Me too. I saw the discussion last night about not rushing prospects and I agree with that for the Ike, Mejia, Thole class and as a general rule. But by now Martinez was supposed to be to Beltran’s right with Milledge on the other side as per the end of 2006 plan. F-Mart’s the acception to the prospect rule this year, in part for me, based on that regardless of the number of at bats he had in the minor’s. If keep’s tearing it up in spring I don’t see how this is not a consideration. If he does, it’s time to find out about F-Mart in the bigs since AAA won’t be enough of a test. And the test would be for 30-45 days before Beltran’s back. If Carlos doesn’t return in that time then it’s even more important to find out now.
I am generally pretty open minded and inclusive, but anyone that votes for GMjr. should be banned from this, and every other, intelligent BB blog. ANd made to be a Yankee fan.
F Mart? Different story. He did have his cup of coffee last year to break the ice, so if he does come up, he won’t be quite the wide eyed newbie. He should also understand the MLs are a lot harder than he probably expected them to be.
He does have a lot of years, if not a huge number of ABs, in the MiLs.
So, I suppose the scenerio could play out where he sticks, but I don’t expect it to (barring, god forbid, more injuries).
I do not think (unlike hazmet), that sending him to AAA won’t be worthwhile. It will give him a couple hundred ABs to really get locked in and strong. Probably won’t make a huge difference where they come though.
what I don’t want to see is him in NY riding the bench as a spare part. If he is here, he needs to play.
I can see it working out that, if he dominates all spring and wins the job until Beltran comes back, if he hits well enough in April to deserve to stay up, once CB is back they can platoon F Mart and Frenchy in RF (since Frenchy is worthless against RH pitching). That makes F Mart preacically a FT starter, and he can also give Beltran and Bay rest.
I don’t expect it to work out this way, ut I could see it happening.
Making a choice between Pagan and Matthews has everything to do with having intelligence, and being able to determine which of these guys might do better, based on past performance.
Personally, I would prefer neither. Pagan showed already, by getting thrown out at third, that his instincts remain those of a moron, not a starter.
I want neither really.
The only drawback with FMart is that assuming Beltran comes back healthy maybe in May, if FMart is doing well, what happens? A RF platoon, which will surely not make anyone happy?
How about having Pagan start the year in CF to see if he can hit well and have his trade value rise, then flip him for a part we could use (pitcher maybe?) and slot FMart in there?
couldn’t Francoeur be that guy instead? Pagan makes a beter 4th outfielder, and Frenchy would have more theoretical trade value if he’s hitting, and if he’s not, well, that really solves the problem as well.
So if someone is a fan for GMJ for whatever reason that you can think of and would like to have him start instead of Pagan they “should be banned from this, and every other, intelligent BB blog. ANd made to be a Yankee fan”?
A fan is believing in a player or a team because you enjoy watching them even when the numbers indicate your crazy to do so.
I have no love for GMJ you are correct that based on who will be the better center fielder Pagan has the edge but if someone said to me “Hey I am a big GMJ Fan and I hope he has a chance to redeem himself and become the starting center fielder” how is that grounds for being exiled to Yankee Land?
I understand no one really cares about this. I have this knee-jerk need to reply when I see someone try to banish people to Yankeeland just because they like a player more than another.

I wasn’t actually serious.
You beeter up north seem to be overly stressed. Much calmer down in SJ!
All things considered, I’d start with Pagan.
I’ve been reading where they’re saying FMart is filling out – must be a late bloomer – and they don’t think he’s going to be suited anymore to CF, more like corner OF. Not sure if that’s idle speculation though or serious analysis…..
He only turned 21 last October so he is still growing into his frame. At 47 sad to say, I’ve grown well outside my frame. Regarding his ultimate OF spot I think your on the money long term. I’ll just be happy to have that be determined at the MLB level over the coming years.
If GMJ is outplaying Pagan and does well leading off (stop trying to hit HRs), then I vote for GMJ.
Why? Because if GMJ plays well through May when Beltran is supposed to return, we can ship him and his tiny salary for someone we can use.
Why not keep GMJ and trade Pagan or Frenchy? Because Frenchy gets paid $5M and Pagan $1.5M, while GMJ only $2M/2 years (Angles pay the rest).
We need Pagan as the 4th OFer. F-Mart will be starting RF next year. No way he gets traded.
I say play GMJ if he’s hot, and trade him mid-season. Play Frenchy in RF and trade him in the off-season. Then F-Mart starts in RF next year and Pagan is the 4th OFer.
I just don’t see how GMJ or Frenchy are part of the team next year, other than F-Mart getting injured. Might as well let their stock rise so we can get something of value in return.
I do see logic in that. I like Francoeur..but, who knows, he’s probably not that good a baseball player. But yeah, your scenario is what works out the easiest.

Is there anyone that wants to see GMJ? I’m starting to want Fernando Martinez.

Yea in agreement with above. I wanted to see FMART go right to AAA, but if the kid is hitting then you gotta let him in.

I vote for GMJ.
Ban me.
Sometimes I wonder if people understand that being a fan has nothing to do with intelligence.

And in full Ollie form, he walks the first batter – although Ronnie thought he got robbed and that 3rd ball should have been strike 3.

Makes a good 2-2 pitch and doesn’t get the call. misses by a mile next one and walks him.
Now 0-2 on the next guy and Santos fails to throw a guy out.
