They are going to keep trying until they can run Mejia out there 3 days in a row, aren’t they?

    Dopes.

I think Murphy man is going to be in the witness protection program soon. Bummer for him!

Although there is a guy over on MB that will be happy (Sylowxx). Murph obviously slept with his dog and kicked his mother for starters, but he must have done something worse. I have never seen 1 poster be so obsessed with “proving” a particular player is the worst ever and will singlehandedly cause the mets to finish last (along with global warming, and passing the health bill).

Makes Alex and his obsession with DW look like puppy love.

    Oh, and Go Big Pelf!

    1. trs86

I don’t know, have you seen my obsession with Figgy (or perhaps yours with King Luis)? LOL

As for Murphy he was the starter in yesterday’s game with the regulars right? He went 1-3 and was taken out for Carter. I guess at this point they are really trying to see who makes the bench.

    2. Mr North Jersey

      lol wow that harsh?

    3. ceetar

I argued the point with Sylow in like November. He refuses to listen to reason, and will argue anything you say by finding a stat or reason why it doesn’t matter.

What, Murphy had a good September? well, those homers were off pitchers that, during the month of September, had bad ERA+s..so it doesn’t really count. Always something. If he wasn’t touting over-hyped statistics(and successfully using a computer), I’d say he was Mike Francesa.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Somewhere Francesa is saying ouch!!! :-)

        1. ceetar

No he’s not. He doesn’t read blogs. I doubt he knows how to do more than read email, at best. You can tell by the way he asks the producers to look up ridiculously easy to look up stuff, like Wright’s home run totals last year, or things like that.

          1. Mr North Jersey

I meant more in a Physic connection type of way. :-)

I agree though Fran is computer illiterate.

    4. metsfan4decades

On this, IMO, MC is way off. Sent Taka2 to the minors? Way I’m looking at it right now, Taka2 has a very good shot at the 5th starter roll for April.

  2. Mr North Jersey

A lot of heat coming out of the pen today.

    1. trs86

      And Sean Green.

  3. trs86

Also notice the Cat in LF, looks like they are really trying to see who can be the LH utility bat off the bench.

Cat, Carter, Adams, Tejada are all trying to make the team. Big days for them.

  4. trs86

Speaking of obsessions, another reason I am not a Figgy fan.
    http://www.nj.com/mets/index.ssf/2010/03/nelson_figueroa_wants_to_be_mo.html

Stop whining. The reason that you don’t have a sure spot in the lineup is the same reason no one picked you up the 120 times you have been released. If money is an issue to you then sure go to Japan. If having a chance to go to AAA and then pitching for the Mets and trying to help them win a WS is what you want then do it and keep your mouth shut.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      You would have a problem.

      1. trs86

        Yup. LOL. Can’t help it.

      2. trs86

It really is a problem too. I need medication that can only come from Japan. Perhaps Figgy can get it for me.

      3. trs86

At least I know I am in the right now. MC is campaigning for him.
“the Mets are going to lose figgy again, because they’re going to goof this up”

Uh Matty, when did we ever lose Figgy?

        1. trs86

Speaking of. Nice cheap plug in the title there as well. Wonder why he chose Geico insurance?

        2. ceetar

He’s sorta right though, that it would be goofing up if they lose a player because they kept Meija in the pen.

          1. trs86

Yeah, in that sense it would be a shame to lose any player for keeping Mejia too early. But other have options, Parnell, Green…

I just don’t get the lose him again? Like he is some long lost girl that we have a chance to win back. We never lost him to start with. We dumped him and he came crawling back.

I have no problem with Figgy making the team and either Parnell or Green going down. I have a tremendous problem with keeping Figgy and losing a guy like Nieve or Misch who can most likely match or exceed his production at a much younger age.

          2. metsfan4decades

            This…..agree.
Mejia does not belong in the BP come opening day.

  5. trs86

    Interesting:
Mejia’s presence might be very welcome in the Mets clubhouse. Alex Cora raved about the fact that Mejia “brings a lot of positive energy,” while praising his work ethic (“he’s one of the first ones here”) and saying that, “In the clubhouse, he’s made a great impression.”

