me. Also, discrediting what someone writes because of a grammatical error or typo.

just wanted to get that off my chest. Now back to your regularly scheduled “what if Murphy sucks?” debate.

    1. GravediggerHebner

I always understood that all caps was YELLING so I try to avoid it but occasionally I use them in lieu of ITALICS because I don’t know how to italicize something in the comments section.

The calling a dissenting commenter “enemy” is a cop out when you don’t have an actual point to make in an disagreement.

I will however often discredit someone for grammatical errors or typos, but hopefully noting that as the specific reason for my discrediting them, not that their point is invalid, just that they could’ve expressed it correctly yet for whatever reason (hurry, indifference, lack of knowledge of their native tongue) they didn’t.

I’m not as bad as some more famous and widely read bloggers but I am quite the comma splice king but I know it so I expect some criticism for it.

      1. ceetar

I’m horrible with grammar. (gee, NY, maybe you should’ve tought grammar? even a little?)

caps have their place, but shouting blog titles just bothers me for some reason. some sort of “Hey, over here, read this! This one’s better!” like a newspaper hawker.

        1. GravediggerHebner

I saw that title too, I assume we’re referring to the same one from Metsgrrl. I guess I can just assume yelling is part of the personality associated with someone who refers to themselves as a “grrl?”

Because when I read “grrl” I hear either a fierce jungle creature and I get the anger/yelling/attention aspect or I hear Tony The Tiger saying “they’re Grrreat!” and I just crack up.

          1. metsfan4decades

You know I had to go over and read that article when it first caught my eye. I thought it had something to do with the Mets not coming far. I was way off. She was ‘shouting’ about a caption on a Yahoo Sports article for a pic on a young teenager looking adoringly at Longoria as he autographed something for her. Said something about a ‘crush’. metgrrl as incensed by that, implying the female gender has not come far enough in some eyes.

As a member of the female gender, what she’s complaining about wouldn’t have even occurred to me, had I read that Yahoo story w/o reading hers.

          2. ceetar

Probably notbaseball appropriate, but some things are a little too PC in the sense that they foster the very ‘isms they’re trying to fight against

          3. ceetar

She’s one, but hardly the only offender. I know it’s silly, but it irks me for some reason. Aw well.

      2. saltygary

Kingman is my personal spell check. I’m always rushing and even though I have spell check in my browser I just lack the time/effort sometimes to re-read my post. Especially on simple posts.

      3. DNDJohan aka kistics

so… “I’m sorry honey, I’ll never do it again” is not a word?

        1. GravediggerHebner

          :-) No, it’s, a, phrase. :-)

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

            How about Imsorryhoneyillneverdoitagain ?

          2. GravediggerHebner

I think that qualifies as a word, if only unofficially.

        2. ceetar

Eventhough I probably will do it again!

Hey, the. Mobile version of the site doesn’t have/get new posts, just FYI

      “Obnoixious”

      Were you born in Brooklyn?

  4. wannybackstra

Who cares what Mike Jacobs does in a short sample of Spring Training in which he will probably face about half a slate of minor league pitchers and defenses?

Whatever he does should not overshadow his 550 game MLB track record of a being a prolific outmaker (with the bat only).

    1. saltygary

      Yup Yup!

  5. wannybackstra

As far as Davis goes, let’s worry about moving parts around for him after he proves himself a little further.

  6. vcmetsfan28

If Mike Jacobs beats out Daniel Murphy this spring then Murphy is not nearly the player we thought he would become.

Even thought I think there is zero chance that Jacobs beats out Murphy I will assume this will happen for the sake of conversation. So if Jacobs wins the job I think Murphy should get the last bench spot and be used as pinch hitter off the bench. In his short time with the Mets Murphy has a knack for the big hit. He hit 290 with RISP last season and something like 340ish with RISP with 2 outs.

Lets just hope that this scenerio never occurs and Jacobs is reserved as the left handed pinch hitter off the bench.

    1. wannybackstra

      I’ve edited this sentence:

“Lets just hope that this scenerio never occurs and Jacobs is… left…off the bench.”

      1. vcmetsfan28

i could live with that too… but it seems like Manuel wants his power on the bench.

Hey this would not be the great Vcarver would it?

          1. metsfan4decades

That would be cool. I remember Vcarver….

          2. gategem

What I loved about Vcarver was while he may not have been always right he was never wrong.

          3. Mr North Jersey

Oh man me and him went round and round a few times he loved talking Mets Finances I swear would drive me crazy. That and when he told me Murphy would be good in LF due to his UZR rating. LoL that just about set me over the deep end LoL.

