Any mention of the other pitchers who are planning on putting in some work?

    1. metsfan4decades

All hands on deck not named KRod and Feliciano?

    2. Mr North Jersey

None that I could find sorry.

  2. metsfan4decades

Dang, forgot this was Johnson pitching today.

Ronnie says, ‘throw out his stats in ST. This young man can pitch’.

  3. metsfan4decades

LOL – Jose is allowed to go full bore to 1st base and ‘casually’ into second.

So they show him at bat, hits a ball to the OF which I guess looked like it was gonna be one base (couldn’t tell b/c they’re only showing Jose).
He rounds 1st, takes off like a bat out of hell for 2nd and slides head first to make it.

    1. metsfan4decades

And according to Ronnie, that’s Jose making a statement like:
‘I hear you all, but I want to start opening day. Take that’.

    2. njstuckintx

      GooD!

      Get him in there already!

    3. ceetar

But people think he’s more likely to get injured in a ‘real’ game? Come on! I understand you need more than 5 games to get your timing refined, but he should be there Opening Day.

      1. ceetar

StevePopper: There ARE rules! Reyes trots to shortstop for 4th inning and he is pulled – supposed to only play 3 innings.

An important thing to note here is how INCREDIBLY pissed off your star SS is going to be if he’s not in the lineup Opening Day.

        1. metsfan4decades

From everything that is being reported – how Reyes feels, what he looks like – I’m inclined to think he’s about as ready as he’s gonna be.
His bat timing might be off but what is another 5 days gonna do for that?

          1. ceetar

He’s also making contact, not striking out. So even if his timing is a bit off, his speed will make up for it, get a couple infield hits, wreck havoc, etc.

  4. metsfan4decades

Keith and Gary think Figgy deserves to be on this team.
Keith said he’s one of the good guys in the clubhouse. Always cheerful, always available to the press, always willing to lend whatever is necessary. A consummate professional.

    1. trs86

Always whining…. Oh well I guess it’s ok to occasionally disagree with Keith and Gary. Of course it also seemed like they wanted Mejia up as well.

      1. metsfan4decades

Or maybe they’re even more disallusioned with what they’re seeing pitching out of the pen?
        Just a thought….

I’m not as worried about that pen as I am the SP.

        1. trs86

Even if they are they can’t think that Figgy is an actual solution to those troubles.

          1. metsfan4decades

Or, to start the season, want him in the BP, until they get a feel for how deep the 4 behind Johan are likely to go in games?

          2. trs86

There are plenty of other options for mop up long relievers though.

          3. metsfan4decades

Well, Misch was one but they just option him. So I have no idea what their plan is.

  5. metsfan4decades

    ‘And it’s OUTTA Here’

Jason Bay with a solo HR.

    1. njstuckintx

      w00t w00t!

  6. metsfan4decades

Misch has cleared waivers, Gary reports.

    1. trs86

      Good.

      1. metsfan4decades

Yup. The more depth down there, the better right now.

  7. metsfan4decades

Figgy only pitched 3 innings. scoreless innings.
Valdes in there now for the 4th.

    1. metsgirl31

Gary, Keith and Ron appear to be solidly on the Figgy bandwagon.

      1. metsfan4decades

Yes, that was apparent. From the way they were talking – about decisions in the FO, etc., they don’t appear to have any idea what the decisions will be on who goes north either.

        1. trs86

Like I said based on what I have heard they are also very much for bringing Mejia up too. So are a lot of beat reporters.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

they must be seeing what we’re missing out.

          2. trs86

Or they are in the entertainment business and it makes a bigger story than some no name.

  8. trs86

Dag-gone it. Even I at this point have to say might as well give a spot to Figgy. While he has very little talent I guess he deserves it as much as some of the other bp guys. Man I hope I am wrong about him being what he always has been, crap.

    1. ceetar

Hey, if he gives us a good dozen innings in April and ends up gettng replaced, contributes! We’ll mail him his WS ring in Japan.