  6. ceetar

Hey, can I complain about Craig Carton again today? Anyone listen to him this morning?

    1. njstuckintx

What’d he say? He used to be a Mets lover, I thought, or at least he was 2 years ago when I was chilling in the tri-state area.

      1. ceetar

He’s a Mets hater now, that claims to be a Mets fan but rooted for the Yankees, and basically still does.

He was mocking the Mets slogan for 2010, and was doing some lame bit where he thinks the Mets should have whispers of ‘we believe’ through the park before games. I imagine it’d sound like a haunted house or something.

        1. Mr North Jersey

Carton’s act will get old soon enough I hope. He wants to be the Howard Stern of Morning Sports Talk but I don’t think he has what it takes.

        2. GravediggerHebner

I understand the reason for Carton’s presence, but for me all it means is that I don’t listen to “sports radio” WFAN until after 10:00am. I’m not a fan.

But to be fair, I love Steve Somers and he’s not exactly “sports radio” either. I think I just enjoy his sense of humor more than Carton’s.

          1. metsfan4decades

Same here – and I usually then click it off at the 1pm hour to save myself from being aggravated by the MF drive-by show too.
Although lately, I left it on and when he was off on a rant about the Mets (like with Jose and his thyroid) found myself listening. It’s like a bad train wreck you can’t turn away from.

          2. Mr North Jersey

Somers humor is the best. I miss him not having his overnights. Nothing comes close to having replaced him yet.

        3. njstuckintx

Hating on the Mets gets the ratings these days, I guess. I liked him and Boomer as an alternative to Mike & Mike. All they talk is football, non stop. I hope that when the Mets are clinching a spot in the playoffs somebody calls out them out.

          1. Mr North Jersey

I’d rather listen to Boomer & Carton anyday then those cyborg ESPN Units called Mike & Mike.

          2. ceetar

I liked boomer and carton at first, but Carton’s just gotten insane and stupidly annoying. I never listened to Imus either though.

And ESPN is bad. Cowherd only talks football too it seems, and I really don’t care about things like the Raider’s kicker’s salary.

I actually find myself listening to Michael Kay though, as annoying as he is. Don and Bonnie are good when Kay’s away though.

          3. Mr North Jersey

Bonnie is good I agree so is Don but at times I think he holds back.

          4. GravediggerHebner

Completely agree that Kay’s show is excellent when he’s not there.

Roughly 4 years ago I actually liked listening to Kay’s show even with him, but one particular day I lost interest. He was discussing John Maine with a caller, the caller was expressing some hope for the future with Maine and Kay want on a rant repeatedly screaming “WE KNOW WHAT JOHN MAINE IS!” over and over.

Also I don’t find his deliberate mispronunciation of SNY cute. I now only exclusively call his TV network Y-E-S.

          5. njstuckintx

Yeah. I’m a fan of Don. He’s good.

As for Kay and that SEEEEEeeee Yeah HR call, no thank you.

          6. DNDJohan aka kistics

Yes I find the SNY thing annoying too. According to his thing, what are you supposed to call CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, ESPN, USA, MTV……

He’s such a homer and a Mets hater. I don’t mind it if he admits to it, but he never admits it.

          7. ceetar

he’s at least consistant though. If he’s talking about the Yankees, it’s semi normal. And he rarely has anything good/new/insightful to say about the Mets. (how could he, he works during the games) but at least he won’t randomly decide he needs to kill Murphy.

          8. DNDJohan aka kistics

Personally I’d rather listen to the Fat man than Kay when discussing the Mets. I think the fat man is fair at times (probably because of the relationship that WFAN with the Mets), but Kay is just outright biased.

I just wish Don would stick up little more, but I guess he doesn’t want to have constant argument 9 months of the year.

    2. metsfan4decades

Just listening to Carton – on any subject- makes me crazy.

    3. DNDJohan aka kistics

      He’s funny…

  7. Mr North Jersey

My dark horse Carter gets another hit. I would like to see this kid get a shot if not here somwhere else so long as he doesn’t stay in the NL East.