  7. metsfan4decades

I saw Jacob’s interview on Mets Hot Stove the other night. He’s convinced he absolutely can be the every day staring 1st baseman for the Mets. Gotta love the confidence. But….made me wonder if he took a good look at the situation in regards to Murphy. Also made me wonder what Omar and Co. might have told him or ‘implied’ to get him to sign here. Did they tell him he had a good shot at that?

    1. GravediggerHebner

IMO all Jacobs had to do to choose to come here is to do what so many people do (and what Case does below in comment # 8) which is associate 1B with some sort of prototype performance.

If one views the 1B position as having to be manned by a guy who hits a prolific amount of home runs and drives in a prolific amount of runs then one thinks Jacobs might be able to do that (since he has done it, once) and that therefore he fits.

  8. CaseStreet

You know, I really want to see what Jake brings to ST. I like Murph and think his style of hitting (gap power) is more condusive to Citi, however I don’t think we should totally dismiss what Jacobs brings to the table. He’s certainly more your prototypical 1B in the Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder mode.

Assuming Jacobs wins the 1B spot, I’d make sure Murph is our LH Tatis. Doubt he’d be of much value via trade, so might as well build him up in a way that he can support the team.

    1. wannybackstra

I don’t see how you consider Jacobs to be of the same prototype as Fielder and Dunn (who has never been a full-time 1B). The other guys are extremely patient hitters. Jacobs is just a hacker. All they have in common is that they hit homeruns.

Anyway, Murphy could fit into 1B if you view the prototype to be more like Hernandez, Grace, Clark, Joyner and the pre-roid era guys.

      1. vcmetsfan28

jacobs strikes out WAAAAAAAAAAAY to much for me.

i like Murphy for his gap power, work ethic, and gamer mentality. plus his knack for big hits. we all remember the lead off triple vs the cubs in 2008…

i would take 280 15 hr 80-90 rbis if those hr’s and rbi’s where in big spots.

guys like dunn have a ton of power but never get big hits. i remember hearing a stat that dunn went over a season and a half without a sac fly. that is just disgraceful.

        1. wannybackstra

In 2004, Dunn had a pretty big year: 266 .388 .569 . But in 681 plate appearances he did not have one sac fly. That explains how he hit 46 HRs and had only 102 RBI. He struck out 195x.

He’s never ha dmore than 5 sac flies in a season.

Murphy had 6 last season and 4 sacrifice hits.

By contrast, Fielder had 9 last year and 10 the year before.

          1. vcmetsfan28

i hate to use the word bum for a guy who hits 40 home runs but adam dunn is a bum. 0 sac flys in 681 plate appearances is pathetic for a 4 hitter…

thanks for finding the stats i knew it was a ridiculous amount.

and the names murphy, and dunn, should never be in the same sentence with fielder unless the sentence is:
the names murphy, and dunn, should never be in the same sentence as fielder.

          2. gategem

(sarcasm)Now lets see in 2004 he had 104 rbi’s but not one sacrifice fly and, of course, no important hits. His ops of .956 was misleading because he never got the big hit. All those rbi’s occurred in games his team had at least a ten run lead and thus were superfluous. Yes he is a bum. (/sarcasm)

  9. Mr North Jersey

Off Topic but is anyone running to do live chats with David Lennon?

    1. metsfan4decades

No, ’cause don’t you have to be a subscriber to Newsday to follow?

Listening to WFAN and MF – why, I don’t know b/c MF makes me crazy.
      Two things:

      - yesterday he said he wasn’t talking about baseball this week b/c they’ll be doing much baseball next week being down at ST. Needless to say, he’s been talking non stop since he came on about the Yankees.
      - How many times in 10 minutes do you think MF can say ‘Jeter is a special case’ regarding if the Yankees will pay him what he wants to remain a Yankee?

      1. Mr North Jersey

        lol

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Oh he likes Inge a lot….

          1. metsfan4decades

LOL – I’ve come to the conclusion that if MF never repeated himself on a particular subject in the same 15 minutes, his show could be reduced to 3 hours….

At least MF is admitting no other team is going to pay Jeter millions and millions of $$ for a 35 year old SS. He’s only worth that to the Yankees.

‘It’s not an issue. He’s going nowhere. They will not make him negotiate. He’s going nowhere. His first offer will be very, very good – they’ll over pay him. He’s going nowhere. It’s a marriage. He’s going nowhere.

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

            And….. he likes Inge a lot….