    2. metsfan4decades

      Ha!
Really, it’s all about who gives us the best chance to win the most games here in April. After a month, they can make any necessary changes accordingly.

Just field the best damn team we can, given what we’ve got right now.

      1. trs86

My realistic expectations may go down tremendously if Figgy is one of the best we got.

        1. metsfan4decades

Well, here’s hoping he’s just insurance until MOP show what they’ve got for the start of the season.

          1. trs86

Thing is 4D if any of MOP explode it’s not like Figgy is really insurance. We would still be in a big pile of crap.

          2. metsfan4decades

Well, I’m not saying permanent solution.

          3. trs86

I know. I need to just accept it that Figgy will have a role. I just don’t like him.

  9. metsfan4decades

    Another ‘Its OUTTA here’

DWright with an opposite field solo HR.
    2-0 Mets.

So far Figgy/Valdes out pitching Johnson.

  10. metsfan4decades

LOL – Keith mad b/c someone just threw back DWright’s HR ball. Apparently, it was a guy with a Marlin shirt on.

  11. trs86

Valdez’s innings have been limited of course but his very small sample size is 3.2 innings 1 hit 3Ks 0 walks.

    1. metsfan4decades

FWICG, if he doesn’t make the team, it’s not like he’ll be depth in triple A. We have to send him back to the Mexican league as he’s on loan?

      1. trs86

Right. Unless they purchase his contract from that league and he agrees to a minor league deal.

  12. trs86

I guess it is for sure clear that Figgy is not the #5 as I would think he would have went longer. So looks like as reported it’s 100% Niese’s job. Sigh….

    1. metsfan4decades

You didn’t want Niese to be the #5?

Initially, I wanted Taka2. I still don’t think it’s a bad idea. But beyond him, Niese would be it, IMO.

      1. trs86

No doubt that I wanted it to be Taka with Niese in the minors and more guys in the pen. Taka does not help the pen at all.

        1. metsfan4decades

O.K. – that’s was my mindset too all spring.

          1. metsfan4decades

And to be clear, I was NEVER advocating that 5th spot go to Figgy. I’m on the fence about a BP spot though.

          2. trs86

I know you were not 4D. I just let my emotion take over on guys like Figgy sometimes. I just don’t get why some like him so much.

          3. metsfan4decades

Probably b/c those who are going to be the starters are not looking so good this spring…..

          4. trs86

Yeah I understand that part but it’s Nelson Figgy Figueroa.

  13. metsfan4decades

Parnell walks the pitcher, but aside from that, Keith liked what he saw from Parnell this inning. Throwing high heat and being effective.

So far, this game is what I was hoping to see pitching these last games before opening day.

  14. metsfan4decades

    Kevin interviewing Reyes:

    - I think I’m seeing the ball better now. I’m ready.
    - They told him not to slide on the base paths today. He decided to do it anyway to prove he’s ready to go.
    - Nothing to worry about with my legs.
    - Just have to get my timing back, 100%
    - Thyroid being monitored every Monday – blood test. Everyone is better and better.

With that, per Gary ‘Chris Carter just threw his hat back in the ring with a solo HR’.

    1. ceetar

Glad he said he’s ready. Mets now risk another “not on the same page” report if they don’t start him. Not that they care about that stuff.

    2. metsfan4decades

hahaha – discussing Reyes, what’s left to see?
Keith: ‘let the horse out of the corral’.

  15. trs86

    GO CARTER!!!!

    1. trs86

      Solo HR. 4HR in 28 AB’s.
Murphy headed for MRI. Mets please take Carter as your 1B.

      1. metsfan4decades

        What you said….

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

How is he defensively? I heard he’s not that bad… but haven’t actually seen him play at 1B.

        1. trs86

Does it really matter? His competition is Jacobs and Cat.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I’m sure it does if Jacobs and Carter are competing for Murphy’s spot IF Murphy goes on DL.

          2. trs86

My point is they are most likely all equally bad.

