If you haven’t heard Minaya held a press conference today officially announcing that Jose Reyes will not be coming North for Opening but instead going on the dl. When asked when Reyes will be back he said “there’s just no date on when he will come back“. To listen to the entire interview check out Brian Costa of The Star-Ledger who also has audio of Jose Reyes reaction.

I’m fine with the no date. Do not put out some unrealistic date and then have to go back on it when he’s not ready for it.

‘General manager Omar Minaya said the decision was based more on baseball factors than on medical concerns.’
What exactly, does that mean?
I guess he was trying to say it would be rushing him given the fact he hasn’t been in the full ST?
Splitting hairs.
Either way, I’d be fine with this is I wasn’t hearing ‘we don’t know when he’ll be back’….

He thinks he’s ready. why wouldn’t he be ready? Are they going to wait until he has a minor league average of .350 or something? why? Aggrevating.

I am guessing that “baseball factors” means something along the lines of “this guy hasn’t played against Major League competition since May 2009, we want to be absolutely sure he’s ready to go.”
So far he hasn’t even fully participated without restriction in a minor league game. That sums it up nicely for me. He needs to at the very least participate without restrictions (and succeed in doing so and recovering from doing so) before I clear him for ML play.

The guy dove headfirst in second base, was tearing around the bases, and tried to take the field in the 4th inning past his 3rd inning restrictions. He can play. Off day on Tuesday for recovery anyway, and you can even give him off Thursday after Wednesday if that’s the way you want to do it.

The fact remains that all he’s done since May 2009 is play partial games against minor leaguers under special rules and restrictions. And he’s only been doing even that for a couple days.

well, I didn’t agree with the restrictions either. I would’ve put him out for the full minor league games, especially the second one.

Fair point. It is in part those very restrictions which have lead to their thinking he’s not ready.

This is dumb. Not trying to be snarky (OK, yes I am), but if they wanted him for the whole season, he would be playing OD!
Actually, if it is NOT for medical reasons, then it makes even less sense. BB reasons means he just isn’t in mid season form or some such. So, maybe he will be a little rusty, or his timeing off.
But, my opinion is, a rusty out of time Ryees (say, at 70% of his peak) is still way the hell better than Cora at SS for 4 games.
What’s the worst that can happen, he sturggles a little at the plate? What exactly do you think Cora is going to do?

Hard to argue with that logic.
Did you listen to Reyes? There was absolutely no doubt in my mind he’s disappointed – but is giving the company line.

4/1/2010-4:13pm at 4:13 pm (UTC -4)
Agree, Reyes is upset, and possibly pissed, about this.
There is obviously no risk to him physically.
Given taht he’s going to be doing the EXACT same thing (swinging at pitches, fielding, etc) at the Major league level as in PSL, given a little bit faster paced, why not just start him? Maybe he draws a walk and steals a base, maybe the pitchers groove a bad pitch and he hits it anyway. Maybe he just makes contact and beats out an infield single. He’s got value, and it pisses me off that they’re not starting him.

not as much as the reason given for switching the rotation though. *vomit*

Well, you have a valid point about what’s the difference in playing the minor league games vs. major league games.
Not unless he’s still going to be under limited type play restrictions (only playing half a game, playing every other day?) for awhile and they didn’t want to try that with the ML club. The fans would probably revolt.
Either way they do this, when he gets back I want to see him play full games, period. So if they weren’t willing to do that come Monday, maybe it is better they wait.

If anyone thinks that I’m being too negative or critical about the Mets, just turn on WFAN right now and you’ll realize compared to these callers I’m riding a Mets unicorn with Mets sunshine coming out of my butt and Mets rainbows coming out of the unicorn’s butt, playing happy Mets music and thinking happy Mets thoughts while my Mets unicorn takes me to my Mets happiness cloud.

Reading about them across the blogsphere is enough for me.

I’m concerned about neck injuries to the pitching staff as they are always turning their heads to watch balls flying out of the yard. The trainers will once again be earning their pay checks.

MF is speaking with Omar about the bullpen. MF says basically “other than KRod and Feliciano, who do we think will be in the pen?” And Omar mentioned Green, Takahashi and Nieve by name, then said something like there are 7 guys for 5 spots and we have to factor in many things like options.
MF then asked about Mejia and Omar said basically “he’s done enough to make the team, now we have to decide if that’s the best thing to do.”

4/1/2010-4:53pm at 4:53 pm (UTC -4)
I think the bullpen will end up shaking out okay. May take a handful of Buffalo-New York transactions to figure out which guys will stick, but I don’t know what more Omar could’ve done to address it. He signed a lot of guys.

4/1/2010-4:53pm at 4:53 pm (UTC -4)
Unsolicited Omar said “Catalanotto has done a good job.” He also said “some guys you have to decide about thinking that if you cut them now, they won’t be around.” Also added “Carter has options.”
So I’m reading between the lines that if there is a competition between Carter and Cat for a ML spot, Cat is getting it.

Sigh….I really wanted to see Carter.
He’s probably thinking if it doesn’t happen now, if he can’t break in with this team, than when? The way we’re going so far, it was probably his best shot.

4/1/2010-7:10pm at 7:10 pm (UTC -4)
That sucks, but we knew it would probably happen. Losing Frank Catalanotto wouldn’t have been a big deal. Carter probably can’t wait until he is out of options, then he can go sign with Pittsburgh or Kansas City and show he can hit, because I know he can.

Omar: “I thought we needed a slugger, a catcher, and a starting pitcher and we did try to get one, but the prices went higher than we wanted to spend on some of them (Sheets specifically) and others just chose to go elsewhere (Pineiro specifically).”
Any SP that he would’ve signed would’ve been in the rotation instead of Niese, MOP was in regardless.

Grave….you’re killing me. LOL.
I’m torturing myself right now with Daily News Live.
Lead story starting up was: ‘Is the 2010 Mets starting off right where they left off in 2009′?
Consensus of all, as far as they think the fans concerned – is yes.
Three position players already on the DL and the season didn’t start yet.
Ouch.

Can they please stop saying “…having Reyes for the whole season…” If he’s not eligible for the first 5 games and they “don’t know when he’ll be back” then he already isn’t there for the WHOLE season.

I cannot help but laugh at this below from MLBTR:
Despite not spending a single dollar on a major league free agent this year, the Marlins’ spending has satisfied league officials, according to Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post.
************************************
And some have the Marlins finishing ahead of the Mets this year?
Just goes to show you, even if you have the money you had better know how to spend that money. Whether on draft signings, development, best scouts, coaches, managers – well, you get the idea.

O.K., even bigger chuckle on this from MLBTR:
Phillies Looking At Tim Redding.
But ends with ‘Given the lack of positive reports delivered by Mariners’ scouts who watched Redding pitch, Philadelphia could be better off sticking with Kendrick.’
And we think we’ve got problems with our pitching?
If our pitching might do us in this year, Philly can’t be far behind.
