Marty Noble of MLB.com posted a nice article talking about the restrictions the Mets have put on Reyes at least for today as he gets ready for the upcoming season. He calls them the “Reyes Rules” and here they are.
- Reyes is to only bat (No playing the infield)
- Reyes can only run 90 feet, from the plate to first base
Reyes will be the only player to get a stop sign at 1st base. I wonder what tomorrows rules will be?

I still don’t understand why we’re taking it so slowly with him. Let him run the freaking bases and field..
He’s gotta be in better shape than me and I could go out there and do those things.

They can’t afford anymore setbacks with Reyes. They obviously would rather err on the side of being over-cautious and not regret looking like trying to rush him to make up for lost time I suppose.

still doesn’t make any sense. Let’s have him miss more games to make up for last year? silly. He’s healthy. put him out there.

I agree if he is healthy let him play. I guess the Mets don’t feel he is ready yet for that. Personally considering he wasn’t supposed to be here yet anyways I am ok if the Mets hold him back for one week if it means he will be that much sharper and ready to play. I still think though that it means so much to just see him take the field on Opening Day that the Mets just need to see him be able to play a full game before camp breaks and he will go North.

Clearly they’re motivated by the fear of putting him out there “too early” only to have him aggravate his hammy or something, at which point they will be drawn and quartered, roasted and thrown from tall buildings, not necessarily in that order, in the context of last year’s injury debacle.
There’s not a lot of precedent that I am aware of for a pro athlete in top form to literally sit on his couch for two weeks, then jump back into competition. They’re feeling their way through it cautiously, and after 2009 I can’t blame them.

Healthy in the sense that his thyroid is not going to swell up to the size of a goiter, yes. But, that doesn’t mean that he is ready to compete against other world class athletes. If they put him out there without any restrictions, he will go balls to the wall whether its ST or regular seasona nd he might injure himself. This shouldn’t even be worth an argument.

he might injure himself? playing baseball? That’s what he does! How is he going to injure himself? diving for a ball that he wasn’t quite up to speed to get to? That’s such a freak thing to worry about.

Cmon man, you can’t really be upset that they are being cautious with him. What would you prefer, that he is healthy for opening day and misses the next two months because of an injury caused by him not being in shape, or that he miss the first week and play the rest of the year uninhibited?

I am upset. He’s 100% physically healthy. The only thing keeping him down is fatigue and timing. And I don’t believe for a second that he’s at a greater risk of injury due to either one of those.

From what I heard on one of the SNY shows last night, they were speculating the only reason they won’t just let Reyes fly is no one – not Jerry, not the trainers, not Omar – will make that decision b/c god forbid if they do and he injures that hamstring again there will be no stomping the lynch mob the Met fans form…..

This may be old news but I saw Olney on TV this morning giving his “Top 5 lineups:”
5. Colorado
4. Tampa Bay
3. Philadelphia
2. New York Yankees
1. Minnesota
I’m just gonna assume that the Mets were # 6

It’s obvious Reyes has only one speed. ALL THE WAY. (assuming here) Demands his way into the field, hits a double, doesn’t stop at first.