  16. Mr North Jersey

    “The Animal” Goes deep!

    Nice Gary.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Did he hit it against JJ?

      1. trs86

Yes all 3 were off JJ.

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

I don’t understand the logic in pitching JJ against the Mets.

It gives the Mets hitters better look at him for next Monday’s game.

          1. ceetar

Should’ve started Reyes. would’ve gotten him even more of a ‘jump’ on his timing for Opening Day.

          2. metsfan4decades

Here’s hoping that gives Johan and the Mets the edge Monday.

          3. trs86

If I remember they have never beaten him.

          4. DNDJohan aka kistics

Unless it’s the Marlin’s plan to confuse the Mets hitters by allowing them to see JJ purposely pitching badly.

  17. metsfan4decades

Mejia in now in the top of the 6th.

Oh, Kevin interviewing Wally Backman in the backfield.

    1. ceetar

Is it the Citi Field replica backfield? portends of things to come..

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL.

He’s talking about teams today more or less not putting enough emphasis on the fundies. He said back in his day, especially with Davey, it was always an important part of the game.

Best of luck to Wally in Brooklyn this year.

  18. trs86

Maybe not for the entire year but right now it would be hard for them to decide NOT to bring up Mejia. We all know why they SHOULD NOT but I should have saved my money and not bought the 50 inch tv too. I should not go to Vegas and gamble my money away. I should not spend time on here when I should be working. But you know it has to be tempting to bring him up.

    1. metsfan4decades

It’s just such a small sample size so far.
On that note, 1-2-3 inning for him.

Ronnie said he’s got all the pitches he needs to get batters out. ‘It’s very enticing to bring him north’.

Gary speculates it’s almost wasting him since he’s got 4 pitches, instead of developing him as a starter.

Then they were interrupted as Peterson? loses the ball in the OF and Jacobs gets a double out of it.

      1. trs86

Then Darling compared him to Wainwright.

  19. DNDJohan aka kistics

Did Mejia face the legit Marlins hitters?

    1. trs86

      Mostly no.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        Who did he face?

        1. trs86

          Maybin, Hanley and Lamb.

          1. DNDJohan aka kistics

            That’s not too bad.

          2. trs86

That’s why I said MOSTLY no. LOL.

          3. ceetar

Hmm? he faced Hanley. that’s about it. Maybin’s a solid middle of their lineup guy no?

          4. trs86

            .250 .318 .409 .727

          5. DNDJohan aka kistics

But Maybin will be on the 25 man roster for the Fishes, no?

          6. ceetar

I didn’t mean statistically, I mean physically, in the middle of the lineup. solidly on the roster and etc.

  20. trs86

    8 dominant pitches from Mejia.

    1. metsgirl31

I can see why it is hard to ignore at this point.

  21. trs86

OK so are we going to jump on Darling too about comparing Mejia to Wainwright?

  22. DNDJohan aka kistics

Is there a reason why Barajas was left off the lineup?

    1. metsfan4decades

Not any reason that I know of….

  23. DNDJohan aka kistics

Do you think GRK are friends or just pretends?

    1. metsfan4decades

LOL. My impression? They all get along good but I wouldn’t say they socialize much outside of the job – like buddy, buddies.

  24. metsfan4decades

Well, Mejia in trouble this inning.

  25. Mr North Jersey

    -SIGH Pagan

  26. trs86

Shoddy defense looks to have lead to the trouble.

As for Pagan, looked like he had it and lost it in the sun. Has happen to the Marlins today too.

    1. metsfan4decades

He had a glove on it. Don’t know what happened there.

  27. metsfan4decades

    Jeeze, Pagan….

  28. Mr North Jersey

FYI whatever you do stay away from 1050 ESPN. Kay is killing the Mets today I will spare you the details.

    1. njstuckintx

      How is this breaking news?

      1. Mr North Jersey

It isn’t consider it a “Kay Alert”.

        1. njstuckintx

          Heh. Kay-dar?

He usually does bash the Mets, the Kay-lown that he is.

