Murphy goes Deep/Krod Strikes Out The Side – Mets Win 5 – 2

In a game where Santana pitched 5 2/3 innings giving up only 2 runs but looking hittable allowing 8 hits. Daniel Murphy had a good game going 2 for 4 with a 2 run homer in the 6th to give the Mets a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish. KRod came in to pitch the 9th striking out the side with a nasty curveball for the save.

It’s so nice to pour through the box scores again.

You’ve got that right. It was a long, cold winter….

      1. rustyjr

not for nuthin but it is still kinda nippy out

        1. metsfan4decades

True dat. But at least I can see my lawn now and the never ending snow is gone. Unfortunately, it all melted into my basement. Now if it will only stop raining….

  2. rustyjr

Was the Murphy Jack a bomb ?

    1. GravediggerHebner

Barely cleared that chain link fence but was against the wind. For a second I actually thought the OF had caught it.

      1. Mr North Jersey

        Me too.

        1. gipperpdx

Murph hits better at Digital Domain Park than he did at Tradition Field. Long live Digital Domain Park!

          1. rustyjr

            here here !!

          2. GravediggerHebner

Nice. SO you’re saying Murphy likes the double D. :-)

  3. GravediggerHebner

Good to see Murph get the average above .150, hopefully this game is a springboard for him.

Mildly concerned that (at least when I noticed) Johan’s FB was 89mph. I thought it was higher his previous ST start.

With the rare wind blowing in for a change, was much more like a “real” baseball game as it unfolded. Murph’s HR (off a lefty) was legit, against the wind.

    1. metsfan4decades

I’m really pulling for Murphy. Want him to see him play a good defense at first this year and a decent bat. Not that I think he’s long for this team – unless he can somehow learn second, but his work ethic deserves some success.

I wasn’t enamored with him when they brought him up in ’08. Was surprised he did well. I just didn’t see the talent there. But I’ve warmed up to him. I’m surrounded with so many younguns’ that can’t get their head out of the clouds and want to be handed life on a platter. It’s so refreshing to see Murphy working as hard as he is, taking nothing for granted.

Johan…He’s just that good that even w/o his best stuff he limits the damage. But I hear ya on the concern….

      1. rustyjr

It’s a shame that he’s holding cirstbase for Ike next year

    2. gategem

In case this hasn’t already been mentioned here early in the game Gary and Keith were discussing Murphy’s batting stance change where he’s more straight up and how uncomfortable Murphy looked. I may be wrong but I assume it was HoJo that suggested the change in stance.

  4. GravediggerHebner

For those of you who aren’t all over the beat writers twitter accounts, this from Brian Costa:

    - Manuel said the fifth starter job is Niese’s to lose. Need for Nieve, Takahashi in bullpen a factor.

So that hint might help us suss out the bullpen.

    1. Mr North Jersey

I wonder if the scenario I posed in a prior post will bear out? Will the 5th starter if it is Niese be kept down in AAA to make his scheduled starts till he is needed in the majors?

      1. GravediggerHebner

I have to sign off for a while so I can’t find a source for it right now but I recall reading/hearing from multiple sources that even with off days the Mets are going to go with all 5 starting pitchers right away. IIRC they like to give Johan extra rest when they can and this affords that opportunity.

        1. ceetar

just a random comment of Manuel’s. Pretty standard procedure though. They haven’t skipped the 5th spot in a while that I can recall.

        2. metsfan4decades

I read the same. Carrying 5 starters immediately.

        3. Mr North Jersey

MAN! It is looking tough for Carter and Figgy on making the team.

          1. rustyjr

shhh don’t wanna wake trs lol

          2. Mr North Jersey

for a sec it looked like you said don’t wanna wake troll. :-)

          3. rustyjr

            lmfao

          4. trs86

Yawn…. uh what did I miss?

          5. GravediggerHebner

Uh oh, someone woke the troll! ;-)

    2. rustyjr

No chance for figgy ? ( ducks)

      1. gipperpdx

        Free Figgy!

  5. stickguy

how could you miss that Murphy did it all today. He even swiped a bag.

Kind of odd though that th eonly SP candidates without bloated ERAs are the ones that aren’t going to make the rotation!

And I really, really hope they done lose 2-3 SP depth guys to waivers to keep guys with options in the pen (when there isn’t a clear cut expected production difference).

    1. metsfan4decades

‘Kind of odd though that the only SP candidates without bloated ERAs are the ones that aren’t going to make the rotation!’

