This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty The ” Has Pelfrey Licked His Yips?” Edition 03-18-10

I know it is just a spring training game and the real season has yet to start. But I was pleasantly surprised to see that Mike Pelfrey had a almost mistake free outing against the Boston Red Sox yesterday. Mike shut down the Red Sox formidable offense, including Kevin Youkilis, Victor Martinez and and David Ortiz. He let up only four hits and one earned run in four innings of work ( the only run was due to a misplayed groundball by Alex Cora). After the game Pelf revealed that he was mixing in more off-speed pitched which helped to fool the Red Sox batters. This is a good sign it looks like Pelfrey is finally settling down as opposed to last year where he looked like a frayed nerve , suffering from an onslaught of the dreaded yips. Jennry Mejia continues to impress, retiring the Boston batters in order. I will stick to my guns and say that he needs to spend the year in the minors as a starter and if the he excels down there and the Mets are in dire need of his services , then – and only then do I feel he should be called up. My favorite Met name – Tobi Stoner (hehe) pitched one inning letting up a run. This kid if he can develop a third pitch might be able to get on the fast track to Flushing, but right now he is destined to spend  the entire year in Buffalo. And Kudos go out to Fernando Martinez for continuing to tear the cover off the ball ! That three run Jack yesterday was a monster, and I hope he is making both Jerry and Omar’s jobs a bit difficult in terms of sending him down. Folks I might have to amend my previous statement about the kid – I think he is ready !!!

” Does Mike have his yips licked?”

And with that said … HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

New York Mets traded Jesse Orosco to the St. Louis Cardinals for Joe McEwing on March 18, 2000. I was happy when the Mets re-signed Jesse that off season, and I admit I was more than upset when they traded him, butSuperJoe proved to be one of the better utilityman in the business, although it would have been nice to see Jesse pitch in one last World Series for the Mets.

And while you are watching the March Madness tourny tonight – just remember there are 18 Art HoweKidding – kidding ! I mean Darryl Strawberry days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

I didn’t catch the game yesterday, but it’s good to hear that Pelfrey looked good and was mixing in the offspeed stuff. How did his sinker look?

You know, I’m looking forward to heading down the road to Buffalo this year for some Bisons action. That team is looking to be pretty solid this year. And I agree here about Mejia, he needs to work on being more consistent with his control, and could use the extra experience in AAA. If he’s the real deal and ready, he’ll be up soon enough, no need to rush him like some people want to do.

Man, this season needs to start… we’ve pretty much talked all the relevent points to death this offseason.

I was listening to the boston feed & they were extremely impressed with his off speed pitch – not sure if he utilized the sinker

I had no access to watch the game yesterday, but the last game I could watch where Pelfrey pitched he was doing that licking of lips thing. Not as pronounced though as last year. So that must be a nervous habit he picked up.

I see he developed a blister on one of his fingers by the end of his outing yesterday. Here’s hoping that heals quickly.

I too am rethinking my original stance on FMart being on the Opening Day roster.

I think IF we could trade GMJR for a good MI guy OR Pagan in a package for a mid-rotation starter then Fmart could being on the opening day roster. For now with both GMJR and Pagan playing well there really is no room.

I could handle moving one of them (GM jr obviously being the preference, at least to me, since he should be the odd man out anyway when CB comes back).

Another solid SP option would be nice. I also wouldn’t mid a MI upgrade, but I still have hope Reyes will be back reasonably soon, so unless it is someone that can replace Castillo, I don’t know what we would do with the new guy. Not a bad problem to have, but you have to be careful with limited trading chips.

Yeah I was thinking that GMJR might bring in a guy who could be a utility type guy I have no ideas in mind.

          1. stickguy

doubt Omar would do that, since as soon as Reyes is back, you have Tatis and Cora already. So where is the new guy gonna fit?

Oh, they have my new man crush Russ Adams already too for MI bench.

“but, there is still plenty of time for this to all play out, and i think it’s foolish to make projections…”

Then why do you have 100 post in the last 3 weeks making projections?

    1. rustyjr

      Mr fwicg I presume ?

I thought he was talking about you at first, but I reread the piece and couldn’t find the quote, so I went with plan B

    2. stickguy

should I assume you are referring to your former BFF?

Lmfao I loved the quote from Matt about dealing with negative posts lol

        1. trs86

The entire premise is laughable. MC teaching someone how to deal with criticism.

Forget the last 3 weeks…he made his projection about 2 sentences prior to that quote. LOL

He. Makes John Kerry look like a non waffler lol

      2. trs86

        LOL, you are right.

Jesse Orosco. What a career. From signing the Declaration of Independence, to freeing the slaves, to scuttling Germany’s fledgling nuclear program during WWII, to pitching in MLB for 52 years, the dude is freakin’ incredible.

The whole closer by committee with McDowell & Orosco… Ahh the memories.

When the Mets first acquired Orosco in a trade for Jerry Koosman he, Orosco, actually had a nasty fastball. It’s amazing how, after losing the fastball, he changed himself into a soft toss breaking ball pitcher allowing him to pitch until the age of 98. :)