    2. metsfan4decades

I’ve never listened to him. MF on WFAN is more than enough in that department.

    3. DNDJohan aka kistics

He always kills the Mets. He has personal hatred towards the Mets organization. One professional journalist.

  29. metsfan4decades

Marlins defense cost them an error there.
    yeah, good for us.
    6-3 NY

  30. trs86

Taka, Taka, Taka, never-mind they are not listening.

  31. trs86

This is just insane. Taka is one of our better guys and he will only be used when they fall behind as a mop up man.

    1. metsfan4decades

      I’m in agreement.
Taka starts as 5th guy in April. Niese down to triple A. He’ll be back soon enough.

    2. DNDJohan aka kistics

Well if he pitches well, I’m sure he’ll get his share of quality innings.

      1. trs86

Really? When? You mean if he pitches well as a mop up guy then he will move up to 6th inning?

        1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Wasn’t that the case for a lot of the RPs last season? Parnell was inserted in less important spot and as the season progressed, he was put in more critical spot. Same was true for Stokes too.

So what’s the difference between them and Taka?

Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather see Taka be the #5 SP over Niese.

          1. trs86

Difference in them and Taka is Taka has incredible control and there is a hole in the rotation.

          2. DNDJohan aka kistics

I agree with you that he should be part of the rotation. But his bullpen role right now is what it is. And it sucks that he’s being utilized in such a way. What I’m saying is that even with that role, I believe Taka will get quality innings once he pitches well.

  32. metsfan4decades

Gary says the unofficial report is Maine pitches the second game against Marlins, Pelf slides into the 4th game slot against Nats.
Mindset is Maine has pitched better against the Marlins than Pelf has. Pelf has never done well against the Marlins.

  33. metsfan4decades

I don’t care what Adam Rubin says, I love these commercials/slogans the Mets have for this year.
Johan with ‘PROVE WE’RE BACK’. He looks like he means business.

I love the Reyes with a bat on his shoulder ‘We Believe In Getting Dirty’.

Rubin’s taunting was come mid season, if they’re doing poorly, the media will have a field day with ‘We Believe In Comebacks’ and all the rest.

    Bah….

    1. ceetar

I don’t care about Adam Rubin either. Not a huge fan. Although his tweet taht the Museum will be opening 10:40 is nice.

      I like the ads too.

  34. metsfan4decades

Nice double play started by Tejada there to end the game.
Pedro picking up the save there.

THIS is what I’m hoping to see come April.

  35. trs86

Hey everyone should feel better now. BP is GREAT (today).

    1. metsfan4decades

LOL – you’ve got that right.
Even Parnell managed a good showing.

    2. Mr North Jersey

I will feel better when I see it done in the regular season.

      1. trs86

Yeah, so would I. Really don’t put much stock in ST good or bad.

        1. Mr North Jersey

          agreed

  36. DNDJohan aka kistics

I really hate the idea of using Feliciano as the 8th inning guy.

I mean if Utley, Howard and Ibanez are due 8th inning, then sure why not. But to peg him as the 8th inning guy is not a good idea IMO.

    1. trs86

DND, how many times is the game on the line in the 6th inning with 3 lefties up? IF Feliciano is the best guy for the 8th inning then he’s the best guy. Not saying he can’t pitch before the 8th inning but basically treat him as the 2nd best reliever in the pen regardless of his hand.

      1. ceetar

Don’t trust Manuel to do that.

If it’s a huge deal in the 7th, then sure, bring in Feliciano. Ideally though is starter goes 7, through the order 3 times, Pedro gets the 8th and big lefties, and K-Rod closes it out.

      2. DNDJohan aka kistics

I’m not disputing the fact Feliciano is 2nd most valuable BP guy. What I’m afraid of is when Jerry decides to peg Feliciano as THE 8th inning guy regardless of who’s coming up at 6th/7th/8th inning, kinda like what Putz role was last year.

Isn’t that what it means to THE 8th inning guy?
