Dang, forgot this game started at noon instead of 1pm.

What’s with my office scheduling a meeting/telecon at noon? Don’t they know I’m trying to watch a ball game?

    Crap!@!@!@@!!@!

According to Adam Rubin: Jose Reyes re-injures his Hamstring during the morning workout.

    1. trs86

Hmmm, what is today? I can’t remember.

      1. DNDJohan aka kistics

        Made you look twice, no?

        1. trs86

Nope, LOL. I spend too much time watching all the sportspyder and twitter reports. Sad life.

          1. rustyjr

Lol mr north jerseys went over like a lead balloon I heard the wright trade and giggled

          2. Mr North Jersey

Putting Cellaphane over the toilet, short sheeting the bed, fake spider hanging from the door frame, that’s funny. Causing multiple heart attacks, not funny.

      1. metsgirl31

        Agree

    3. metsfan4decades

Are you trying to give me a heart attack?

      Good one – LOL.

      1. rustyjr

Redd fox. Was a mets fan ?

    4. metsgirl31

Don’t even joke about this. As Michael Scott (Steve Carell’s character on The Office) says “i’m not superstitious, i’m just a little “stitious”.”

    5. DNDJohan aka kistics

Sorry guys. I would have a heart attack if I saw this too :)

  3. metsfan4decades

Nice bunt for a run play there.

  4. rustyjr

Over / under on how Many times Jerry has castillio sa. Bunt this season ?

      1. rustyjr

        I’ll take the over

    2. ceetar

won’t be that high. If he continues to try to give away outs and ballgames, he won’t be around long.

How many times will be put extra guys on base because he’s scared to face them? He did that so many times last year I’m already dreading it. He’s not made a pitching change of a struggling pitcher because he’s afraid the other manager will pinch hit. This is the guy we didn’t fire in the offseasons past..

  5. metsfan4decades

    Oh, for crying out loud…..

  6. DNDJohan aka kistics

The Nats have good nucleus of young players. Zimmerman (still 25!!!), Desmond and Morgan. With their young pitching prospects (and this year’s #1 pick), they should be pretty good in 2-3 years kinda like the Rays.

    1. DNDJohan aka kistics

Just looked at Desmond’s minor league stats and he had heck of a season in the minors last year.

      AAA-AA 348AB .330 .401 .878 115 hits 24 2Bs and 21 SBs.

  7. metsfan4decades

    woo-hoo!
Jacobs making a case for himself.

    1. Mr North Jersey

      wfan online is way behind

      1. metsfan4decades

I always found that to be the case too when I’m using the online WFAN feed.

  8. Mr North Jersey

They just made the hr call

  9. metsfan4decades

    Crap.
I know the Mets have hit a lot of HRs. With that last one, how many have they given up? Seems like just as many.

    1. trs86

Maine still looking sharp though. 3 hits 2 runs through 4 innings. Those Nats guys in the middle are HR hitters for sure.

      1. metsfan4decades

Oh yeah, not complaining about Maine’s performance so far today. Much improved….

Just seems like our pitchers, when they’re giving up hits, are the over the wall variety lately….

  10. metsfan4decades

    Kevin B. interviewing Figgy…
Asking him how it would feel if, for the first time, he’ll be on a ML roster come opening day.
He asks him how that would feel, has he thought about it?

I would think he’s been thinking about that for about 15 years…..

    1. trs86

Man I thought as long as the interview has been he was giving his farewell speech.

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL.

He obviously has his fingers crossed.

Gary commented that ‘there are certainly some guys we rooted for more than others and Nelson is certainly one of them’.

    2. Mr North Jersey

I missed the beginning caught it where they talk about the Caribbean World Series.

  11. Mr North Jersey

Darling just showed why he is a great analyst. Talking about the feeling of standing on that foul line on Opening Day.

  12. metsfan4decades

    Cut the music! LOL.

They thought that was an inning ending double play but the ump called him safe at 2nd.

  13. metsfan4decades

And on that double play – which clearly was a double play…Ronnie comments that Tejada should have been called out just for not sliding. Don’t know what he was thinking.

    1. trs86

Beltran’s presence even felt when he’s not in the lineup.

