This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty The ” This Is Thirteen” Edition 03-23-10

Well there are approximately thirteen more days until Opening Day and already there are doomsayers in our midst. Yes that’s right kiddos Craig ” Skevosa” Carton and Mike “ I’m a genius of myself ” Francesa both took a break from their March Madness analysis to rip the New York Mets. First of was Carton. Craig in my opinion was the pettier of the two condemning their ” We Believe In Eight Inning Games ” slogan that was published in yesterdays newspapers. He said it is an embarrassment to Mets fans. You know I realize that the Craig Carton that is on the air is more likely a persona , and Carton can’t be this much of a douche when he is off the air ( or can he?) But look we Mets fans have always hated the Madison Avenue advertising hype that has been associated with this team – with the exception or the ’86 slogan ” Baseball Like It Outta Be!” that is . But it is once again Francesa who wins the award for being the snarkiest broadcaster,, when he was pretty much arm twisting Ed Coleman to admit that Daniel Murphy doesn’t deserve to be the everyday first baseman, Mike Jacobs was mislead, the Mets pitching other than Johan is in shambles , the bullpen is not set, and my personal favorite – Ike Davis should be the starting first baseman come Opening Day. Well Mike it is fairly obvious that you haven’t watched any of the Mets pre season games or read the papers because you would see that John Maine pitched well in his last outing, most of the runs that Mike Pelfrey gave up were due to wind aided homeruns, and Ollie has been better than  “just okay” as you have put it. But I still don’t understand his obsession with putting Daniel Murphy down. If Murph was on his beloved Yankees , Mike would be doing Cartwheels (with Mark Malousis trying to spot him while not getting crushed at the same time). Mike would be applauding Murph’s tenacity and his blue collar approach to baseball. Mike would try his best to make him a folk hero ala a Paui O’Neil or a Shelly Duncan, but no since he plays for the Mets he is a scrub and he can never ascend to a higher level of play. Mike your Yankee bias is showing – you better zip up you pants – oh wait your zipper is busted !

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!!!

Happy Birthday wishes go out to one of the lesser remembered spot starter / relievers that the Mets has during the mid ’90′s Mike Remlinger. (1966)

New York Mets traded prospect, Jonathan Guzman to the Kansas City Royals for outfielder, Shane Halter on March 23, 1999.

New York Mets signed free agent utility infielder Fernando Tatis on March 23, 2007. Fernando spent the entire ’07 season in AAA that season but he made the team on ’08 & ’09. He is currently trying to win the back up infielder job this spring.

And don’t forget – there are just 13 Roger Craig days until the Mets open the 2010 season against the Florida Marlins at Citi Field.

Hey I chose Roger Craig because he was one of the unluckiest pitchers in mets history & he wore the #13

I don’t care who you picked, there’s less than 2 weeks left!! :)

It was a tough decision prismo

I understand. He’s just one of my favorites from my youth!

            Don’t be a triskaidekaphobe!!

13 is NOT an unlucky number…it is my lucky number. Born the 13th of September, and my undergrad school was founded by 13 men with 13 dollars and 13 prayers under a charter of 13 article.

Here’s your first base tale of the tape! I based HR and RBI on 550 at bats, even though it’s ridiculous with so few in ST for each player.

    Name | Avg |Obp| Slg| Ops|HR|RBI
    Murphy .133 .176 .233 0.410 18 73
    Jacobs .174 .321 .435 0.756 48 48
    Davis .480 .536 .960 1.496 66 220

Extremely small sample size (20-30AB each), but my confidence in Murphy isn’t very high at this point. I’m a little worried. Not that I think he’d hit for an OPS of .410 in a full season, but it would be nice if he could do SOMETHING in Spring Training.

You’ve had too much coffee this morning, man. Relax. Murphy won’t hit worse than Schneider this year and Davis isn’t going to be better than Pujols, even at AAA. It’s Spring Training. All it indicates about the regular season is that a guy will start healthy or not healthy.

And you didn’t read my whole comment! As I said, I have no concern that Murphy would hit for an OPS of .410. But he’s not trying to miss the ball in ST (I think) – it may not mean much, but it means something.

