Ollie tries not Striking Out Marlins Mets Win 5-2

Oliver Perez after giving up just 1 walk in 4/IP said after the game in an article posted by Brian Costa of The Star Ledger “I didn’t even think about striking out any guys,” Perez said. “Sometimes you try to strike out guys and you start getting lost and lose your focus. Right now I’m just trying to not throw more pitches than four and five (per batter). The less pitches you have, the more deeper in the game you can go.

I like that Ollie is showing confidence and demonstrating concern with focus so please nobody tell him that Nolasco struck out 7 guys yet pitched deeper into the game.

Ricky Nolasco > Oliver Perez, but if Ollie can just trust his stuff, maybe, just maybe this contract won’t go down as one of the worst in Mets’ history. I really like Takahashi, saw his first appearance live a few weeks ago. He really mixes his pitches well and seems to have a general idea what he’s doing out there. I’d like Jerry to give him a start sometime soon. Don’t know why they care so much about Nieve. He had a few decent starts last year, but the guy isn’t very good, never has been. I’d go with Taka as the No. 5, Figgy as a longman (he’s got a rubber arm and is more suited for this role), cut Nieve and send Niese down to AAA. If Taka can’t cut it or the inevitable injury happens to Maine or Perez, bring Niese back up. And I don’t get tired of saying it, for the love of God Jerry, send Mejia to AAA so he can start. Setup relievers are a dime a dozen. No. 1 starters are special and hard to come by. Wally Backman for manager! Feels good to be back in the fold ladies and gentlemen, and by the way, this site keeps getting better and better while Metsblog continues its long descent into the dumpster. Great work guys!

Agreed on Nolasco > Ollie (about an hour ago I drafted Nolasco onto my fantasy team, alas Ollie went undrafted) but I will be very, very pleased if Ollie strikes out fewer hitters and as a byproduct walks fewer and consistently pitches deeper into games.

Welcome back you were missed ASod. I had stopped checking your blog due to lack of updates and am very happy it is once again humming along. Anyone reading this that doesn’t know what I’m talking about check out “Mets, Music and Other Musings” in our blogroll over there ———–>

Ollie went undrafted because our league scores walks…

          1. GravediggerHebner

Going in I thought for sure that “Ollie’s BB Brigade” would take him. Your team name is a lie! :-)

          2. njstuckintx

            He’s on his watch list.

          3. darknova306

            Curse you! :p

          4. darknova306

Ollie’s still out there, so you never know… ;)

        2. njstuckintx

Grave, yr team is pretty solid. You will have to start explaining your love of almost all things Astros…

          1. GravediggerHebner

That was definitely NOT the plan. I have always liked Carlos Lee and was happy to take him but the rest of those guys just kind of happened.

The NY Times suggest Takahashi might start a split squad game on Sunday.

They also may have solved our ongoing nickname problem for Igarashi, apparently in Japan he’s called “Rocket Boy” on account of his blazing fastball.

          Thanks Grave,
It is indeed good to be back off the DL. Really like Takahashi, much better than the one we had last year or two years ago, whenever the heck that was.

          1. njstuckintx

Didn’t realize that was your blog. solid blog, my man. Good to have you around again.

        2. stickguy

          Well, that name ain’t happening.

          I say stick with Iggy.

also nice to see a couple of Ks from him. A good thing for a set up man to be able to get.

      +1

Ollie talking about how pitchers can lose focus is hilariously ironic. If he can keep himself on track and just focus on getting outs, maybe our rotation won’t be a disaster.

      1. ceetar

The only thing I worry about here, is whether or not he understands what’s going on, and if he’s being coached properly. because he still should primarily try to strike guys out, and get them to miss. Pitching to contact is not a way to be a good pitcher. Hopefully he’s just learning here, about more tools he can use.

        1. stickguy

Don’t think meat. Just do what the catcher tells you to.

and pitching to contact, unless you are a severe ground ball pitcher, is not a recipe for success.

But being able to stay closer to the strike zone can help!

I am also a big fan on throwing pitches that they can’t make contact with too. That can work well.

  2. trs86

    Gotta love Ollie.
    Reminds me of Larry Bird:
Team that puts the ball in the basket the more scores more points, team that scores the more points usually wins the game.

  3. trs86

As for my team, I was not used to not having a P slot in the pitching section. Thus I did not pay attention and drafted all hitters for my bench. Gonna have to fix that. Ollie here I come, LOL.

    1. stickguy

gonna have a big year. Wins and Ks at least. ERA won’t kill ya. DOn’t expect him to help with WHIP or walks (if you use that as a catagory) though.

  4. metsfan4decades

Perez has some natural born talent with absolutely no idea how to pitch. Sounds like he worked hard all winter, is in very good shape. Now it’s a matter of having a game plan for every start, every batter, every pitch.

From his quotes, sounds like someone is giving him advice on that. And I’m not exactly sure it’s the best advice for him. If his game is being a strike out pitcher, the idea would be to figure out how to keep the batters off balance 2, 3 and 4 times through the line up. Adjust for each time through – ala Johan. Here’s hoping the veteran catchers we added can guide him through that. Because I just don’t think it’s something he gets on his own….

    1. stickguy

yeah, turning him into a nibbler isn’t going to go well.

and the catcher should have the game plan. Most pitchers shouldn’t be thinking too hard, and ollie probably should skip it entirely.

Just look at barajas for a sign and location, then make that pitch. And if he gets confused, have a conference on the mound.