  14. asod75

Last night, I began to have a good feeling about Jacobs for some reason. I know, he was horrible last year and his OBP is pretty horrendous. But maybe, just maybe, we catch lightning in a bottle and the guy goes on a hot streak early on. You gotta think this could be his last chance at starting in the major leagues, so he’s got to make the most of it. One of my reservations is having him and Francoeur in the lineup at the same time. That’s an awful lot of quick outs when they’re not going well. Regardless, hope Ike begins the season on a tear and is eventually up sometime this season. He’s the future at first….

    1. trs86

I have no problem with him in a platoon there for now. His numbers against RH pitchers are very decent. He should never face a LHP.

      1. ceetar

as long as taht platoon isn’t Tatis.

        1. trs86

Bias aside Ceetar, Tatis has shown he can play a decent 1B and has good numbers vs. LHP. Better than any other option we have.

          1. ceetar

I’d rather Carter or Catalanotto there. I don’t think it’s a bias as much as observation.

Even if you just wanna go Carter and Cat are hot right now, and Tatis hasn’t gotten a hit since September.

          2. trs86

Again the Mets will most likely start Jacobs. Thus he needs a RH platoon guy to go with him and Tatis hits LHP better than any of them. He would not be playing that much anyway.

    2. metsfan4decades

I think he’s gonna strike out a ton, probably no way around that.
But I’ll take getting hot if it means he plays a good defense and does some hitting.
No reason to think he can’t have a hot streak for these several weeks. Even guys with not so good stats have been known to do that for a time.

Heck, look at GMJ. He did it for one whole year. Got him a big contract for that but he then came back down to earth.

  15. DNDJohan aka kistics

Does anyone know where I can download the ‘Meet the Mets’ ringtone?

    1. ceetar

as a ringtone, or a .wav file? I’ve got it on my computer.

  16. trs86

    Good defense there GMJR.

    1. trs86

Maine struggling now. Should have been out of the inning.

  17. asod75

The thing is, even if the Mets wanted to acquire a pitcher (and I’m sure they do), it’s going to be awfully tough because teams know how desperate the Mets are given the uncertainies/enigmas that are Maine, Perez and Pelfrey. Last thing you want to do is deal a few premium prospects for a short-term fix. Unfortunately, I’m really starting to believe it’s MOP or bust….

    1. metsfan4decades

      For now, that’s probably true.
Should be more options come mid season.

      1. asod75

Let’s just hope the offense can score enough runs to make it matter by then. I honestly like the makeup of this offense and bench (especially if Carter makes the cut). And I would feel a whole lot better if they had a true reliable No. 2 starter behind Johan. If MOP can just pitch decently, say to a 4.00 to 4.50 ERA (strange how that’s decent these days) and they get enough help behind K-Rod and Pedro in the pen, this team will contend. If not, it won’t…..

        1. trs86

Take a look at last year’s starter ERA for the Mets. That’s with Livan, Redding, Misch, Figgy, Perez, Maine, Pelfrey, etc. They were around league average. That’s with Santana having an off year.

          1. asod75

Pitching everywhere is in a crummy state, because that’s surprising.

          2. trs86

Better numbers than FLA, ARI, SD, MIL teams that normally have decent pitching.

  18. asod75

    Hey Mr. Igarashi,
Anytime you want to have a clean inning is fine by us. Is it a total given that he’s in the pen? I know he signed a guaranteed deal, but since this is his first year in the majors, he’s got to have options. He’s looked terrible.

    1. trs86

Give him some time to adjust. Perhaps having grip issues or something.

      1. njstuckintx

Kung Fu Grip? Yes, I went there.

      2. asod75

I’m fine with that TRS, as he certainly had decent numbers in Japan (but then again, so did Satoru Komiyama aka Japanese Greg Maddux who pitched more like Mike Maddux). My question is, can Igarashi do said adjusting in the minors?

        1. trs86

          don’t know.

  19. metsfan4decades

John Maine has a stomach virus. Had to run in, in between innings and use the ‘facilities’. Come the 5th inning, he said he had absolutely nothing left.

So he gets a pass….And not a bad effort for the first 3 innings considering.