        1. darknova306

Maybe he’s trying too hard because he thinks his job is up in the air?

If his OPS is hovering around 600-700 on May 1st, then I’ll worry.

“Maybe he’s trying too hard because he thinks his job is up in the air?”

Well that’s not a good sign, because it’s going to be the case all season!

          2. darknova306

Fair point. We’ll see. I still want to see him get a chance. His 12 HRs and 38 2Bs as a rookie were encouraging, so I still have some hope that he’ll be productive.

          3. prismo

            Could be. Doesn’t mean I can’t be a bit worried. :)

          4. trs86

Was his .300 OBP encouraging? I like Murphy but man he and Figgy get all the love while players like Castillo and Pagan get the shaft.

          5. darknova306

I’m not saying Murph is solid, or ever will be, just that I’d like to see him still get a chance. If in May he’s still hovering around .300 OBP and not really impressing anyone while Ike is lighting up AAA, make the move and be done with it.

          6. trs86

I don’t think the Mets currently have much of a choice for him not to get a chance but I have a hard time seeing him keeping it.

          7. darknova306

Fully agreed. In the end, he’s just a fill-in until Davis is fully ready anyway.

      2. prismo

        And f%&@ coffee. ;)

        1. darknova306

How do you get up so early without coffee?!? That’s crazy talk! :p

          1. rustyjr

Jeez it’s only st wright is batting around .260 should we be worried ? Answer is no so relax on murph

    2. stickguy

Come on Pris. Even you are forgetting my main man Carter? Put his numbers up there too!

      1. prismo

Haha sorry. He’s kicking butt, right? Alas, he has even less of a chance of starting than Ike does. Doesn’t really matter how he performs.

  3. prismo

And for center field. These players all have 30-40AB.

    Name | Avg |Obp| Slg| Ops| HR|RBI
    FMart .447 .425 .868 1.293 43 159
    Pagan .212 .278 .364 0.642 17 67
    GMJ .321 .406 .643 1.049 39 59

    1. njstuckintx

      Ike and Fmart for Co-MVPs!

      1. rustyjr

That should be misch/figgy lol don’t hit me trs

        1. trs86

That’s fine, it’s ST. I don’t hate Figgy. I want him in the organization where he can best help the Mets #6 starter.

Gotta give Taka an MVP as well.

  4. metsfan4decades

MF goes on and on about the Mets so he doesn’t have to deal with phone calls from Yankee fans who are nervous about their pitching situation.

The more I listen to MF, the more I really want the Mets to make post season and the Yankees to miss. Listening him to try and spin that would be almost as great as our Mets finally putting 2007-2009 behind them.

    1. rustyjr

      Totally agree

    2. stickguy

I honestly pay them no attention, but the yankees have pitching problems? Other than trying to decide on a 5th starter (which should be Hughes)?

If so, good for them! Although they will still likely win 92+ just by out slugging teams.

Maybe the offense though takes a step back this year. Same with the Phils. Catch an injury or 2, have a couple of older guys tail off, and suddenly their offenses aren’t quite the powerhouses they used to be.

But you are correct, Mets in and Yanks out of the playoffs would be a wonderful thing, especially for those of you actually in the NY market.

For me, Mets in and Phils out would be even better!

    3. prismo

You should try listening to sports radio in another market! I love listening to the DC sports radio down here in Maryland. They’re terribly biased, but it’s hilarious since I don’t care about the teams. When their team is hot, they’re way over the top (example: predicting the Redskins would go 10-6 last season), but then their team is cold they’re way way way too critical. Interesting hearing from an outside point of view.

      1. stickguy

I could never listen to WIP down here in Philly. I would rather listen to a Michael Kay and MF mets bash-a-thon. It would be less painful.

I do sometimes listen to the homeplate shows on XM. Some of them are actually pretty interesting, and you can here talk about different topics and teams. And only the occasional dig at the Mets.

  5. GravediggerHebner

No 13 Billy Wagner days? 13 Alex Cora days? Neil Allen?

Just kidding. The Mets history didn’t start in 1977. It’s great that you work all eras of the team into your daily countdown.
