Davey Johnson Says Dealing With The Loss Of Reyes And Beltran “you have to battle through it”

When asked “What do you think of the current Mets, who seem to battle never-ending injuries?” during a Q&A by the NY Times Vincent M. Mallozzi. Former NY Mets Manager Davey Johnson said,
It’s unfortunate, especially when you lose your shortstop and your center fielder. But you have to battle through it and get guys like Angel Pagan and Gary Matthews Jr. to step up, and it looks like they’ve been doing that. In ’87, the year after we won the World Series, injuries killed us. I had all five of my starters and our reliever Roger McDowell out for a few months at a time, and Darryl Strawberry went into rehab that year, but we still managed to win 92 games.

-It’s always nice to see Davey but it would be nice if one day he is brought back home as a senior adviser for the New York Mets.

    *sigh*
The days when the Mets had managers everyone respected…

hopefully neither guy is out for months. If Beltran comes beack on the early side of th erange (mid-late April) as he seems to think he will, it will be a major boost.

Wish we could get an update on Reyes (only if positive, of course!) since he could be back real quick once they tell him he is good to go.

Maybe this is a stretch but I hope it fits in the context of “battling through it.”

Was listening to a discussion on Boston sports radio this morning about the concept of professional athletes playing for “the uniform” as opposed to “the money.” It was brought up because former Bruins great Cam Neely said that you see more of the latter and less of the former these days and they are very worried that having won a championship recently their Celtics are now just playing for “the money.”

So the station host ran off a list of current/recent Boston pro athletes who he deemed to have played for “the uniform” and one of them was Jason Bay.

I guess my point is with Bay, and the other newer players that at least give off the distinct impression that they play for “the uniform” on this roster, perhaps this 2010 Mets team will be better able to “battle through it” than the 2007, 2008 or 2009 incarnations.

The flip side is the guy that made his money, and now wants a ring (although they usually just suck their way onto the yeankees..)

And Bay is in that situation. He knows he probably signed his last contract (or certainly isn’t looking at or worrying about his next one), so what else is left but to play for the uniform (I am assuming that doing whatever it takes to get to the WS is the same thing).

Everything I ever read about bay does support this I guess. Sounds like a throw back guy.
