The Gospel According to Heyman: Tejada Will Make Opening Day Roster

Around the Camps by Jon Heyman

• The Mets are hoping Jose Reyes can be back for the second week of the season. Tejada will make the team in the meantime. Carlos Beltran would like to come back sooner than May, but doctors are being cautious with him.

Lost in this is the part about Beltran also feeling ahead of schedule and wanting back in before May. That’s great news as well.

Agreed. Also nice to see soomeone from our terrible, depleted farm system (sarcasm) make the Major league roster.

I take anything Heyman says, being that he’s not at Mets camp, with a grain of salt. It’s almost like he’s choosing to run with one rumor over another. Opening Day still seems very possible for Reyes, and would they bother bringing Tejada up for 5 days?

Have we really heard much in the way of Beltran and the doctors? He should be just about ready to resume activity and from there we have a much better sense of his return date.

Anything Heyman says should be taken with a 150 pound jagged boulder of salt.

I will certainly understand if they choose to bring Reyes along slowly, but until such a decision is made public I will remain open to the possibility that he will be in the Opening Day starting lineup.

If Jose will not play in the first week of the season, they should just DL him retro back to 10 days before opening day (as they are allowed to). This way, he only loses 5 days in the beginning AND we can fill his roster spot with Tejada for those 5 days so as not to be a player short on the bench. Did enough of that and for too long last year.

Great news on Beltran. No setbacks, right on schedule.

Of course, the setbacks Beltran would have would be once he resumes baseball activity.

        Hey!

Agreed, which would also mean I THINK that he can only play in intrasquad games.

What does this do to Tejada’s value? I know it’s probably only a week of major league and maybe 10ABs, but will Tejada have more value as a prospect?

    1. trs86

      Depends.

      1. trs86

Could actually make it less if he performs poorly OR because it starts his arbitration clock.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Even with just a week of major games?

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Perhaps Tejada and Familia can bring Arroyo?

        1. GravediggerHebner

You might be onto something there.

I have no knowledge of the Reds minor leagues at all, but looking at their cbs sports SS depth chart, they have Orlando Cabrera who is 35 and on a 1 year plus 1 year option contract, then a 27 year old who batted .211 as a part time major leaguer last year, then a 26 year old UT and then a 24 year old cbs describes as “not a can’t miss prospect who was optioned to the minors after going 1 for 10 this spring.”

So I think it may be fair to say they’d be interested in a SS of the future.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Sounds like a good fit. But then as TRS has pointed out above, starting Tejada this season will start his arbitration clock, so it would be best if Tejada does not make the 25 man roster.

          2. GravediggerHebner

I’m not going to try and find it now but I do recall reading a report that the Mets were not worried about starting Tejada’s arb clock, a “team official” was quoted as saying “he’s not the type of player you worry about that.”

I agree with that philosophy. You worry about that with the close to can’t miss superstars such as Evan Longoria or Ryan Braun, not Ruben Tejada.

          3. DNDJohan aka kistics

I meant that the arb clock starting a year early won’t be a positive for the Reds.

          4. trs86

Yeah that is what I was implying.

          5. GravediggerHebner

I don’t think they should care much either. As you noted Kistics, it would be a week or so of service time. His arb clock won’t continue to tick if the Reds have him in the minors. It just won’t matter in the grand scheme.

  5. GravediggerHebner

Sounds like Reyes’ arm strength is good. According to Rich Coutinho:

Reyes hitting and working– played catch with Castillo–threw the ball from behind home plate over RF Fence on the fly-impressive!

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

      Gees…

    2. ceetar

I’m pretty sure I’d have a hard time throwing the ball from behind home plate to a RF’er positioned with Castillo At bat.

And my arm would hurt after one throw.

Maybe i need to go to Mets fantasy camp.

  6. stickguy

If Reyes can’t start, they almost have to DL him. Can’t start the short bench routine this early, can you?

it would likely mean that Jacobs goes though, if you have to keep Tejada and Reyes active. Not sure if he will accept even a short term minor’s assignment.

Only 1 week from now almost exactly, all these questions will have been answered, and Johan will be on the CIti mound dealing for real.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

And the Mets lineup will be facing Josh “I can kick the Mets ass anytime” Johnson.

Let’s just hope that Murphy catches a flyball next Monday afternoon. :)

Looks like A Sanchez has 2 Ks thru 1 inning.
