Reyes’ next major step will be playing in a minor-league game, perhaps Tuesday. “Why Reyes playing in a minor-league game rather than in a Spring Training game is better? ”We can bat him every inning,” Manuel said. “We can control that. The environment that he’ll be in has to be somewhat controlled.“

opening day. reyes. Book it.
Only 1 day, then a day off. And it is supposed to be warm and sunny Monday. So, not much risk there.

That would be great indeed, so long as he is ready. I would die if he hurt himself for trying to come back to soon.

With all the questions regarding the pitching staff, the health of Reyes is all the more crucial. He’s what makes this offense go and gives the team an amazing burst of energy. You’d just hate to see him get injured trying to rush back. But by all accounts, he’s feeling good and doing well. Looking forward to Opening Day!

There is no risk of that. It’s an energy and timing thing only.
He told Rich Coutino (sp?) that he’s been running at 100% since he’s gotten back.

The more I’m reading about Reyes this past week, the more I’m inclined to agree with you.
So….one down (or should I say up?) and one to go. Get Carlos back, I’ll be one happy camper.

Another reason why Reyes playing in a minor league game is better: if he’s not going to be ready for Opening Day, they can put him on the DL and back date his DL stint 10 days into spring training, but not if he plays in a real ST game. This way if he has to miss say 4 games they won’t have to play those first 4 games with a 24 man roster, something they did entirely too often last year. Then he can come back for game 5.
If they played him in an ST game tomorrow then wanted to DL him, he couldn’t come back until 4/13.
