I apologize for not posting yesterday but after the Jose Reyes thyroid fallout this past Thursday, I just felt I needed a 24 hour break from everything Mets related. Yes during this hiatus I even managed to stay away from the negativity box that is WFAN placating myself by listening to the soothing sounds of the new Slayer CD entitled ” World Painted Blood” ( I recommend it highly !). So as I was regrouping my thoughts ( and cleaning my high powered rifle ), I had a epiphany. This might be the best thing that could ever happen to the 2010 Mets. Okay so now before you reserve the rubber room for me just hear me out. With both Jose Reyes and Carlos Beltran out for a period of time ( who knows how long before they take the field again), this could be a rallying call for this team, a incident that could quite possibly band this team together. I feel that if Jerry Manuel Would instill a “fight or die”" us against the world ” mantra, this team could find the fire that it has been sorely lacking since game seven of the ’06 NLCS. I believe that Ruben Tejada is the best in house option to hold down the fort until Jose gets back, with Alex Cora serving as backup . From the stats I saw Tejada has a better than adequate bat and is possibly the most defensively sound shortstop other than Reyes in the organization He might not be the human highlight reel like Santana is, but if he is more like Rafael Santana than Ramon Martinez I feel that this team can win. I feel the Mets would be making a big mistake if they traded for a temporary replacement ( remember Mike Bordick).
But to get back to my main argument here, it seems that almost every media outlet is predicting nothing but doom for this organization this year. This team has to channel this negativity – get angry and DOMINATE !!!

” The Mets have to get ANGRY !!!”
And now …. ON WITH THE INFAMY !!!!!
Happy Birthday wishes go out to back up outfielder from the ’66 -’67 campaigns , Al Luplow (1939)
Utility-man for the ’65 team , Gary Kolb is 70 (1940) .
One of the best pitchers the Mets never gave a real chance to , Terry Leach is 56 (1954) .
Former third base coach, Luis Aguayo is 51 (1959) .
Back up catcher for the ’98 team , Jorge Fabregas is 40 (1970) .
Happy 31st birthday to our Ace – Johan Santana (1979)
New York Mets traded reliever Mardie Cornejo to the Detroit Tigers for reliver – and Pride of Flushing – Ed Glynn on March 13, 1979. It is common knowledge that Glynn was once worked for the Mets as a concessionaire when he was a teenager, and he was a decent reliever in his two year tenure as a Met, garnering eight saves and a e.r.a of 3.53
Detroit Tigers claimed infielder , Shane Halter of the New York Mets on waivers on March 13, 2000.
And don’t forget – there are just 23 Doug Flynn days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field !

they will be fine. Or at Least OK until May rolls around.
I could be swayed by Tejada. Although to be fair, I have no idea how good of a SS Russ adams or that Cintron guy are. In any case, I want to see a plus defender out there. Besides, none of the options will replace Reyes’s offense (although so far Adams is making a run at !)
Couple of other reasons to support Tejada
1) I don’t think Cora has the range to play next to slowfeet (apologies to clapton) Castillo, or the ability to play FT for 2+ weeks. He really is a true back up, as in the guy that comes in for a game here or there to give the starter a rest.
2) He is already here. Like the Bordick dig above, if they trade for someone, you lose a prospect. And th FA options are worse than what are already here.
I guess the downside is that downside is putting himn on the 40 man and burning an option, but I don’t think that just be the main deciding facotr (although it makes for a fine tie breaker!)

I don’t think they ought to trade right now for a ‘replacement’ SS. Let’s see what Jose’s final prognosis is. If he makes it back in about a month, we just hold on till he’s back. If it looks like it’s going to be a see-saw like last year, then we should start thinking about a replacement level player – not just a back-up.
Whether we stay in house or do a trade, is a whole different discussion.
My guess is to start the season they’ll go with Cora. Whether they give Tejada Joses’ DH spot, I don’t know. Will they deem SS defense better than carrying an extra bat in the lineup for the duration?

Big problem with this is that there is no prognosis, so it will certainly be a see saw.
Maybe not prognosis, but timing is way too fluid. At least with “standard” BB injuries, you have a basis for making decisions. with this? 1 week? 8 weeks? 4 months? All seem to be in play.
If they go with cora, they better fill the bench spot with a bat (adams?). Because if they want to go with a glove as a defensive replacement guy, might as well have the glove just start, since Cora really can’t hit either.

No need to worry, Reyes will be back…. but if he’s not:
since I’ve refrained from posting my nuclear option for a few days and getting laughed off the site what better opportunity then now to let it loose. Get ready to laugh:
Premise: If A-Rod could move from SS to third, granted he alway’s was a short stop, why don’t we ammuse ourselves and, get ready:
Move Wright from third to short, stick Murphy at third, and Ike at First. or,
Wright to SS, trade Murphy and something to Boston for Lowell and Ike at First.
I know, I know, never in a million years. But I do like to think out of the box, in this case, way out of the box.

I actually like this. Certainly show creative thinking. And they instantly upgrade the offense!
Wright really isn’t that big reltative to a lot of shortstops. Might not be pretty, but I imagine he could do a respectable job, at least as good as Cora.
But you are right, no chance it happens. But it would be fun!
The Murphy at 3rd part might be a bigger problem actually.

Thank you for not laughing me into oblivion.
Agree on the Murph take but I think ultimately he doesn’t fit anywhere longterm at first if Davis develops as expected so ideally the Lowell route is where I’d be trying to land.
And Wright’s range is not terrible and certainly I’d think better then Cora. Only concern I’d have is the throwing. But in some camps he already has that at 3b so it’s a wash.
Have a great day. I’m out.

SS’s usually have less time to think about it before they throw.
