Breaking News: Murphy out 2 to 6 weeks

Minutes ago Eddie Coleman of WFAN reported on WFAN’s Mike’d Up that Daniel Murphy will be out 2 to 6 weeks with a grade 1 knee sprain. When asked by Mike Francesa if he believes that paves the way for Ike Davis to make the team Coleman replied he doesn’t believe so.

according to dave lennon on twitter
#Mets will not consider Ike Davis as short-term help in Murphy’s absence. Team wants him to develop.

    1. asod75

Funny they want Ike to develop, yet are seriously considering Mejia for the pen despite the fact he’s got less than 100 professional innings. Hmmm…

      1. rustyjr

        irony thy name is minaya

        1. gategem

More like desperation; aka fear of being fired.

      2. Mr North Jersey

        :-)

      3. Kingman 26

Mejia has 210 pro innings, plus winter ball….but he still belongs in AAA….

        1. asod75

Sorry don’t know where I got the less than 100. Did he have less than 100 last year?

          1. Kingman 26

About 43 in rookie ball in 07, 71 in rookie and A ball in 08, and about 95 between A and AA last year…and his 44 AA innings were pretty bad.

          2. gategem

When you’re blessed with talent as Mejia is, sometimes, a small, incremental change can produce incredible results.

  2. asod75

Hopefully Chris Carter makes the team now.

    1. rustyjr

      i second that

  3. metsfan4decades

Man, tough break for Daniel. He’s got to be one very disappointed young man right now.
I was really looking forward to him reaping some success for all his hard work this year. Get healthy soon, Murph.

    So….what now?
We still had a bench spot not named which Jacobs/Cat/Carter were vying for.
Now we have two spots to fill for the start of the season.

I’d like to see Carter get one spot. I wanted to see him get that 25th spot.
I bet they go with Jacobs for 1st base.
So do you think they go with those two for the start of the season with Cat being the odd man out?

I really don’t like Jacobs at first.

    1. rustyjr

no other candidates though – unless you count tatis

      1. asod75

Carter could play first, but I doubt they’d thrust him into a starting role. Jerry and Omar probably go with Jacobs and Cat, and send Carter to the minors since he’s got an option….

        1. rustyjr

i think carter gets the nod over frankie the cat myself

      2. metsfan4decades

Yeah, I know you’re right. And it’s a limited amount of time there. Was just thinking out loud.

Although Jacobs did make a very nice play at first today….

        1. rustyjr

jake has the most expreience there of the 3

          1. darknova306

He’s still not a good MLB player. I’d rather give Carter a chance, personally.

  4. asod75

I’d rather go with Carter and Cat, but that’s not the way the geniuses also known as the Mets brass will go…..

  5. resignreyes11

I would like to see Murphy get time at 2nd during his rehab. I know how bad that could turn out, I just don’t see him as a 1st baseman for any length of time. I think he is a good hitter and could fit at 2nd if he could learn to play the position at all.

    1. njstuckintx

      Welcome to TRDMB.

And yes, his value would increase dramatically if he could be the next “tatis type super sub”.

      1. njstuckintx

nevermind, I think I’ve seen you here before. no welcome for you! kidding.

your name throws me off, like someone resigning from their job, not re-signing. Like the Ghetto Boys, my mind is playing tricks on me.

        1. resignreyes11

reyes is contract is up after next season, 2011. we MUST lock him up asap.

          1. njstuckintx

            AMEN!

  6. rustyjr

as per the ny post – lidge to miss the start of the season due to shoulder pain – i like it !

    1. asod75

That’s their main weakness, perhaps their only real weakness (other than having crusty old Jamie Moyer in the rotation). Madson never does well in the closer’s role, and the rest of their guys in the pen are suspect.

      1. rustyjr

        their bench is suspect also

        1. asod75

Yes, it would be nice to see one of their big guns go down for a change and see how they deal with it…..

    2. Hazmet

Either Wheelhouse or Loud Mouths on SNY reported he received a cortizone shot in his elbow. hmmmmm.

      1. dirtysanchez

those shots are usually to get a player through the end of the season…not a good sign for them to have already given him one before the season started.

        1. Hazmet

Ditto that, interesting. Saw they also signed Mr. Fogg too.

  7. rustyjr

btw heyman tweeting that reyes will be back by the game 5

    1. metsfan4decades

Loud Mouths reporting Reyes to start the season on the DL.
So that means they’ll retro it back 10 days before opening day – misses the first 5 days of the season – which is 4 games, right?

    2. stickguy

what the hell for? In the MiL games, he looks better than anyone else on the team. And I don’t care if his timing is off, he is still light years better than Cora.

  8. Mr North Jersey

Doesn’t look like Carter will make the team. :-(

    All signs point to Jacobs.

    1. asod75

And you watch, Jerry will bat him cleanup on Opening Day for “balance”, to break up righties Wright and Bay. If this happens, he truly is a moron.