More than odd….just a bit scary. We’ve all agreed all along what’s going to make or break this season is MOP. The starting pitching situation is such a big question mark.
Here’s hoping MOP get a couple of wins under their belt, which leads to some confidence, which leads to more wins. I think with Pelf and Maine especially this will go along way.

      1. Hazmet

Not so odd if you consider that for most of ST the other candidates usually have been coming in after the first 3 innings when what Starters are playing are out of the lineup. The other candidates are primarily go up against AA & AAA players so if they don’t do well that would be scary.

        1. metsfan4decades

          I never thought of that.

          1. Hazmet

To give credit where credit is due the guy in my Avatar discussed this at length in early March on Baseball Tonight. He spoke about how you couldn’t really tell what look like “over achievers” are doing in ST because they usually come in after the starter’s are out. This was in context as to how difficult it is for a youngster or journeyman to catch on in ST. At least in his book he wouldn’t pay much attention to their results because they usually came in after the first 3 innings.

            The Zen of Bobby V.

          2. stickguy

oh, you mean like Mejia. Got it.

    2. GravediggerHebner

It sure does seem odd at first glance about the bloated ERA guys getting the jobs, but then again I think it just shows that a large percentage of the decision of who gets a job and who doesn’t is not based on ST performance. Luckily for these guys:

      Aaron Heilman ST ERA 10.29
      Edwin Jackson ST ERA 8.25
      Jair Jurrjens ST ERA 9.00
      Jeremy Guthrie ST ERA 7.47
      Jake Peavy ST ERA 6.55
      Aaron Cook ST ERA 11.42
      Wandy Rodriguez ST ERA 9.69

I could go on but it’s ST for me too so the manager just took me out.

      1. Hazmet

Hey, Aaron lowered his 11.00 ERA since last I looked.

        FYI – Brian Stokes 1.80 ERA in 6 games, 10 innings, 2ER, 3BB, 7SO
He would have been nice in the mix still if for no other reason than to have more trade value then GMJ.

        1. trs86

I have heard a few reports that they don’t expect him to make the team. I don’t see that he has anymore value than GMJR at all.

          1. Hazmet

Wow. Just goes to show numbers aren’t everything. Especially ST numbers.

            Thx.

          2. trs86

Yeah just bloggers opinions though. Who knows? That could mean the Angels have a very good pen or that the bloggers don’t have a clue.

      2. metsfan4decades

wow – Jurrjens must be causing concern for the Braves nation.

Heilman….all I can say is I’m just glad we won’t be seeing him enter a game through our BP. No offense, Aaron……

  6. Mr North Jersey

    Anyone listening to Yankee game?

    1. Mr North Jersey

Wondering if AROD ducking FBI was discussed.

      1. Hazmet

Recently I’ve wondered if the Yankee’s did naming rights to their stadium wouldn’t it be perfect to call it “Reuter’s Field”. It just has such a phonetic ring to it.

      2. GravediggerHebner

I was watching the Yankee game on MASN but then I stumbled onto an radio interview with Trey Parker and Matt Stone so I turned the game off. At the point I turned it off Livan Hernandez was losing 1-0 in the 5th (I think) but was pitching very well.

  7. Mr North Jersey

Here you go for your enjoyment.
    How can we possibly compete?

    http://pabaseball.blogspot.com/2010/03/2010-phillies-predictions.html

    Offense:
    1B/Ryan Howard- .273, 105 r, 46 hr, 139 rbi, 197 k, 4 Howards.
    2B/Chase Utley- .295, 107 r, 30 hr, 105 rbi, 16 sb, finally wins a GG.
    SS/Jimmy Rollins- .272, 128 r, 15 hr, 79 rbi, 42 sb, defends GG.
    3B/Placido Polanco- .304, 96 r, 12 hr, 70 rbi.
    LF/Raul Ibanez- .268, 72 r, 18 hr, 81 rbi.
    CF/Shane Victorino- .290, 88 r, 15 hr, 79 rbi, 22 sb, defends GG.
    RF/Jayson Werth- .275, 103 r, 31 hr, 101 rbi, 16 sb.
    C/Carlos Ruiz- .267, 50 r, 10 hr, 52 rbi.
*I expect Ben Francisco to see regular time, with at least 1 start a week in place of Ibanez and giving Vic and Werth a breather sometimes too.