    1. metsgirl31

I can’t imagine trying to pitch with those issues. That’s got to be rough.

    2. trs86

After that defense in the 5th I would be sick too.

    3. asod75

The first time I made it to CitiField was a game in late May against the Marlins. Maine was dominating, but came out early. Turns out he had a stomach virus then. Mets went on to win as F-Mart hit a key RBI double down the left-field line late in the game. K-Rod nailed down the save, Mets were in first place. All was right with the world. Then the rest of the season happened…..

      1. metsfan4decades

        I remember that game…

        1. asod75

The very next game was the beginning of the end. I’m on the flight home to Florida, thrilled that there was satellite radio so I could listen to the Mets’ game. They were playing the Pirates in Pittsburgh and raced out to an early 5-0 lead. The Pirates chipped away and then J.J. Putz imploded late and the Mets lose 7-5 or 8-5, something like that. Putz is shelved with an elbow injury soon after that, the Mets either got swept or lost 3 of 4, and the carnage was just beginning….

  20. metsfan4decades

Guys, here’s the thing I’ve been thinking about all week.

Outside of Johan/MOP, there were others coming into ST vying for that 5th spotter start – and to a lesser extend a BP spot.

Outside of KRod and Pedro, there was no one else really who was a lock for the BP.

Given that, the rest can’t possibly be ‘tinkering’.
Also given that, the only one I saw that did everything they could to prove they should have a spot is Figgy (sorry, TRS).

IMO, at this point, I’d have to say ‘Houston, we have a problem’.

If these guys don’t turn a corner next week, this BP is going to kill us.

    1. trs86

      And Misch.

      1. metsfan4decades

Yeah, and where is he right now?
Anyone have a clue what the FO is thinking at this point?

        1. trs86

          AAA, cleared waivers.

          Some other guys looking better.

          1. metsfan4decades

lol – I knew that. and yeah – glad he did clear waivers.
Others should be looking better but they’ve been so hit or miss.

Maybe, just maybe, the lot of them are confused on whether they should be auditioning for a SP slot, 8th inning slot, long man spot, whatever. And maybe it’s affecting them to an extent. It shouldn’t be, but maybe it is.

          2. trs86

Could be spring training. LOL. Sorry had to go there.

          3. metsgirl31

Pitching is usually behind the hitting beginning of the season, right?

          4. trs86

LOL, supposed to be the opposite.

          5. metsgirl31

            It was a reach…

      2. asod75

        And, gulp, Elmer Dessens.

        1. trs86

I think we should carry him. He pitched well last year and he’s just a GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guy.

          1. asod75

We’d have the Elmer-Figs “good guy duo” in the pen. But since Dessens might have trouble striking you or me out, I think he’ll enjoy Buffalo this year, unless some other team needs a “good guy.”

          2. trs86

Here’s the scary part. He has about 800 more innings than Figgy and 250 more games. So Elmer Dessens is a more accomplished MLB pitcher than Figgy.

    2. ceetar

      no. don’t buy in.

It’s Spring Training. tinkering is just one excuse. But pitchers don’t pitch the same way, hitters don’t hit the same way. Everything is different once they’re in front of the fans in a real game. Unfortunately, the manager is incapable of properly evaluating anybody, and shows no confidence in his guys.

      1. metsfan4decades

Yeah, but is it Jerry who makes the decision who goes north in the BP?

        1. trs86

No not ultimately. Omar muttered something about giving Jerry that choice but who knows if that’ true?

  21. trs86

    Valdes getting robbed too.

    1. metsfan4decades

That is true. Haven’t seen enough of him – very small sample size – but what I saw I liked.

    2. trs86

Man, it may not be our pitching it may be our defense.

      1. metsfan4decades

        Also a good point.

  22. metsfan4decades

LOL – on that note, Green comes in and gives a stellar performance.

I’ve officially given up trying to figure out who would be the best to bring north for this BP.

  23. metsgirl31

My eyes are playing tricks on me…did Sean Green just strike out the side?

    1. metsfan4decades

LOL – not unless my eyes are deceiving me too.

  24. metsfan4decades

What in all that is holy is SNY thinking?
Not only are they discussing that triple play last year, they have to show it?

