Reyes Apparently Cleared to Play; Mets Sign Kiko Calero?

According to the AP, MLB.com, ESPN, and various anonymous amateur doctors across the globe, Jose Reyes, as many cooler heads predicted, is just fine and will be able to play tomorrow.

Jose reiterated what many had said earlier today, that the blood test had nothing to do with his leg injury, and was related to his overall physical.

The team and Jose said that the results of the mysterious test came back OK, and Jose is, for now, healthy.

Stay tuned.

In other news, the Mets have also apparently signed reliever Kiko Calero to a minor league deal.

SNY has reported this, we are told, and despite some injury questions, this is a fantastic gamble. Calero had an excellent year out of the pen for the Marlins last year.

The one clear downside to these stories is that the Nattering Nabobs of Negativity will definitely have to dig a bit deeper to find things to complain about once again.

Reyes is healthy, and it is March and Omar is STILL working hard to improve the team.

The serious fan must be very happy with this news, if it turns out to be true.

This site will soon be referred on other blogs as over there on “NatteringNabobsofNegativity.com”

I can’t count how many times I have read that phrase this year.

    1. Kingman 26

I introduced that phrase when we were at FromWhatICanGather.com, and Grave was the first to correctly know where it came from.

Perhaps the contribution I am most proud of here is introducing that absolutely perfect phrase into the dialogue.

      You are welcome.

      1. fongy2

Didn’t want to be a know it all BUT as a political junkie, I knew where it came from!

        Just sayin’…..

        1. Kingman 26

Oh, I am very sure you do buddy—I just remember the very first time I used it a couple of years ago, I don’t think you were there at the time, and Grave was the first to correctly identify it….OK, do you know who first said it AND who WROTE it for the lying criminal who said it?

          1. fongy2

I believe it was Agnew in describing the press coverage
            on him and Nixon.
            Don’t know who wrote it?
            Buchannon? Maybe?
I know he was one of their top speech writers.

          2. Kingman 26

Totally correct on the first part, and SO close on the other—it was one of Buchanan’s colleagues, William Safire!

That press office also had at times Charles Colson, Diane Sawyer, John McLaughlin—pretty impressive group!

As we both are about 43 years old (right?) and were little kids then, I guess that most definitely makes us political junkies!

          3. fongy2

            Close, I’m 44, 45
            in August.
No doubt on the 2nd part!
When not out playing as an 8,9 y/o, I spent ALOT
of time in my Grandparents Bar
            in Harlem watching
            TV,reading all the
            newspapers and shooting Pool….
This while, my Grandmother was “Babysitting” us.
            Diff world my friend!

          4. fongy2

            Now our Presidents
            have the likes of
            Dee Dee Meyers,
            Scott McClellan And
            Bob Gibbs!

            Is there any doubt
            ,men like Washington,Jefferson
and Lincoln spin in their graves???

          5. Kingman 26

At this point Fong, I seriously think even JFK and Nixon spin in their graves at the garbage we have to choose from on BOTH sides!

          6. fongy2

Well I’m not so sure about
            Nixon :)
            I think w/him
            maybe more like”…And I
            was forced out?”
And not to be too political BUT
            w/JFK”Hey,wait!…which part was I a Member of?”

  2. njstuckintx

As a minor league deal, I can’t see this as anything but a very nice signing. Sprikle in some Biemel and we’re talking a very decent pen with depth in the minors.

    1. Kingman 26

      Correctamundo!

      A potentially excellent pen.

    2. fongy2

This could/should be aVERY GOOD signing!
      And I agree about Beimel.
It’s about time some healthy arms who have gotten outs late in MLB games were signed by Omar to try and set-up KRod. Whats the point in having him if you can’t get to him w/ a lead??

  3. fongy2

Brock, I dont know if you had a chance but a few days ago MLB network replayed the entire Cubs-Phils 23-22 game.
Very interesting! Alot of Met connections and history in that
    one.

    1. Kingman 26

I missed it, but if I remember correctly, Kingman and Schmidt both hit 3 HR in that insane game!

      1. fongy2

Yeah i thought so too! BUT Schmidt only hit 2.
I remember that game only from the extensive highlights show on WPIX by Jerry Girard that
night and from studying the boxscore the next day.