  8. metsfan4decades

GameDay really slow today for me. Ed Coleman reported over 10 minutes ago that Pelf knocked in the go ahead run in the top of the 4th. My GameDay still has him up at bat…

    1. trs86

Yeah, incredibly slow. I just want to know about the pitching. So far just the 2 long-balls.

      1. trs86

        Another 2 run bomb.

        1. metsfan4decades

Ed Coleman said those first two solo homers were probably helped by the wind as it’s blowing out something like 30mph.

          1. trs86

Yeah at least he seems to be rebounding well to those.

Interesting that Fangraphs says that the Mets may come to their senses with Perez and Pelfrey and Niese should take a spot. LOL OK there statheads.

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

The announcers are saying (after Zimmerman’s 2nd HR), something like “That’s no cheap HR. The first 3 probably stayed in for most ball parks”.

            Well… I guess that’s a good thing…

          3. trs86

LOL, when giving up 4 HR, one must look for positives.

          4. metsfan4decades

            I’ll say….

          5. stickguy

how about he is taking the mets week up the middle infield defense out of play?

That’s about as positive as I can get.

  9. DNDJohan aka kistics

Listening to the game broadcast by WFED.

All of sudden you hear this guy screaming “Hey Pelfrey… blah blah blah…” can’t really make out what he said, but did not sound anything good. Next pitch, Pelf allows a HR to Willingham. And then this guy screams some more. Life of a professional athlete.

    1. trs86

      Gotta link for that?

  10. DNDJohan aka kistics

    Dang another HR by Zimmerman….

  11. DNDJohan aka kistics

LOL. Dan Warthen came out to change pitchers and double switch (FMart in for Frenchy). Radio announcers are saying that Frenchy threw his glove over to FMart as if FMart forgot to bring his own glove. LOL

And now he announces Mejia the ‘non roster invitee’ pitcher (I guess that’s right).

    1. trs86

Phenom in to pitch. Let see how the wind bothers him.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Got the last out of the inning.

  12. DNDJohan aka kistics

Taverez robbed Tatis of a HR

  13. saltygary

Can’t we all go back to the other post and discuss how good my fantasy team is?

    1. metsfan4decades

      LOL…..

    2. stickguy

I was trying to be polite. Didn’t want to point out the obvious flaws and suckitude. But, since you asked…

      j/k. I don’t remember who you had.

  14. stickguy

maybe Mejia will scuffle in his full inning (I assume he came in for 1 out, and gets to stay in?) I hate to root for that, but something has to happen to make sure he goes back to AA. And not as the closer.

Some of these ST parks are kind of small, and often there are gale force winds blowing out. So, hard to put much stock in ST HRs, unless they are the type that carry over the picnic area and land in the street. Those are probably good anywhere.

But, it would be nice to see Pelf not giving up 4 at a shot. Wonder if he was working on “stuff” again, at the expense of trying to get outs?

    1. metsfan4decades

Apparently, neither CC nor Hamels is looking too good in their starts today either.

      1. stickguy

hopefully for them it means something, as opposed to just being ST>

Hard to believe there are still 2 weeks until opening day. I swear it feels like ST has been about 3 months long.

  15. stickguy

So, what’s the score? Any Mets hitting? How did Mejia look in his 2nd inning?

    1. trs86

Well according to gameday Mejia got the first batter of the inning to ground into an inning ending double play. WOW! How can you not like this kid?

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL…
Mine is now showing a single, ground out, walk and double play.

        1. trs86

          Mine is as well… NOW.

      2. trs86

Now that’s a little better. Hit, walk, DP. No runs.

        1. stickguy

          damn!

  16. metsfan4decades

Some Phillies fans commenting on their game right now (which, BTW is televised on ESPN – I guess you get the respect when you’re the Yankees and WC)….
Saying Hamels is the ‘bad’ Hamels from last year. Struggling with command, everything up in the zone.

