Edgardo Alfonzo Would Like To Retire A Met

The inimitable Marty Noble reports at his MLB.com blog that Edgardo Alfonzo’s agent Peter Greenberg has contacted the Mets regarding a minor league contract for Alfonzo.  According to Noble:  “He’d just like to show he can still play,” Greenberg said. “And he’d like the chance to retire as a Met if it doesn’t work out.”

Honestly…this isn’t the season to fooling around with **** like this.

I love Fonzie – one of my favorite Mets, but this just isn’t the time for playing games with the roster.

He should’ve tried this last year after the ASB when the games barely mattered.

No worries mate as our friends down under would say.

All he has to do is sign a minor league contract. Doesn’t effect the roster. Never plays a game. Gets to retire while on a “Mets” contract, thus retires as a Met.

Either way, I just thought we could use a new post. ;-)

        It’s a fine post Grave!

But certainly the topic can be up for debate. My chosen side is…don’t toy with this crapoli.

        1. GravediggerHebner

Of course the topic can be up for debate.

I just don’t see how a fine ex-Met coming in on a minor league deal to say “I retire” in the uniform of our favorite team “toys with this crapoli.”

        2. GravediggerHebner

I have to go away for a while so to elaborate on my position, the way I see it is there is no way for Alfonzo to make the team, he simply doesn’t fit so even if he comes to camp and hits .450 and fields flawlessly he’s not going to make the club which to me constitutes it ‘not working out’ and therefore he retires a Met.

If you care to elaborate on why you think his coming here is bad please do and I will check in later to read your thoughts because as you correctly note the topic is certainly subject to debate but I need to know more about your side before I consider changing my mind.

          1. prismo

I’m going to pass on the elaboration. It’s 10pm and I’ve been up since 3am. If my post bothers you, you’re welcome to ignore it. ;)

On second though, I have a feeling this will still bother you. And I don’t want to be disrespectful, so here’s a tidbit of my thinking.

This is a business – the goal of the Mets franchise is to win ballgames. The goal is not to be a charity for players well past their prime.

Take the “Alfonzo used to be a Met” out of the equation – would you sign a player like that to any deal? Even a minor league one? No way! He hasn’t been good in several years and is in his mid 30′s. It just doesn’t make any baseball sense.

Every player who was once a Met should be automatically guaranteed a minor league deal if they want to retire as one? That’s absurd in my mind, and no way to run a business or a ballclub.

          4. Mr North Jersey

Wouldn’t you like to see Fonzie again in a Met uniform? If just to say thanks for the memories isn’t it good sense to bring in a fan favorite that really just wants one last hurrah before he hangs em up?

How much is a minor league contract anyway, $100,000.00?

          5. prismo

I understand your perspective, I really do. I can sympathize with the opposing side of the “debate.”

But if I were the Wilpons and Omar, I wouldn’t do it. I just don’t think it makes baseball sense.

          6. trs86

I am not sure but I think those kinds of deals can be negotiated to cost the signing team next to nothing. Thus it has nothing to do with business sense.

          7. trs86

There would obviously have to be a cut off but I think Alfonzo has earned the opportunity to retire as a Met. Those kinds of deals can even be for 1.00.

          8. prismo

That’s not the “kind of deal” Fonzie wants. He said it himself – he’d like to show he can still play. He think he has a shot to make the roster – I bet he really does. But everyone else knows a snowball in he|| has better chances than that.

It would all be a big show, and I’m just not into it. Not when the Mets are in dire need of a big season.

If they had won the WS last season, this would be a great time to pull a stunt like this. But that’s just not the case.

          9. trs86

I am sure that part of the contract would be on a minor league invite which as far as I know has no financial obligation.

I understand your point, but I just don’t see how it would hurt. Unnecessary? Yes. Harmful in the least? No.

          10. prismo

We’ll have to agree to disagree.

As I said, I see the other side of the argument, but not well enough to agree with it.

          11. GravediggerHebner

            Prismo,

thank you very much for elaborating despite the long hours and your initial preference not to, I really do appreciate it.

I couldn’t understand how it could possibly be bad and thanks to you elaborating at least now I can see how it might be so thank you again.

I am out and cannot post, but this is from MLBTR for those who did not notice it:

Joe Beimel has confirmed that he is weighing a contract offer from the New York Mets, according to Troy Renck of the Denver Post. We heard earlier in the week that the Mets would like to add a left-hander like Beimel (or Ron Mahay) to their bullpen at an affordable price ($1MM or less), and it seems they’ve extended an official proposal to Beimel.

“We’ve been talking to them for a good part of the offseason. I am still just being patient, waiting for the right deal,” said Beimel.

A patient approach to free agency is nothing new for Beimel, who waited until March 18th to sign with Washington last spring. The 32-year-old lefty pitched 71 games for the Nationals and Rockies in 2009, compiling an overall 3.58 ERA in 55.1 IP.

  3. Mr North Jersey

You won’t believe this but I am watching Yes and they have a Mets Yankee game from last year where we lose to Burnett at Citi 5-0.

I ask you wtf is this now a Yankee Classic?

    1. GravediggerHebner

Well, the Yankees franchise is a pretty new one and doesn’t have a long history filled with great moments or lots of championships so a 10 strikeout, 1 hit performance by a pitcher who has won more than 13 games just once in his 11 year career qualifies as a “classic.”

      1. Mr North Jersey

        hehehehehhee

What am I supposed to do with that?

LOL, what is this some Phillies board? No wonder no one reads this site. ja, ja, ja.

          3. trs86

On that note, I am headed to bed. LOL.

    2. GravediggerHebner

I wish I had a strong argument against the concept that the Phillies “seem stacked for a 3rd WS run” but I don’t.

The two things in the article I find I can reasonably question are the notion that Placido Polanco is a “big acquisition” and the statement about Schneider being able to help them beat the Mets but the Phillies don’t “have a problem with that.”

I think Polanco is at best a question mark as a 3B, it’s been a long time since he played there. The guy he’s replacing was by many measures a very good defensive player, so I think it remains to be seen if Polanco, who was a fine defensive 2B, can translate that to 3B. Polanco will likely have a higher BA and OBP but probably won’t drive in as many runs or hit as many HR. How they deploy the lineup will figure in how the offensive difference works out, I think the “downgrade” if one can call it that will come defensively. So with a team that scores so many runs will that matter?

The Phillies having no problem beating the Mets thing I’m not sure I get. Clearly they didn’t last year (Mets were 6-12 vs Phi) but that was hardly the Mets in 2009. In 2008 the Mets were 11-7, in 2007 they were 6-12 and in 2006 they were 11-8. So it seems recently at best the head to head series goes back and forth, not that it is one sided in favor of the Phils.

I consider them the favorites to win the division and I believe if the Mets have a shot at the post season it’s going to come through the wild card unless the Phillies experience some actual injury problems and/or if Halladay somehow shows he’s unable to handle a pennant race in a North East rabid fan city which I think is a fair question.

      1. ceetar

Series has actually been pretty even.

I didn’t read the article, only saw the URL and though “yeah, I could see the Phillies finishing third”

  4. trs86

So I got to thinking, what would UZR say about our best infield ever? It did not exist then and it’s hard to tell. One thing to keep in mind is that Alfonzo actually seemed to be more comfortable at 3b than 2B with the Mets.
