If you think this is going to be another “Reyes will be O.K” article…you are completely correct. I’m not going to panic over this issue with Reyes and neither should our TRDMB readers.
Watching Reyes over the past month working out shows me that he is in great shape and as an athlete myself, one or two weeks off, won’t affect anything. In fact, this may benefit Reyes as it gives him time to recover and rest. We’ve all seen the inside of hell with the 2009 season, could a thyroid scare us? I don’t think so. I look at it this way, just imagine if Reyes pulled his calf or ripped his rehabbed hamstring. So far, I think this Spring Training has shown a lot of positives and to me, that’s what we should be talking about.
And lets discuss these positives. Two words that might make every Met fan smile, Ike Davis. Our own David Wright is showing some power;  Oliver Perez who seems focused and motivated.  If you told me Jon Niese would be pitching this well now, I would have lost a bet….I’m surprised he can walk normal after his injury. Santana is throwing without any discomfort and is on pace to pitch Opening Day.  Does Mejia impress you as he does me? Even Pagan ran the bases well yesterday.  And let’s not forget that even Omar Minaya  is getting in on the act as he is still trying to improve this club on an almost daily basis.
It is very easy (just watch any New York Television Station) to fall into the ”here we go again” routine when it comes down to the Mets, but I’ll tell you now, this Reyes thing will be just fine.Â
Let’s not sweat the small stuff and let’s not push the panic button.

100% in agreement. So long as there is nothing cancerous involved this should be no big deal. Jose should be back on the diamond by St. Paddy’s day to get a couple of weeks in before the season and that’s all that matter’s from a baseball side of this story. Life wise, good luck Jose with the NY visit, hopefully it is what then think and move on, it’ll be OK.
As for the NY media. Oy. I love when they make statement about the state of the Mets fans and our psyche. It’s usually 180 degree’s out of phase with what most Mets fan I speak with think. Then again if there basing it on the 10-17% fan confidence rating at some other site I guess that could be the basis.

I agree, there are a lot of positives, and no one is looking bad, if you even could this early in Spring. I just don’t like Reyes not being in Port St. Lucie. Everything should be fine, but it’s the waiting that kills me.
I don’t think any of these guys are or should make the team, but having Meija and Davis look almost ready strongly increases depth. It’s an attitude thing. Imagine if this was last year, and when people got hurt we got Meija and Davis and Thole? It’d almost be seen as an ‘okay, let’s see what we’ve got’ then a “woe is me” type attitude. Well then, hopefully no one gets injured, but as much as I like Murphy and Francoeur and even Barajas, having Thole, Davis and Martinez hovering over their shoulders is exciting. and the rotation? sure, I wanted a guy like Garland, but if we added depth by both Niese and Meija being possibly ready? Parnell may be the odd man out of the bullpen, we’ve got a lot of possibilities.

I know I’ve ripped MC a bit over here, but under the credit where credit’s due there’s a great spot on Beltran working with Pagan over there.
Another reason why I heart Carlos. This is reminescent of his first year here when one of the first things he did was grab Reyes and Wright and said come work out with me. For my money the guy is just so valuable beside’s what he does on the field.

Yeah. I saw him tweet that yesterday. Honestly, that should be the front page today and the highlight of the Mets story this weekend.

comment from Pagan:

That says it all.
Can’t wait until Beltran is back, healthy and patrolling center field – (nothing against Pagan).

Weeelllll, I guess Carlos probably didn’t think he had to inform Angel it’s not a good idea to make the first or last out at third. Unbelievable. How much Angel? how much Jerry fundy’s? Was the third base coach waving him? Or was he oblivious?
I heard this in the car while waiting for the Mrs doing Outlet shopping and I was surprised how much this really irked me. I could tolerate this from F-Mart at this stage in his development, but Angel, dude, you’ve been around awhile. wtf. The way F-Mart’s hitting, if he keeps it up, take a seat Angel and hello future.

Not worrying about Reyes at all.
I also think that the relatively small % of fans that actually post (some constantly) on the various blogs get a disproportionate amount of attention. And they aren’t likely a statistically accurate sample of the overall mood of the fanbase.
If anything, the majority of fans probably don’t pay that much attention to the off season (other than reading the names coming in), and really only start focusing on the team as ST gets into full swing, and the season gets close.
Then, they look at the roster and all the talent, and get excited for another season to start.
They also, of course, aren’t voting over that MC’s place!
If they can maintain this relative level of good health and apparent conditioning, this is a very talented and potentially very good team.
If any of the pundits predicting 77 wins would like to bet, I will be happy to take all the “over” action I can get!

There are “levels” of fans for sure.
There are the diehard, read everything, write everything, know the spring roster invitees, Know who Issac Davis is, etc.
There is the next level that are pretty die hard, but don’t put a lot of time in learning the fringe stuff or analyzing , but still listen to WFAN, check Metsblog, etc.
The next level is probably the fans that read the papers, hear the news, but basically don’t pay attention until the season starts and then they know things like “Daniel Murphy is having a good year”, but don’t know that Ike Davis is having a better one in the minors, beyond what Gary Keith and Ron talk about.
Their are fans that are just fans, turn on many games, maybe go out to the park occasionally, will step it up during the playoffs but don’t get overly emotionally involved (I feel like most Yankees fans seem to fall into this category, if not most fans in general)
and on and on..
But it’s only the first two groups that really vote and voice their opinions. the vocal minority. And things like the color of walls, the 8th inning song, and renewing tickets are not quite as widespread as it would seem.
Well, the general over under numbers looks like it’s going to be low 80s. I don’t see how this isn’t a layup over.

Well, those who know me know where I stand on this.
Will, thanks for this piece and for bringing some very needed sanity to the Met world.
Reyes’ situation is disturbing, but barring a VERY unlikely ultimate result, he should be swinging away from the 3 hole on opening day.
I love the team, I love that Omar is still working on fixing the 2008 bullpen, I love the Calero signing, I love how Mejia looked, I love Davis’ bat speed, I love that Pagan is asking Beltran how to best count the outs each inning, I love how Wright and Johan look, and damn the Nabobs, I even still love the idea of Ollie and Pelf and Maine STILL maybe becoming at least 2 arms of a really good rotation for years to come.
Have a great day everyone, and thanks for this piece!

And you know what will be very telling on this being a successful season? Us all saying by June – “I love Jerry” – hahahahaha – what are the odds of that?
I’m willing to give him one more shot. He’s got a relatively healthy, very talented team. Let’s see where he takes them. This team and it’s talent can win in spite of the limitations of the manager. But how much further could they go with a very smart baseball manager?