I’m telling you, this race is all going to come down to what team has the best pitching. On that note, as much as I think Mejia should start out in the minors, if they’re keeping Green to send him down, I might change my stance on that.
They BOTH ought to be sent down. We’ve got other options.

Someone said the reason Green will be given a roster spot is b/c of his almost 1MIL salary.

    1. stickguy

Green gets that if he is on the Mets, the Bisons, or home sitting on the beach. So it should have no impact.

I think he gets it because Omar is stubborn and doesn’t want to admit his mistake.

      1. metsfan4decades

There’s a big difference between sticking with Green and his salary and giving Ollie and his salary one more shot…

        1. stickguy

there is a big difference between SP and back of the pen OOGY types to. They should be giving Ollie another shot. They also need him way more than green (since if you want to remove them, you gotta replace them!)

Ollie was also hurt last year. Green just stinks.

          1. ceetar

The Mets, historically, HAVE been willing to release guys and eat the cost. (Marlon Anderson last year, for instance) so let’s not pretend just because Adam Rubin says so, that the Mets will keep Green for money reasons.

          2. trs86

He did not even exactly say that. Said that the Mets might be more inclined to keep him up because he cost the same both places. That does not really even make sense anyway.

  17. ceetar

I finally figured out what Carton was talking about. There’s a Mets ad in the paper with a picture of K-Rod that says “We believe in 8-inning games”. I’m not sure why they decided that was worth making fun of though.

Also noticed the comments by Manuel that it would be good for Meija to fail in the majors.

    1. stickguy

I think because Jerry did, he figures everyone should?

And I think he is wrong. It won’t (at this point) help him develop as a SP, and worse, it won’t help the Mets win this year.

      Talk about a lose lose.

Jerry is a dope and annoys me. He needs to go.

    2. trs86

Not exactly what Manuel said if it’s the same report. He just said it would be a positive for him even if he did come up and fail and be sent back down to work.

      1. ceetar

I read it as he’ll be stronger for having come up and failed. something about hunger, etc. But now it’s no longer about “Best 7 guys for the pen” and about developing a prospect, and therefore Manuel loses, let him start in AAA.

        1. trs86

Yeah, he said if he failed that it could make him stronger because he would be more hungry to come up and stay.

Again, I am done insulting Manuel for a decision he can’t even make.

          1. ceetar

If that was true no one would be discussing it though. Omar said Meija was head to AA, and then Manuel said “bullpen”. So everyone’s listening to Manuel more anyway.

But yeah, I’m more concerned about his ‘easing’ Tejada into SS and gotta “get Jacobs playing time to keep him fresh”

          2. trs86

Those are decisions he can make once the METS pick the roster. Same with Mejia. Come on Ceetar, the reason everyone is “discussing” it is because it’s ST and it makes a good story.

Hell put up a story on Mejia in the pen and see how many views and comments you get. It’s instant gratification.

          3. ceetar

Lol. Hey, I posted that cranepoolforum link with the pics and got it up just about everywhere in the Metsverse. :-D

I don’t see how Tejada doesn’t make the team. They do have to take another non-Cora ss, unless they take your friend..who was it..Adams?

          4. trs86

Yeah, not sure he has even played SS any this ST.

  18. stickguy

Just made the mistake of visiting the game thread over at MB. Seems like the season is over folks. No hope. the SP has no chance of being respectable, and the call is for Mejia to skip the BP and go straight to the rotation.

I also had to make fun of the guy obsessed with Murphy. I swear I have never seen him post anything that wasn’t a rant about how bad he is, and challenging other posters to put up a stat to prove he isn’t the worst player in the universe.

    1. trs86

That would be the Slowly or something.

I will say this, it would be hard to find a worse 1B statistically than Murphy.

      1. stickguy

But do you have to make it a crusade? Especially without ever posting an alternative (considering they have a budget, and normal teams often have to carry a low priced guy at a position even if he isn’t an all star).

I also have a problem with treating stats for a rookie as gospel, and deciding that there is no reason to look at trends (did they get better during the year and make adjustments?), or to assume that they might improve with more experience.

Heck, if you took 1st year stats for all players and based on that, very few would ever get a 2nd year!

