TRDMB: Tale Of The Tape – Murphy/Davis

Before you even ask, yes Murphy will most likely be the opening day 1st baseman and yes Ike Davis has a slim to none shot of making the club. So the following is for entertainment purposes for the what if contingent out there. Every so often I’ll try and post an updated one.

    No love for Jake?

Thank god we’re not talking about Delgado, may he play in peace and reach 500 HR.

I agree that Davis isn’t making the opening day roster – baring injuries.
Obviously, his bat is looking good so far but I’m a bit surprised at his defense. Still, it’s early yet.

He sure is making lots of people stand up and take notice though. I’d be real happy if he turns out to be our above average defensive, power bat 1st baseman of the future.

I am starting to rethink the Davis has no chance at winning the job idea.

Especially if he shows he can hit lefties, which seems to be the area of concern.

But mostly, it isn’t like Murphy is really entrenched.

So, what really is the breaking point where Davis gets it?

I normally believe that a proven veteran shouldn’t lose a job in ST. So even if bay goes 2-30 in ST, he won’t be benched for F mart no matter what he does.

But Murphy? the antitheses of entrenched!

Was just thinking that the Mets have a abnormally high % of LH hitting prospects. Pretty much all of the top hitting prospects are lefties (maybe not so bad, since the team other wise is RH dominant right now?)

Thole, Davis, F Mart, Havens and Kirk N. are probably the top 5, all lefties. At least based on talent and closeness to the majors. And of course Murphy. Not sure about Tejada.

The RH guys seem to be lower down (like Flores).

If this crew did soemhow become a home-grown team in 2012, you could end up with 2 RH, 1 switch, and 5 lefties!

I know they won’t all end up playing for the Mets, or at the same time. Just another random thought.

But after seeing Davis and Thole (and the respective incumbents) it would not surprise me to see them both starting by next year. And by 2012, CF and 2B will be open (assuming Beltran is done as scheduled), and F Mart should be kicking around the OF someplace, and I have a man crush on Kirk icantspellhislastname. Maybe both if Frenchy has moved on by then.

And of course, 2B wil lbe new (thank Havens!) <<- that was a pun. Not a typo. Get it?

    This from Ed Coleman:

‘Jose Reyes was scratched from the lineup this morning, leading to some consternation and a little panic mixed in as well. Reyes went to the doctor to have some further blood work done around 8 AM, then had to return around noon. He was cleared to play later in the afternoon, came back to camp and took some batting practice, and is in the lineup for Friday’s split-squad games. It seems that when the levels are off in any category with the blood work, the player has to be re-tested (Mike Pelfrey went through the same thing on Tuesday). Reyes’ hamstring is fine, and he’s anxious to go.’

Sounds like this was all to do about basically nothing. Especially since it’s now reported Mike Pelfrey had the same scenario. If that were you and I getting routine blood work and it came back off, the only way we’d probably get a retest is if we asked for it ourselves. And I don’t know about you, but that’s b/c I’m not some multi million dollar investment for my employers….

Never really concerned that it meant anything. Just thought the timing gave the appearance of miscommunication.

probably trying to keep Jerry as far out of the loop and away from the players as possible to give him less chance of screwing things up!

And yes, I am not a member of the Jerry fan club.

Hey, I admitted I was silly about Matthews Jr….even the boss can admit likewise!

        :-)

someone on MLBTR seems to have debunked the theory that the Reds were interested.

But, with a good spring, I still think some team short of experienced OFs could take a shot at him. And if Pagan cements himself into the job, and someone like Pridie seems to be good enough to be the 5th OF and play good D in CF, then please Omar, sell high on GM jr.!

As of now, it seems that Omar turned 1.5mill + stokes into GMjr. and Kiko Calero. Overall, I think that is a pretty good trade for the Mets. And if he can turn GM into a prospect + 1.5mill in savings, a tremendous deal Howie!

It was a story from Buster Olney.

There is zero doubt left that Olney is a liar, and literally makes things up.

This, and his Torrealba story, were both clearly 100% false and probably made up by him.

          2. trs86

            Buster’s Follies?

        2. trs86

Sorry, I got nothing to admit on this one. You know I admit when I am wrong freely. Just not wrong here. LOL.

Just another example of information overload, and how immediate items get reported.

In more normal times, before the initial report even happened it would have been resolved as a big nothing (and not even reported at all most likely).

I liked it better when the “press” figured out what the story was before reporting it. now they though out a tweet with a half baked rumor/question, and then work backwards to figure out if it was a false alarm.

      1. ceetar

It draws in readers. It’s almost like they jumped on it knowing if they made a lot of it and then ‘reassured’ us that it was just basic they’d have a morning column, and then an afternoon column with the results. bleh.

          circle gets the square.

In the end much do about nothing.

Unless we hear differently this ws a simple

Dr.: Hello we got some results in and we’d like Reyes to come down this morning for more blood work.

Mets: OK thank you for calling.

Mets: Call Reyes and his mgr tell them he needs more blood work.

Reyes: OK Papi I go get blood work no problem.

Manuel: HA HA HA HA I guess once I scratch him the media and fans will go crazy speculating from HGH to Communication issues.

          Much ado about nothing.

          1. Kingman 26

            Totally correct, and thank you.

Much ado about LESS than nothing.

    3. Kingman 26

      Correctamundo MF4D and Stick.

The very best example of something which means absolutely less than nothing becoming a story, which it most definitely was not.

      1. stickguy

Makes you wonder how we all survived as fans when you had to wait for the paper (the next day!) or the evening news to find out what happened, and even then, much of what went on never got reported.

Unless you were a rich kid and could afford to call Sportsphone without getting smacked by your father when the bill came (King Wally, BaBy!)

Ha! I remember those days well.

I have to give kudos to Amazin Avenue for allowing a free download of their recently published AmazinAvenueAnnual. I just dowloaded this 340 page Annual and am perusing it now.

    1. stickguy

sounds like your employer won’t be getting their milti-million $$ worth today either….

      1. ceetar

I downloaded it at home. Anyone want to give a quirk “what’s worth reading” bit? Because I doubt I get that indepth with something that big.

        1. metsfan4decades

I like that they included analysis and contributions from those like Greg Prince & Jason Frye as well as the minor league guy Toby Hyde.

I see they have a chapter on MC and Mets blogs. That ought to be interesting….

      2. metsfan4decades

        I multi task well.

Actually, there’s no way I get through this today. Checking out the pictures and Table of Contents now. It’ll make a good read for one night this weekend….
