2010 “One’s to Watch” Part 1

I’m not going to get bogged down in “how good will the Mets be?” or “how bad will the Mets be?” but regardless of how the season goes there are a few prospects outside of the names many of us already know that I think are worth watching in 2010. The Mets haven’t officially announced what rosters will look like so “level” is based on an educated guess and may not be accurate. I will be doing this in a few “parts” 4puello-stance players at a time in no particular order-

#1. Cesar Puello- Puello is a 19 year old OF (today is actually his birthday) from La Romana, DR,  who played last year for Kingsport where he put up a line of .296/.373/.423-.796 as an 18 year old. Puello is a broad shouldered/barrel chested 6’2 player with good present day pop in his bat which likely means more power is on the way. Puello has good speed and a plus arm. Puello likely would have played last season as an 18 year old in the SAL if not for a wrist injury that had him start the season later than expected. I rank Puello as our #3 best OF prospect in the system and certainly a player to watch in 2010- Expected 2010 role- Starting RF in Savannah

#2 Nick Santomauro- Santomauro is a 21 year old OF drafted in the 10th round this past year from Dartmouth. He’s got good size at 6’3 205 and flashed potential plus power for the Cyclones putting up a line of 241/368/441 (keep in mind that the NY/PENN is an extreme pitchers league and Keyspan Park also is a strong pitchers environment). Santomauro being from an Ivy League school hasn’t faced the level of competition of some other players.  Expected 2010 role- Starting RF St. Lucie

#3 Darrell Ceciliani- Ceciliani is a 19 year old CF drafted in the 4th round by the Mets this past year from Columbia Basin CC. Ceciliani has garnered comparison’s to Johnny Damon (early career Damon before the power explosion) of the Tigers and Jacoby Ellsbury offensively. He is 6’1 185 pounds with plus speed and a legit CF glove and solid arm. Ceciliani’s overall line isn’t all that impressive 234/313/310 but he was set back by an undiagnosed case of asthma which caused him to miss 2 weeks of the season and in July showed what he can do hitting 303/361/447 with 8 steals. He also played a low level of CC ball and people need to be patient with the young OF. Expected 2010 role-  Starting CF Savannah

#4 Armando Rodriguez- Rodriguez is a 22 year old pitcher hailing from San Cristobal, DR. He is listed at 6’2 185 but appears much larger than that now probably pushing 210-220 pounds. Rodriguez features a FILTHY FB which sits 92-94 and touches as high as 97 with the makings of 2 potential plus breaking pitches. Rodriguez was an older signing (19 years old when he signed in 2007) so his age (22) shouldn’t turn too many people off. Last year Rodriguez pitched 62.2 innings 44 hits 29 walks 60 k’s with a 1.17 whip and 2.74 era Expected 2010 role- Rotation at Savannah

It is a good post but why are we not spacing them at least 30 minutes apart?

Sorry, i tried setting it for 11:34, I thought I did… any way to take my post down? I apologize for this.

NO, it’s fine. Not a big deal at all.

If you ever find that you need to change the time a post is displayed after you posted it. You can simply go back as if to edit your post and where it shows when a post is published simply click on the edit and you can reschedule the time.

On another note I noticed that FVF has no way to preview a post which sucks.

Mr North Jersey thanks for the tip

Yeah a lot of issues to work out still.

Your point on rescheduling, don’t do that if you have already posted it. It causes some issues with feeds because the link will be broken.

We have not been using the workspace so sometimes it’s hard to tell what is coming up.

Good stuff on some very young, possible potential ML prospects.

I followed the players that the Mets drafted in 2009 so I’m more familiar with them than I am with the average Met minor leaguer. Santomauro and Ceciliani were fun to follow, they both had their moments. I’ve never heard of Rodriguez but based on what you wrote about him here I’ll be paying attention now.

Good stuff. I look forward to this series continuing.

So since my basement flooded (again) late Tuesday afternoon what have I missed (besides Murphy going on the DL and the starting rotation order being Santana, Maine, Niese, Pelfrey, Perez)?

2 words Grave Optimism and realism. :-)

Other than that you haven’t missed much at all.

      Sorry 2 hear about basement.

I feel your pain. Have had pumps going continuously in my basement now for 6 weeks. If it would ever stop raining for more than 2 days in a row, hopefully the water levels in this area will decrease. Sigh….

Well, officially Reyes is on the DL too and will miss the first 5 days of the season.

Thanks MF4D and Mr. NJ for the updates and the concern. Now we know where to install pumps to avoid this in the future so it was a “learning flood.” :-)

I like the conservative approach to Reyes so glad to hear he’s on the DL too. I’m sure by now someone must’ve already made this comment but I have to wonder if Murphy will have a job when he comes back. It would seem that if he doesn’t, that will mean the team has done well in his absence so at least at this stage that’s what I’m rooting for.

I haven’t read the story yet, but just remember today’s date and how it’s celebrated.

Ah, you may be right. Reading some of the comments now. Oh well.