I agree I just stopped even clicking on anything Newsday once it became apparent that I couldn’t read it. Too bad because I like David Lennon’s work. At least I still have Costa and Rubin (I never had the Post guys and I never will).

        1. saltygary

Now that’s a name, maybe I can convince my wife to call me that as well.

It’s a shame, Newsday had some decent reporting, Daily News can have some decent stuff now and then. The Post is crap, can’t do it.

  10. Mr North Jersey

Off Topic Francessa says Yankee sources told him Jeter will get whatever it takes to make him happy once his contract is over. It is the biggest non issue.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      Phew I was getting worried.

    2. ceetar

Sure it doesntt get reported this way, but jeters statements made it sound as ifvthere is a scenario where he’d go to anothervteam

    3. GravediggerHebner

I truly do believe it is the biggest non-issue – to the Yankees and to Jeter. To 29 other baseball teams it is precisely the biggest issue because not one of those teams would remotely consider signing a 36 year old shortstop with his offensive and defensive production/abilities to the absurd type of contract (4 years, $100 million) that is being casually tossed around for Jeter.

      1. gategem

That is the advantage of being a big market team that is a constant winner and has an outstanding business front office.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Sort of like the slogan “an Army of one.”

I definitely give you credit for using the word “advantage” properly. But I’m not sure I agree with the concept of the Yankees having an “outstanding business front office” although to be fair I don’t know exactly what that means.

I think they have the advantage of the legacy and history of the franchise working for them, something no one else has and something this current “business front office” had nothing to do with. Their merchandise sells nationally and internationally so much more than any other, and they’ve won so many more championships than any other not even including the last 2 decades that I just can’t give this current front office the credit you are willing to.

  13. DNDJohan aka kistics

One thing that might swing things to Jacobs is the fact that Jerry wants his option picked up next year. So, he may choose to go with the more experienced/more HR type of guy than somewhat unproven Murphy. Otherwise, I just don’t see how Murphy doesn’t win the job.

    1. trs86

Hmmm, but Murphy is his guy. LOL>

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Both Jerry and Omar’s jobs are online this year (although Omar will probably survive 1-2 years regardless), so would that hinge some of the decision makings this season? I don’t think you can discount that, but if the Mets are winning regardless who’s playing, I’ll be happy.

          5. GravediggerHebner

Well I signed up because being naked I have to constantly type things to keep warm. Oh wait, you didn’t say “nudies.” Nevermind.

          6. ceetar

I always find typing makes my fingers colder. I think it’s because when you type you separate your fingers, whereas when you’re not they’re touching and keep the body heat in.

I’d recommend investing in a Mets garter though.

          7. njstuckintx

Go with the home colors though!

          8. Mr North Jersey

Now that you say that I recently had my pinkie go numb from sitting with my hand in the same position too long as I typed. Started changing my arm position and it seems to be working. It was weird it was like my pinkie fell asleep but didn’t want to wake up.

          9. trs86

Hey I actually separated my shoulder typing on here one day.

          10. trs86

That one was tough because every time I would complain about it my wife would give me that look.

          11. Mr North Jersey

I’m sure that GartersbyKristi site website had a lot more hits than usual yesterday.

  15. GravediggerHebner

If it was one of you guys that tweeted Brian Costa to ask about the 40 man roster situation thank you. I saw his response (he doesn’t know/hasn’t been announced yet).

  16. DNDJohan aka kistics

Looks like MF is comparing last year’s Yankees team against all the great WS winning teams. Some dude called and mentioned ’08 Phillies saying “There’re 3 future Hall of Famers!”.

    uhhh.. WHAT????

IF Utley and Howard keeps this up for another 7-10 years, they should in HOF. I wonder who the 3rd guy is…

    1. vcmetsfan28

utley will be the only HOF on that team.. when all said and done I don’t think Howard will have the numbers to get in. I can’t see him keeping this up for 7-10 more years. Howards biggest problem was he came out so late (27) i believe.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

You are probably right on Howard. But his numbers on HRs and RBIs are inline with Pujols, so I am not be surprised to see Philly Phuc fans calling him a future HOF.

        1. vcmetsfan28

it def doesn’t surprise me that philly fans would call him a future HOF his number are ridiculous since he arrived but i just don’t believe he will have the longevity.

If would nice to see his downfall start in 2010…

    2. ceetar

Probably meant Cole Hamels, who I need to call out and berate in a post one of these days.

      1. trs86

Perhaps it’s Jimmy “I can talk the talk” Rollins?