    Pitching:
    (ERA/WHIP)
    1. Roy Halladay- 22 w, 2.63/1.07, Cy Young
    2. Cole Hamels- 17 w, 3.13/1.11
    3. Joe Blanton- 13 w, 4.12/1.31
    4. JA Happ- 14 w, 3.96/1.29
    5. Jamie Moyer- 6 w, 5.33/1.48 (out of the rotation by some point in June, bullpen remainder of the season).
    6. Kyle Kendrick- 7 w, 4.59/1.40 (takes Moyer’s spot in rotation sometime in June).
    Closer/Brad Lidge- 32 sv, 5 blown saves, 4.37/1.35
    Setup/Ryan Madson- 9 sv, 2.98/1.22

Record: 98-64, 3-peat for National League pennant.

I love the 1st sentence in Andrew’s comment, “very reasonable predictions.”

    1. trs86

      Uh… well that’s something.

    2. ceetar

Well, if Hamels is going to get 17 wins, I’m going to say Pelfrey gets 18. And Santana will get 21 wins, but with a 2.2 ERA, beat the Phillies 4 times, and win the Cy Young.

    3. Mr North Jersey

He has 7 of the 8 everyday players driving in at least 70 rbi’s in 2010.

      1. ceetar

and them winning 5 more games in a much better division. Ha.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          :-)

      2. gategem

Playing half of their games in a bandbox with that lineup makes his projection very possible.

    4. metsfan4decades

LOL – I have a hard time taking anyone seriously who posts a pic of a bare chested guy with ‘Go Phillies’ on his chest.

Dude – put your shirt back on. David Wright you’re not….

I’ll be very surprised if Hamels reaches 17 or even Halladay 22. Do you know how hard it is to reach 22 wins in today’s game? And I don’t think he’s been realistic about that BP. You watch some of Halladay’s sure wins fall victim to that BP.

I can’t believe they still think their bench is improved. Well…I take that back. I guess anything is an improvement over 2009 – even Schneider.

      1. gategem

In both 2008 and 2009 Halladay pitched 9 complete games. If he follows suit, in a much weaker NL than pitching in the AL East, with the Phillies strong lineup, he could very well win 20 or more games.

        1. stickguy

he could. He could also start showing some signs of aging.

Also, in the NL, there should be fewer CGs since the pitcher has to hit. Who knows how many close games he might get lifted after 7 or 8 for a PH, Especially since some of those AL CGs were losses.

    5. GravediggerHebner

I’m not particularly offended or insulted by any of the individual statistical prognostications (although to be fair I haven’t “studied” them, just glanced at them) but what I think is dubious is the team record of 98-64 and here is why.

      Last year the Phillies went:
      8-10 against Atlanta;
      9-9 against Florida;
      15-3 against Washington; and
      12-6 against the Mets.

That’s 44-28, plus they were a combined 10-2 against the DBacks and the Cubs for a 54-30 mark and I just don’t think they’re going to approach that in 2010. You might notice that this 54-30 record is 24 games over .500, which is exactly what they finished at in 2009 by going 93-69.

So unless they destroy their remaining opponents at an even better rate than they did in 2009 they won’t be winning 98 games.

      1. Mr North Jersey

You did all that on a glance?

        You sir are the M-A-N!

        1. GravediggerHebner

No, I just glanced at the numbers for the individual players. The team W-L record I have been looking at for a while because I’ve been trying (and failing) to write my NL East predictions for Gonzo’s upcoming article.

That’s how I knew the Phillies were 24 games over .500 against the NL East plus AZ & CHC but just .500 against everybody else in 2009. I believe most if not all of those teams will be better than they were in 2009 so if the Phils are going to duplicate 93 wins, let alone get 98, they’re going to have to pick up some wins to make up for the ones they’re not going to get against those teams this year.

          1. Mr North Jersey

Ahhh I thought you looked all that up after the comment. I was about to dub you Grave runner since road runner was taken. ;-)

If you answered, “Not enough to determine that breaking camp with the Mets is worth throwing away at least one and probably two years of control and development time, especially in light of the fact that after being promoted to AA last year at age 19 he went 0-5 in 44.1 innings while surrendering 44 htis, 23 walks, and 22 earned runs and spent more than a month on the DL in the middle of the year!!!”, then you are correct.

If you answered, “Enough to save my job???”, then you are Jerry Manuel or Omar Minaya.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      lol

    2. Mr North Jersey

I’ve said b4 my concern is Mejia as recently as winterball was struggling with his control. It would be nice to get a little bigger sample size of him doing this.

    3. metsfan4decades

      Oh, man…..

    4. ceetar

This is the case with everyone. Their stats before they are good are bad. And stats can’t comfortably evaluate when that point is, that the pitcher has made the adjustments he needs to make to become a successful one.

      1. Mr North Jersey

Can I use that argument for Figgy?
