This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty the – “Just Say No To Jenrry Mejia ” Edition 03-14-10

I have a man crush on Jenrry Mejia !!! – There I said it !! But with that being said I feel under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should Jerry Manuel be allowed to bring him up north when spring training finally breaks . First off the kid has yet to play and excel above AA ball, and as we saw yesterday , although he was dominant for the most part, you could see that he was having some issues with his control giving up one run in the two innings that he pitched. I can see how it could be a tempting option to put him in the bullpen as a setup man for Frankie Rodriguez with his blazing fastball and nasty curve – but I feel that Jenrry’s better suited as a starter. Imagine this starting rotation next year
Johan Santana,
Mike Pelfrey
John Maine (or) Oliver Perez
Jonathan Neise
and Mejia
This could be a dominant rotation, filled with young arms that could dominate most line ups! The future is Mejia – but in my opinion , the future is not now .

” Be patient Mets fans – Be patient !”

And with that said … HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

New York Mets claimed pitcher Fernando Nieve on waivers from the Houston Astros on March 14, 2009.This was a great under the radar pick up for the Mets. Fernando started his season for the Mets Buffalo farm team where he showed that he had major league stuff. He pitched well for the Mets last season until he became a member of the not so exclusive Mets disabled list with a torn quad. He is currently in the mix for either the Mets fifth spot in the Mets starting rotation or in the bullpen.

And while you are getting your NCAA brackets in order, don’t forget that there are just 22 Ray Knight days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

Agree 100% on Mejia, if Niese doesn’t show more I’d send him down too and let Takahashi take the 5th spot to start the season. Underline, start the season. I also wonder if Omar might start speaking with Washburn as a fall back. Still unsigned, not that I want him, just talking out loud. For me this is the week that get’s interesting as it’s time to start getting the anticipated daily lineup playing and finalizing decisions to start the year.

Great article by David Lennon in Newsday on Met’s 1st round pick Steven Matz and his time at his first spring training working at the minor league complex. He has #23. Nice number for a rook. Odd number for a pitcher, IMO. He’s due to get his first bullpen sessions in about a week or two. Niese, Mejia, Familia, Matz, hmmmm not too shabby a SP prospect list. Lennon is a preferred writer in that he’s the only one I’ve actually heard come out and say the Met’s should win the Wildcard and that people acting like this team has no talent need to get a bit real. Granted, this was before Reyes but still he had a good take on the team.

Well, if Takawakky keeps this up, I am fine with him starting as the #5, and letting Neise getting fully healthy and ready to go in AAA, but at a more gentle pace. no need to push too hard too soon.

And Mejia has a ton of potential. And absolutely, 100% has not shown he is fully developed and ready to be in the majors. Not as a SP, and not in the pen. Not now.

If he has a strong MiL season, and is getting toward innings limits, and they need the help, let him join the pen in September. But not in april.

If Mejia is the real deal, I’ll definitely be looking forward to Johan, Solid #1A acquired via FA, Pelfry, Neise, Mejia makes me tingle. Have I mentioned before I’m already giddy about 2011? :)

I don’t see how Mejia making this club opening day will contribute to him developing and refining his pitches to be a potential good starter.
Notoriously, most pitchers are relievers b/c they don’t have the repertoire to be a starter (just ask Billy Wagner).

He was working in AA as a starter, correct? So why mess with that now? It’s not like anyone has determined he doesn’t have what it takes to be a starter at the ML level.

it is really just a desperation move at this point. And ST is too early, when they have a bunch of logical guys to sort through first.

You only do this if it is later in the year and he is looking great in the minors, and the pen springs a major leak.

Also have to consider what happens if the move fails. Not so much about his LT confidence or ultimate development (although it can certainly put him behind)

But, if he makes it, someone else doesn’t, and likely they lose someone (unless every other possible option can go to the minors).

I just think they should do everything possible to build a pen out of guys who aren’t the #1 pitching prospect in the system that has, from all reports, a great arm but more development needed.

Frankly, Manuel I can see not caring about 2-3 years down the road or Mejias future, since he likely won’t be here for it if they don’t win big this year.

But Omar IMO should be fired on the spot if he allows it to happen, or condones it.

Now, the real scary thought is Omar doesn’t like the idea, but Jeffy is telling them to do it.

yeah i think jerry is looking for short term preservation of his job than the mets being a long term contender at this point

      Hopefully a while. LOL.

But as for your lineup it’s very possible. You SR I don’t see Mejia, Holt AND Niese all working out.