    3. metsfan4decades

I can’t imagine either. Way too early to tell about their WS MVP Hamels.

I’m listening to MF as well. Must be a slow day for him with this latest discussion.

As a Met fan, not only do I want to see the Mets reach post season for obvious reasons, I would love for the Yankees to not make it purely for the entertainment value of listening to MF try and spin that.

The funniest thing in ’08 was the Yankee funeral they were proposing in Aug of ’08. MF refused to give into them not making it.

    4. DNDJohan aka kistics

Another hilarious call. Even MF admitted that it’s one of the most bizarre call.

“Hi Mike, big fan of your show, first time long time. How about the Yankees moving CC to the bullpen and putting Joba in the rotation along with Hughes.”

      1. metsfan4decades

Or the caller that threw the ’99 Mets out there.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Or the caller that is saying that Ruiz vs Posada is a wash….

These Philly Phuc fans are smoking some serious stuff…

          1. Mr North Jersey

Did you see on ESPN today the caller that impersonated Brian Westbrook but was a Howard Stern caller? LoL

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Yeah that was hilarious… can’t believe ESPN would fall for that. That’s not the first time ESPN got pranked.

            http://www.ebaumsworld.com/video/watch/934032/

          3. Mr North Jersey

            LoL that was awesome hehehehehehehehe.

    5. trs86

That’s such an impossible question always subject to bias of that teams fans. Reyes and Wright yeah if they keep up their numbers until they are 38-40 years old. That’s just hard to do. Not many locks in today’s game. Especially now without the magic juice to keep you coming back for more.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I agree. I clearly don’t think Reyes/Wright/Beltran are locks for HOFs. Johan…? I think he still needs to put up 3-4 Cy Young type of numbers.

        1. trs86

Yup, I am not sure that the Mets currently have ANY HOF. Delgado was the closest we had as a sure thing at the time. I still think he should get in.

          1. metsfan4decades

Speaking of Delgado, they gave Barajas his #21.

          2. trs86

Yup, someone tweeting wondering how much Delgado would have to pay for it when he returned in July.

          3. metsfan4decades

Oh, that’s funny – or sad, depending on if you believe this could actually be true.

          4. GravediggerHebner

I like that as a nice indirect way of slamming that door shut.

    6. DNDJohan aka kistics

Can’t listen to this crap anymore…

  17. vcmetsfan28

im sure eveyone here has a twitter, so, can everyone post thier twitter so that if i am not following you i can do so now…

    1. ceetar

I’vegot 3 or 4, but you’ve got the main one. all good.

    2. trs86

      You may already have mine.

    3. metsfan4decades

      I don’t have a twitter account.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Maybe you can just comment about what you would tweet if you had a twitter account 4D. LoL

        1. GravediggerHebner

          Hey that’s my gig!

          Taking my fiber supplement…

        2. metsfan4decades

LOL – I can’t imagine anyone being interested.

I don’t have any accounts any any social networking site. Just a thing with me.
I do check a few sites that have ‘tweets’ rolling on the home page, but never signed up to ‘follow’ anyone. There isn’t enough time in my day to keep up with the baseball blogs I like to read. Don’t know how you guys all keep up with all these others.

  18. GravediggerHebner

    Shout out to Gonzo!

    1. metsfan4decades

      Nice.

To the esteemed authors of this site: thanks to all for starting this blog. A place for those like me that wouldn’t pass the ‘audition’ is just a side benefit.
      Totally addicted from day one.
And to those that have the power to make it happen – I really hope you’ll be bringing back the Real Dirty Dugout for the season.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Gonzowill dude Great Job! Whenever an opinion piece here provokes another blog to examine it more deeply that is great for us.

    3. DNDJohan aka kistics

      Awesome!

    4. saltygary

Uh oh get ready for server overload. Very cool.

  19. metsfan4decades

It’s now 3:15. I could retire if I had a dime now for every time MF has said since he’s started today’s show ‘Jeter is a special case’.

I have to agree with his assessment though on he doesn’t believe that Jeter is a steroid user. He doesn’t think it’s outrageous for those calling up raising the possibility in light of his season last year, but he still does not believe it.

MF saying of Pelfrey/Maine/Perez he believes Pelf will have the best year believing he’s the most likely to repeat consistency on a weekly basis. Says Ollie has concentration issues (no, really?) and doesn’t expect Maine to stay healthy.

Here’s hoping that consistency for Pelf is all good.

On that note, he says he is a one pitch pitcher, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be successful.

