What Does The Mets & Neil Armstrong Have In Common?

neil_armstrong_mets

“That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.” -Neil Armstrong

What does this statement have to do with anything Mets?

Well you can argue that if the Mets press release yesterday did not omit one word it would of changed the controversy that the Mets are still having communication issues. Here is what the Mets should of said.

“Test results today on Jose Reyes have confirmed that Jose has an [mild] overactive thyroid.”

Had they thrown in the word mild then Reyes statements and his agents would corroborate one another.

Here is what Reyes agent Peter E. Greenberg said in an article by David Waldstein of The NY Times.
“We’re waiting for the final results tomorrow,” Greenberg said from Arizona, “but all indications are that it’s the most minimal case of hyperthyroidism possible. The doctor was very pleased and so is Jose.”

Even Reyes agent is not saying there was no Thyroid problem but rather the most minimal case of hyperthyroidism possible.

The article goes on to say that “Unless the condition changes significantly, he could be cleared to play within days.”

Now Greenberg saying what he did doesn’t mean he too has a communication issue with his client Jose Reyes. When Reyes said  in the ESPN Deportes interview “The specialists who took care of me in New York have told me that I’m fine and that there’s nothing wrong with my thyroid“.

Reyes may in fact be fine now since  the time of his initial blood work. Waldstein’s article says  “Initial tests did not determine the cause of the condition, Greenberg said, but it could be the result of a virus, or perhaps a change in Reyes’s diet. Greenberg said Reyes had recently been eating a lot of seafood, especially shellfish, and the extra iodine might have contributed to the imbalance in his thyroid levels.

What is most important is that it looks like Reyes will be just fine and unless a 3rd scenario drops to totally drive a monkey wrench into all of this. Reyes should  hopefully be back in camp soon getting ready for Opening day.

So Jose Reyes is an astronaut? ;-)

I think Jose spoke the truth, and probably that is what the Dr. told him.

something like, your thyroid looks fine, but the level is slightly elevated, but nothing to worry about and easily fixable.

Besides, in medicine, levels are somewhat arbitrary as to what is OK, bad, and a concern. Not like a bone that is broken or not!

So, if “normal range” is 1-1.9, and “elevated is “2-2.9″ and “danger” is 3+”, what does that mean if your reading is 2 on the nose? Other than the fact that someone decided to make the cut off there. But if the range was 1.1-2.0, then suddenly you are fine?

Does Minaya want to make things worse?

    http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/2010/03/minaya-reyes-thyroid-definitel.html

Minaya said he couldn’t explain the comment from Reyes.

“You’ll have to ask him that,” Minaya said. “But I can tell you I had a conversation with our doctors, I had a conversation with their representative and we’re all in agreement that he has elevated thyroid levels. … Like I said, I can’t answer for Jose. I do know that we had a conversation because I understand there was something said. But when we both left the conversation with the doctor and his representative, we were in agreement.”

Experts in hyperthyroidism uniformly say Reyes’ availability for Opening Day should not be in question. Asked if that’s a correct assessment, Minaya said: “Let’s wait for the results of the tests.”

Minaya said he has not spoken directly with Reyes.

Minaya said he has not spoken directly with Reyes.

This statement really bothers me. You mean to tell me that there was no conference call this morning with the doctors, Omar, and Reyes??

The very first thing I would do if I were Omar is to call Jose and see where he is. To come out and say that “I don’t know what the heck he’s talking about, but I’m not wrong” is not the right thing to say Omar!

As i said below, this is disturbingly the norm. And if you factor in some of the reports out their are translated from Spanish (or reactions to comments translated into Spanish translated into English) it’s a wonder they’re even words at this point.

Omar should have a muzzle put on him. Keep him as GM if they want to, but do not ever, under any circumstances, let him speak to anyone, in public or in private.

That last line says it all:
‘Minaya said he has not spoken directly with Reyes.’

Well gee, did it occur to Omar or the other talking heads maybe someone should be talking to Reyes? If for nothing else to see how he’s doing, if he understands what is being told to him by the doctors, where they go from here? And oh, by the way, get their stories straight???

    4. ceetar

Stubborn. But we know that about Minaya, he’s stubborn and he’s not afraid to back down or take a shot at someone. I think it’s had more benefits that negatives in the past, but we’ll see.

It annoys me that semantics are causing such an uproar about basically good news.

As you said Mr North Jersey, one more word/adjective would change everything, put people would still overreact. Adjectives cannot change the truthiness of a statement.

Mets take a conservative route, say “levels confirmed above normal”, Reyes take the aggressive (surprised?) route and says “sweet, my thyroid ain’t broke.” Truth. It’s not.

      Moving on.

This is an issue across baseball, and it’s part of the reason the Mets, as well as many other teams, have these semantical differences. Agents. Everything becomes a game of telephone. Omar sends a lackey to talk to Reyes’ representative. But it’s reported as “Reyes told Omar”. It’s becoming rarer and rarer for an exec to call a player directly.

    Jay Horowitz strikes again.

    1. Mr North Jersey

Poor JAY a good soldier till the end simply following orders. Yet some would have him be the star of this lunacy of a movie title “Jay and silent Wilpon strikes back”