  9. tkfj

Apparently Jacobs is a “frontrunner” to start because he is a “veteran guy”. Have you ever seen such reasoning? He may be a veteran but what does that have to do with anything? If you are a veteran and arent very good, i.e. Jacobs, than what makes you more qualified to start at 1st. I want someone to help the team win, someone who can actually play first base for teams other than the Marlins and Royals. I know we don’t have many options but Jacobs should not be one. I hope he proves me wrong, but I’m pretty sure 1st base is going to be a black hole of suck.

    1. Kingman 26

      I agree.

Jacobs is horrible at every facet of the game except hitting an occasional homer off a mistake pitch.

      Give Carter a shot.

  10. metsfan4decades

    See above.
Loud Mouths reporting Reyes to start the season on the DL. They’ll retro it back 10 days before Opening Day so he misses first 5 days.

Not sure what that 5 days does for him but fine….

  11. Kingman 26

    Unreal; truly unreal.

Have to give Carter the chance now.

Anyone see MC’s latest post? (on a lighter note)

          Thx – Asod75.

I just got physically ill reading this from the post over there:

“The key to building an audience is authenticity, and having a strong connection with the reader”

          1. asod75

Just more smoke being blown out the arse there. I guess strong connection means you can’t disagree with anything said on the blog, or else “bye bye now.”

  13. CaseStreet

Tough break for Murphy, hope he gets better soon. Sorry guys, I gotta go with Jacobs here and Carter on the bench.

IMO, the situation (not Paulie) is similar to GMJ. Play them till the starters return in May. If they play well enough, which I can see happening, then you can flip them for something of value. If they stink it up, you still have Carter and Pagan as backup plans. Either way, Davis should not be considered.

I really think GMJ and Jacobs will do well enough. Jacobs returning to the division should see some improvement. Plus they are guys with something to prove like Shef and Frenchy last year.

    GMJ
    Castillo
    wright
    bay
    Jacobs
    frenchy
    barajas
    Cora

    1. asod75

I prefer Pagan over GMJ, but I can at least see your logic here. Maybe Matthews has a great month and you can pick up something of value. I’d like to see Pagan at the top of the lineup the first few games when Reyes is gone, though.

    2. saltygary

I with you here as well. Jacobs has been here before, give him a shot.

  14. dirtysanchez

Bottom line is we have to hope Jerry can spot a hot player and thus play the hot hand.

    1. Hazmet

I know we’ll be able to, the hot player will be the guy sitting after going 3 for 4 the day before…

    2. stickguy

jerry couldn’t find his ass with 2 hands and a flashlight.

  15. rustyjr

    Blanton strained a oblique

    1. stickguy

bummer for them. Are the beerleaguers starting to get nervous? Lidge, blanton, and halladay got knocked around today by the Jays.

Obvously I want the mets to do well, but if the Phils have the train derail, that will be a nice bonus.

    2. asod75

Blanton day-to-day with pulled fat. Cheeseburger/Pizza diet catching up to him….

  16. stickguy

Carter over jacobs is what I would do. But, I know what the mets will do. Tatis and jacobs platooning. Yuck city.

Better hope Davis starts out hot, because he might be getting the call real soon.

And I really can’t see why reyes needs more time to work out. Get him facing real pitching.

    1. Hazmet

Just caught Carter popping one off of Johnson on the replay, would love to see him get the shot.

Mr. Kiner last weekend was dumbfounded as to why the Mets wouldn’t have Reyes ready for the start of the season. He was like “the guys a physical specimen, he probably needs a couple of days to get ready and go”.

I understand their being cautious after last year but it does seem over cautious. If he’s back for the second series so be it. Not thrilled with it but it is what it is. Prevention, Recovery, and cover assery.

  17. oleosmirf

As much as Carter deserves to be on the team, he wont be.

Catalanatto will get the last spot on the bench and Jacobs will play the majority of the games at 1st with Tatis getting a couple of games too…

  18. trs86

It really depends. If it’s for 2 weeks I give Carter a shot. If it’s 6 weeks Jacobs has been a starter before and would be the safer choice in my opinion.

  19. trs86

      Oh, brother….

      I especially liked:

‘how can I make this story unique.’
      Answer:
      ‘You shouldn’t over think it.’

Well, it’s always gonna be unique if you’ve got an 8 man team, of a LHP listed as RHP, or don’t ever proof read.

Everyone makes mistakes. But when it becomes the norm, instead of the exception, then you lose credibility IMO.

      1. metsfan4decades

For example, this on his post game:

‘Jenrry Mejia pitched a perfect sixth inning, and likely would have escaped the seventh without allowing a run, had it not been for a dropped pop up in deep center field by Angel Pagan.’

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I definitely remember a sac fly with a run scored right before Pagan dropped the fly ball……

    3. asod75

What a massive tool. Just because he’s got a lot of page views and the backing of the Mets/SNY, doesn’t make his blog particularly good. It’s littered with mistakes, weak analysis and downright bad writing. TRDMB reigns supreme, and many other blogs also kick the crap out of his. I also like how he incorporated “mattcerrone.com” into his answer as well….