    1. ceetar

I believe it of Jeter, but if he’s smart and taking HGH, he’ll stop now. Or maybe he’ll try to milk one more year out if ti before the last contract and then stop.

      The same for Rivera.

  20. Mr North Jersey

LoL was just over at fromwhaticangather.com and I noticed a post that was to
“This post will feature my last five updates to Twitter, which I will be using to let readers know where I am going, what I’m working on, and what to next expect on the blog:”

Had a few negative comments that did not like the tons of posts being made from St Lucie as it was overwhelming to a few now has now removed the comments and closed it so comments can’t be made.

Gee, why am I ot surprised? :-)

It must suck not to have freedom of speech.

    1. saltygary

it’s those actions why I am here. The guy is a baby.

    2. metsfan4decades

I saw that post yesterday – and the few negative comments. I can’t even find that post right now.
He’s never going to get it until the shoe is on the other foot.
Control issues for those not quite comfortable in their own skin.
I’m sure he works very hard, but does he work smart?

And no, I’m not a doctor. But I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

    3. Hazmet

My favorite blurp of the week over there was Baron posting as the last bullet summarizing the day “and Matt Cerrone has arrived in Port St. Lucie”.

Well woopdeedooooooo, stop the presses, call Duaner’s cabby and get matty boy tucked in. Thank god he showed up, how could ST have gone on without him?

I remember when he made his first trip down there and he was so humbled and in awe, and well, like the rest of us fans still outside the ropes. Things have changed and I really wouldn’t care if he just didn’t pretend that he was still this man of the people blog instead of being mainstream media now as far as I’m concerned.

  21. mrose

my god… over at philliesphandom they have a picture of Jayson Werth…. I don’t understand him and his facial hair…

    1. trs86

I don’t know but I would make room for him and his hair in RF next year.

      1. metsfan4decades

LOL – would give me something to do in the off season, entertaining myself reading the reactions on the Philly blogs…

I like beards on guys, if they’re neat. But that hair? Cut a hair cut, dude.
It’s my opinion very few guys look good with long hair. And that’s b/c very few guys are going to spend the amount of time us gals do on daily hair styling.
Most guys have that wash and wear ‘do. Not an attractive option on hair that long – unless you’re Manny and have dreadlocks.

      2. ceetar

if he has a bad year we don’t want him, if a good people are already talking Jason Bay money, and that’s a bit much.

I’m hoping Fernando martinez is ready, or Francoeur suddenly develops into a good player.

    2. Mr North Jersey

Thanks for the heads up Mrose. I was looking at some of the profile shots and I think Gillette should call them about doing some cross promotion.

      1. mrose

        its crazy, lol.
I guess its better than that damn “soul” patch he had

Over two hours this afternoon with MF on the who was better Mays or Mantle controversy.
MF is having nothing of the Mays is better argument.

So glad he wasn’t doing much baseball on his shows this week (says tongue in cheek).
Actually I am glad it’s all baseball this afternoon.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

      He likes Inge a lot…

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL…
And after this afternoon, there is no doubt you can add Jeter and Mantle to that list.

  23. GravediggerHebner

Heyman continues to piss me off by misconstruing.

In his “Jerry Manuel is on the Hot Seat” article today (a fair premise in my opinion) he writes:

“…even with a payroll that will approach $140 million, there are considerable questions…”

Now I am not here to suggest that there aren’t considerable questions. I just question the phrase “approach $140 million.” Because right now according to Cot’s Contracts which has the salaries of 21 of the likely members of the 25 man roster (including new addition Rod Barajas) listed has the total of those salaries as $122,663,096.

4 guys who in my opinion seem likely to round out the roster don’t have salaries listed: Fernando Nieve, Dan Murphy, Jon Niese and Bobby Parnell. Somehow I don’t think their combined salaries will “approach” $17 million. Even if each of those 4 guys gets $1 million each (which they won’t) that would be a team with a payroll a couple hundred thousand under $127 million. That approaches $140 million much the same way Mexico approaches Canada.

Why must you continually, obnoxiously fabricate false statements Jon Heyman?

  24. Mr North Jersey

OFF TOPIC – Anyone ever catch 1,001 Ways To Die on Spike TV?

If you did do you like me have a hard time believing a lot of the stuff they claim to have happened?

The episode about the Nympho that died when a strong wind lifted her tent from the ground flinging her into a house breaking her neck while she was “cough cough” finishing herself off.

Come on seriously??? Spike for men I get it but wow.

At least I learn something watching Manswers. ;-)
