According to a report yesterday by Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, Ryan Garko was placed on waivers by the Mariners. He did not hit very well in spring training and is not known for his defensive abilities. However, he is still young and would make a decent platoon partner for either Jacobs or Carter. During the off-season I did not see that much of a need for Garko, however with Murphy out up to 6 weeks how could we not be interested?

Didn’t he sign for something like 750k?

can’t hit, and can’t field. What’s not to love!
But, how much do you want to invest on a short term gig? Because I don’t expect the platooning to last long. Either murph comes back, or Davis smokes the ball in AAA and ends up with the job.
besides, Omar already has his spoon buddy tatis. Is garko really going to do anything tatis isn’t?

I honestly think Carter/Jacobs combo will be sufficient enough to hold the fort till Murphy comes back. It’s not like Murphy was that much better offensively than those two. I just wish that Omar/Jerry don’t pick Cat over Carter…

If Carter doesn’t make the team now, he’s going to wonder what he’s got to do to stick in the majors. I’ve seen him in Red Sox camp the last few years, and the kid can hit. The Red Sox were just so deep, they couldn’t find a spot for him. Got to be frustrating as hell for him. And I’d prefer Garko over Tatis, big time.

Garko is one season removed from .285 .362 .464 .826 and is a career .279 .351 .441 .792
So if he can’t hit then what are we saying about Murphy, Carter and Jacobs?

2009 doesn’t count?

I said one season removed but I am sure it does count in his career averages. Does 2009 count for Murphy, Jacobs and Carter?

How much worse than Jacobs or Tatis can he be?
Personally I think Cat has done enough to deserve a shot even though I really was hoping for Carter to get a shot.
Right now he is a bottom of the barrell guy he may be better he may not.
I dont think I really care who gets it if I have to choose between Garko Jacobs and Tatis.

IF you went by splits you get this
.313 .392 .495 .887 from Garko
.263 .325 .505 .830 from Jacobs
I would say that would be ok.

Yes, saying if you platooned the two you would get a decent option. Garko should not cost much if anything.

I am sure if he is cheap the Mets will definitely give him a look see.

I believe Jacobs strength only is Homeruns.

Again I really have no preference neither do anything for me. If Garko makes the team over Jacobs whatever.

Personally, I don’t understand why Carter has never been given a proper shot. Just for argument’s sake, here are the minor-league splits for Carter, Garko, Murph and Jacobs.
Carter: .306, .380, .510
Garko: .293, 379, .488
Jacobs: .287, .344, .471
Murphy: .290, .352, .444
I believe Carter would produce if given the chance. He’s just never gotten it, partly due to defense I’m sure, but mainly because he’s been blocked in other organizations.

although if he were on any other organization you would think he would have been called up before.

The Mets have Jacobs, Tatis, Carter and Davis?
why do they need Garko again?