So fine, don’t be satisfied with Murphy, but come up with an alternative that fits within the framework of budget, and available MiL talent (to use or trade).

        1. trs86

Yeah, he’s a big Ike Davis guy.

I have no idea what Murphy will produce but I will have to assume that he will still be near the bottom of the MLB 1B pile.

          1. stickguy

quite possibly. But, it is a team game. And if it works out that you are above average at other positions, it’s all about just scoring enough runs to win.

I would prefer to have A Gon or Fielder at 1B. But unfortunately, the Mets don’t have him.

And I like Ike a lot, but no guarantee he will be that much better this year.

          2. trs86

Agreed. Just saying it’s a spot that they can’t show some kind of dying loyalty to. If Murphy starts and still is not hitting they can’t be afraid to try other options.

          3. ceetar

It’s an easy decision if Murphy is hitting .250 with 2hr and Davis is hitting .350 in the minors. Baseball’s rarely that easy.

          4. trs86

            Agreed.

          5. wannybackstra

If Murphy is hitting .250 and Carlos Pena is available in July, you might see the Mets sending Bobby Parnell and some other potentially enticing prospect to Tampa.

          6. trs86

Agreed Wanny. You then could offer him arbitration and if he takes it move Davis to the OF if he is that ready.

          7. wannybackstra

Yeah, that would put Davis in the OF for only one year and I doubt Pena would take arbitration anyway with one last long-term contract on the line.

          8. trs86

One would imagine. Also, don’t you think it would be too dangerous for TB to keep him and offer arbitration (assuming they are not in the race)?

          9. wannybackstra

I think TB would trade him regardless just to free up cash (assuming they are out of the race).

Agreed it would be too risky for them to offer him arbitration — not while they need to come up with the money to sign Crawford.

  19. DNDJohan aka kistics

    Sounds like Iggy is struggling.

    1. trs86

Got the DP and out of the inning.

      1. trs86

After giving up 2 hits 2 walks and a run.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

          I guess I’ll take that….. for now….

  20. trs86

Big Cat saves a HR I think.

    1. wannybackstra

      Andres is back?

      1. trs86

Yup. Most likely would solve our 1B issues.

  21. stickguy

Man, the regular season can’t come fast enough.

Can’t wait to start ragging on guys for what they are actually doing (or not doing), instead of what people think they will or won’t do!

  22. trs86

Fmart throws out runner at home. Parnell getting hit hard.

    1. wannybackstra

      See ya upsate, Bobby P.

  23. trs86

Double by Pridie. I actually like this kid and he fits the role of defensive OF much better. I really hope that GMJR is traded or even Pagan in the right deal.

  24. trs86

    Mets lose 7-5.

  25. GravediggerHebner

Old friend Wilson Valdez with the walk off 2 run homer, Phils beat Yanks 9-7

    1. trs86

Didn’t he do that earlier in the year too?

      1. GravediggerHebner

He definitely had another walk off hit of some kind yes, I can’t recall if it was a homer or not.

    2. metsfan4decades

Well, nice to see some of these other NL east teams pitchers struggling yet in ST.

      1. trs86

yeah they said this was Marquis best outing.

        1. Mr North Jersey

Yea I think this was only his 3rd outing and coming in he had only 5.1/IP.

  26. metsfan4decades

With Green and Parnell not showing much consistency yet this ST, you think they might do something dumb like send those two down and give Mejia a spot in the BP?

I was really hoping Parnell would be showing some improvement this year. With his fastball, was hoping he could eventually pitch his way into that 8th inning role.

Well, Parnell hasn’t been terrible this ST. His ERA is 2.89 and his WHIP is around 1.5 (which actually isn’t very good). It certainly isn’t inspiring, but it’s better than most of our starters have shown so far!

I know Parnell has been better than Green. I haven’t looked at stats, just the game or box scores – but I think everyone in that BP has been better than Green, right?
Although I think he finally had a 1-2-3 inning the other day.

Very possible. Also I guess could save all 3 of the guys on survivor island.