BUT man, to watch it! And Met history, Kingman,Unser,Foote,Bowa,Burris,Vail,Jerry Martin,
        Buckner, Donnie Moore,McCarver,Tug,Nino Espinosa,
Pete Rose….To see the late Bobby Murcer…
Willie Hernandez yrs before his CyYoung/MVP
        yr w/the Tigers….AND…My wife’s old classmate
Garry Maddox who was 4for4 w/a single,2 doubles and a HR before being lifted in the 5th,hurting himself sliding into 2B.
        Wild, wild game!

        1. GravediggerHebner

3/4 of the earth is covered by water and the other 1/4 is covered by…

          1. fongy2

            Indeed!

He was my Wife’s class mate @
            Temple for a couple yrs.
Very good guy she says….But she
            thinks the same about me…So….

          2. Kingman 26

Garry Maddox, said by Kiner if I am not mistaken!

          3. fongy2

Actually, I think it was Dallas Green, later relayed
to us Met fans by Ralphie.

            I could be wrong though.

          4. GravediggerHebner

I don’t know the answer to where it originated from I just know I always heard Kiner say it every time the Mets and Phils played and it’s become part of my lexicon much the same way as “gone, goodbye” has.

  4. metsfan4decades

Ike Davis with a Grand Slam – ‘hit one to Mars’, says Kevin. Back of the picnic area.

    Mets 17 Cards 10

  5. metsfan4decades

    Game over 17-11
3 hrs – Wright, GMJ, and the grand slam by Davis
    Omir went 3 for 3
    Bay 0 for 2 and a walk.

And uh….Sean Green? He’s awful. I didn’t like him last year, I’m not seeing much improvement yet this year….

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Good for Ike. Does Green have a guaranteed spot on the bullpen?

      1. fongy2

        Hopefully in The Pirates BullPen!

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

          no… Phillies Bullpen!

  6. wannybackstra

I like the Calero signing and have been hoping for him from the beginning of the FA period. He’s a good solid BP arm when healthy, who can get guys out from both sides of the plate. Last year he held lefties to .187 .347 .240.

    1. wannybackstra

I was in favor of signing Calero in addition to the current group of relievers but my sense is that the Mets would not have signed him if things were not looking bad for Escobar.

      1. fongy2

Agreed Wanny! I thought from the start, this
Escobar signing was to simply have someone
take the “Duque Memorial spot” on the DL for
the season. Hadn’t really pitched in 2 yrs AND
hadn’t relieved in 8. THAT was gonna be our
        8th inning guy???
And for THAT cost, why not Dotel???

        1. wannybackstra

I wouldn’t conclude that Escobar can not be successful but I too am glad that they are hedging their bet.

  7. stickguy

I think escobar never was really being counted on. They hoped he would, but probably never intended to not have a fall back.

Right now, I am starting to like the potential. After K rod, they could have have icky (whatever the japanese guy is called, I will be calling him Icky for now!), Neive (if Neise wins the 5th spot), and Calero. That is 3 live RH arms, and some real K potential.

Feliciano + the mythical 2nd lefty (beimel? Probably someone on hand already, lick Misch)

That leaves 1 spot. Green seems like an odd man out, unless they want a severe ROOGy specialist. Parnell too, unless they think he can be a long man? I think the long man is what they need (and spot starter?), although Neive or Misch can serve that role. everts is still around too, looking to impress.

Obviously a lot of ST to go, and guys can bomb or get hurt, but right now, there are enough real contenders to make it look like a problem keeping them all, instead of scrambling to find more!

And if green, everts and Parnell (and maybe more) can be stashed in AAA, even better.

  8. CaseStreet

Nice. Just please no more conspiracy theories.

    When’s Beimel signing?

    Who gets the last spot?

Let’s not break Figgy’s heart, he’d be a decent long man and his family will probably buy a bunch of tix too.

    1. Kingman 26

      LOL!

Figgy has zero chance of making this team.

I am so sorry Case, first Tex and now Figgy!

    2. CaseStreet

      I’m just messin, I don’t really care.

      1. Kingman 26

I know, me too….I do honestly like Figgy, and I could see him being a seriously good pitching coach one day.

        1. CaseStreet
