Ike Davis Is Told To Hit The Road

Ike Davis who hit a ninth inning game tying solo home-run in yesterday’s game vs the St Louis Cardinals is told after the game to pack his bags. Why? To travel to Kissimmee and face the Astros Roy Oswalt today.

According to Brian Costa of The Star Ledger, Jerry Manuel wants to watch Davis against better pitching. What was Ike’s reaction to all this? “That’s a good reward,” Davis says.

-Way to go kid!

Ike is most definitely making his case. Would I prefer him to season a little in AAA? Yes. Would I be upset if he makes the big club? Not at all, on the assumption he’s the every day starting 1B, getting ABs against both lefties and righties. I refuse to accept another scenario.

If he earns the job, let him have it.

I look at position players differently than pitchers too, especially for defining ready.

Davis can do what he needs to do, so he isn’t really going to “learn” in AAA, more like perfect (if that is the right word). But, he can perfect what he needs to in NY too.

THe question to me isn’t if he could eventually get up to speed, iit is can the Mets live with the learning curve (adjustment period) which theoreticlaly could be shorter with a another year in AAA, but he will have one eventually when he comes up.

A pitcher (Mejia) is different. They need to have learned (mastered) their pitches and control to be ready. lus he is only 20, with Davis being 23 and having played in a top college program, as close to the MiLs as you are going to get. So I owuld consider Mejia a rush job, but not davis.

Tejada doesn’t bother me as much as Tejad, even though I don’t think he is ready either

I dunno. I wasn’t going to be against Davis if they went that way, but with Beltran (and now Reyes for sure) out for Opening day and/or all of April, I’d rather the more of a ‘sure’ quantity in Murphy, and not risk Davis coming up and being a virtual automatic out once the pitchers are pitching for real.

I really don’t know what to make of this anyway. What happens if Davis strikes out against Oswalt? Demotion? And if he gets a hit or two, cleanup spot in the lineup?

        with jerry? entirely possible.

If Davis hits 2 bombs today vs Oswalt while Murphy takes an 0 for in his game what will the commentary be like after the game I wonder?

I think we all just want Murphy to show signs that he will be fine at 1st his glove work has been good so far I’d say and that is a definite plus for him I’d say but it would be nice to see him and the rest of the Mets just finish the month strong.

speaking of Tejada, why not do the same thing? Start him 5 games in a row against better pitching to see what he can do with it.

This is even more important in my opinion, because I don’t think there is any question Murphy is a better player than Cora. So if you can find a good temporary option in Tejada for SS for a bit, that adds a lot more than Davis playing first and very possibly not being ready. It’s why it’s pretty obvious he didn’t really think this through.

The obvious answer is Rookies take the bus. Murphy is now a ‘veteran’ and gets to stay, and Jacobs is going to DH so has to do that at home ,since the Astros aren’t using one.

it does make sense to give the guys on the bubble a better look during the last ocuple of weeks of ST. make them play against better pitchers (or hitters for the Ps). That tells you more (or hopefully will) than early March ABs against guys wearing #86.

It’s interesting that now he’s getting a reward and that Jerry now wants to see him against the better pitching. What was the last week or so when he was buried on the bench? What changed since then?

Jerry got slapped around by the FO?

Or how about, Murphy and Jacobs did nothing with their PT, and the team is actually starting to either worry about production at 1B, or thinking that Davis might actually be the best option?

I’m inclined to agree with your second paragraph more than your first.

I agree I figured they wanted to get the people they knew were competing to go up North more ab’s and Ike would be assigned to AAA by now.
