This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty The ” Sean Green Makes Me Sick ” Edition 03-19-10

I wasn’t able to catch today’s game on SNY, but at I heard most of that feed on on my awesome I-Phone app -MLB at bat 2010 ( you gotta get this !!). Johan was not stellar , giving up five earned runs ( including two solo homers in the first)on nine hits through three and a third innings. But don’t let that fool you ! Sean Green like he did for much of last season allowed the Twins to blow the game wide open by allowing two inherited runners to score before giving up a earned run of his own. I know it is only spring training, but Sean Green has never done much to impress me . He walks a ton of batters, he has a tendency to be wild and in my opinion he really shouldn’t be on the opening day roster on May Fifth. I would rather see Neive or Figgy in the pen rather than Green at this point. But there were a few bright spots today. Ruben Tejada I believe is making his case for being the stop gap everyday shortstop until Jose Reyes comes back. He had two well hit doubles and from what I heard he turned some good plays in the field. Omir Santos blasted a solo shot today and is hopefully making himself attractive as trade bait to teams that are searching for a catcher. Oh Yeah Jenrry Mejia also pitched and gave up one run on one hit ( please leave him of the major league roster – PLEASE !!!) But otherwise it was your typical mid March spring training game .

And on that Note ….. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!

” You better hang your head in shame !!”

Happy Birthday remembrances goes out the Mets first All-Star , The late Richie Ashburn (1927) .
Reliever from the ’71 team , Don Rose is 63 (1947) . Don only played one game for the Mets in ’71 when he was a late September call up. He was one of the secondary players to be traded with Nolan Ryan to the California Angels in exchange for Jim “Freekin” Fregosi.

Forgotten Mets backup firstbaseman from the ’86 team ,Tim Corcoran is 57 (1953).

And Don’t forget while you watch the replay of today’s game – just remember there are just 17 Keith Hernandez days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

Totally agree on Green…never liked the guy….wouldnt mind if he is NOT on the opening day roster

I believe Green’s got an option anyway, so just send his no-control arse down to AAA. There are other guys (Figs, Misch, Nieve) pitching much better who could do what Green could do (but better). And I’m actually hoping Mejia gives up a few runs and makes the decision academic. The kid’s got to be starting in the minors. Like what I’m seeing from Tejada. He deserves a shot, at least until Reyes comes back (then you send him back to AAA for everyday ABs, probably at second).

Interesting in that I don’t think either is ready but why is it ok to throw Tejada in the fire but not Mejia?

green is owed more money than the figmeister and neive ( he gets 950 grand regardless where he pitches – the other 2 get 500k) i dont know if a platoon of russ adams and cora will be adequate until jose gets back

Good question, and I’ll try to answer here. I think you can shield Tejada a bit more, split up the starts between him and Cora. He probably wouldn’t be up much more than a month (hopefully less) and then you send him back down for everyday ABs in the minors. The thing with Mejia is the way they’re using him. He really should be honing his skills as a starter in the minors. He seems to have the stuff to become a No. 1 or 2 starter. Putting him in the major-league pen this year could be a big hindrance to his development, unless they see him exclusively as a reliever, which is too early to make that determination. That’s the distinction, I guess.

Mike Pelfrey’s statement the other day about “… one of these day’s I might actually be a Pitcher” was the perfect basis for Mejia being sent down. Mike was in Mejia’s position 4 years ago as a 22 year old. He was rushed up through the system, didn’t get to stay in the minor’s and work on his secondary pitches and approach and lo and behold 4 years later he’s finally working a change up and splitter in to go with his fastball & sinker. I’m hoping they get this one right and get him to AAA to become the Starter we think he could be.

Wow, Ralph said F-Mart swing reminds him of Ted Williams. Man, that’s some serious praise. Sorry, just watching the re-run.

      *him = Mejia

Kiner said the same thing about Strawberry. They actually went to a split screen to show the comparisons in their swings. It’s amazing the talent that was wasted by both Gooden and Strawberry.

Just gotta look at Soylent Green’s outing. Yuck, hope he like’s Buffalo. Hopefully, they don’t try to sell this guy as a sidearmer on the team because “he give’s hitter’s a different look”. Yeah, a batting practice pitcher look.

Manuel isn’t smooth enough to mix up pitchers like that anyway. Might as well try out R.A. Dickey for that matter.

    2. asod75

He gives the hitters a look at balls outside the zone, that’s about it. Green is terrible.

I’m with you on Green. For whatever reason though, every time I hear anyone talking about Green it’s always with the assumed air he’ll be in that BP come opening day. I just don’t get it. Like you said, it’s not like there aren’t other options.

I’m torn concerning Tajeda. If he was defensively lights out this spring, I’d be saying he should be on the roster in Reyes’ absence. However, he’s made like 5 errors out there so far. Could be just nerves but still….He did have two doubles today.

There’s more now making a case for FMart being on the roster. You you said, Ralph went on about that today during the game. Said as good as he’s hitting, with Beltran and Reyes out to start the season, how can you not bring him north?

I’m still not worried about Johan – yet. As long as he’s on his game come opening day, it’ll be fine. If he struggles at that time, then I’ll be worried. He says he feels fine – no arm/elbow pain at all. Said it’s almost scary. I highly doubt he forgot how to pitch well. So to me, it has to be just a matter of him working on his mechanics and such to get back to pitching like he can without the pain that plagued him all of last year.

      1. Hazmet

Well #17 we knew it had to be Mex. Waiting to see who will be #16. There’s the obvious choice, then the ’70′s choice who once wore #12.

btw – keep up the great work. enjoy the great weather this weekend.

        1. rustyjr

well out of spite i might go with someone real scrubby lol

          1. Hazmet

Ohhhhh nooooooo. There’s no spite in the heart of the RJ I know, only truth, justice, and the orange and blue way.

          2. rustyjr

well its gonna be a surprise lol

      2. metsfan4decades

Oh, don’t know how I missed that. And I’ve been looking for those countdowns each day too.
Too busy trying to post my agreement with you about Green – LOL.
I just read where it looks like Green is winning the nod so far over Parnell. You have got to be kidding me….

    2. Hazmet

I wouldn’t get to concerned with Johan even beginning the year, he’s a second half Pitcher anyway. So long as he stay’s healthy should be no worries.

      1. metsfan4decades

Except last year, he was stellar right out of the gate until mid June or so. Must have been when those bone chips really started bothering him.

        1. Hazmet

True, good point. But last year was skewed by the WBC foolishness he tried to rush to get ready for. At least I’ll try to sell myself on that reason.

      2. GravediggerHebner

I was just looking at his 2004, post elbow chips surgery, Cy Young award winning season. After 12 starts he was 2-4 with a 5.50 ERA and he finished at 20-6, 2.61.

Check out his gamelogs from ’04, especially from June 9th on – friggin’ amazing.

wow – won 1 game each in April and May. Then just kept getting better and better. No wonder he’s not noted as a first half pitcher.

    This over on MLBTR:

7:28PM: FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal (via Twitter) passes on this quote from Beimel’s agent, Joe Sroba: “Talks with [the] Mets have fallen apart. Beimel is re-open to consider all clubs and willing to be flexible.”

    1. GravediggerHebner

Oh yeah, Rusty is all over that. I think you’ll get a kick out of the graphics in his post about it.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Dang, how’d I miss that?

    2. rustyjr

Beat ya to it my dear look at the new column lol