That’s right behind the Castillo pop up – if I never see it again it’ll be too soon.

    1. metsgirl31

I fail to see the humor in the situation…they should NOT be laughing

      1. metsfan4decades

Yeah, laughing is not the first reaction I have when watching that….

  25. metsfan4decades

Wild pitches, passed balls, wide throws, missed plays.
    Shades of ’09….

  26. Kingman 26

Well, glad to see Maine is as ready as Ollie and Pelf!

    MOP! MOP! MOP!

    1. metsfan4decades

See my earlier comment. Gary reported after Maine was taken out that he has a stomach virus. Had to keep running in between innings to use the ‘facilities’. Said come the 5th inning, he had nothing left at all.

    2. trs86

Maine actually pitched decent. Hate to be the Debbie Downer here.

      1. trs86

Gave up a HR in the 4th to score 2 runs. Then in the 5th should have been out of the inning. 2 outs and walks Harris, gives up a single that is deflected by Tejada another single and then a double on a dropped ball to GMJR.

        1. ceetar

I seem to recall Maine having this issue before. Weak stomach to go with his weak shoulder? regardless, even more reason not to take stats seriously in spring.

          1. Mr North Jersey

Well at least by this time next week we will no longer be talking about arm angles or tinkering but rather how hey it’s only one start.

          2. ceetar

            And when he’s 4-0 in April with a 2.9 ERA..hey, it’s only April.

          3. Kingman 26

            Come on; that’s ridiculous!

          4. ceetar

He was 4-1 with a 2.75 ERA in May last year. Why not in April of this?

          5. Kingman 26

Maybe I misunderstood—I thought you were saying that if he did well in April, people would discount it and say “Hey it’s only April.”

          6. ceetar

I was saying that. And people will.

          7. Kingman 26

Well, I certainly won’t be saying that.

          8. GravediggerHebner

People will fairly say things like that about this team until it faces a challenge to make the post season and succeeds at it. That’s the only scenario that will stop the doubt and second guessing.

Even if the team coasts wire-to-wire winning the division, they won’t have answered the valid questions about themselves. Only by winning a close fight for a post season spot will the demons of 2007-2008 be exorcised.

So yes, if Maine is 4-1, 2.75 in April, it won’t mean a whole lot to anyone who knows the calendar will eventually turn to September. That doesn’t mean I won’t enjoy or appreciate that he’s 4-1, 2.75. But I’ll know it’s just one month, the first in a six month season.

          9. Kingman 26

Yeah, but a 4-1, 2.75 April for Maine sure will be a good omen!

          10. GravediggerHebner

            Agreed.

      2. Kingman 26

        4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 BB, 4 ER?

        Decent?

I am glad Fong and Wanny are busy today…..

        1. GravediggerHebner

In watching the game unfold today, this was my reaction.

After 3 innings: “finally, a starting pitcher getting positive results. This is what I’ve been waiting for since March 5th.”

          After 4 2/3 innings: “oh well…”

But actually, because it was Maine who was already behind as it is, I was OK with his falling apart at the end. He’s behind. I didn’t expect 7 innings. I expected 5, and he almost got it. Then when they announced that he had a stomach virus, I was even more OK with his outing.

Kingman if I could look you in the eye I would when saying “this was the best and most encouraging outing by a Met starting pitcher this spring.” And I would mean it, no April Fools joke in that. Are the results still not good? Yes, but for a last start of ST, from a guy who’s behind schedule and sick to his stomach, I saw what I wanted.

          1. Kingman 26

I can agree, especially if he was sick.

But if I could look you in the eye, after many compliments, the first thing I would say would be to tell you how right you were about how desperately we needed Lackey.

Of course, he might not have come here for $20 mil per, but you were right sir.

          2. trs86

It’s not always about stats. He pitched well and in the 5th inning tired and fell victim to luck and bad defense.

          3. Kingman 26

OK, we’ll tell the league office that when he loses his first start 11-6.

          4. trs86

            OK.

  27. ceetar

I’m trying to reserve judgement until OPening Day, but it doesn’t feel like they’re going to make the right roster moves. And I’m already having flashbacks at the poor managerial decisions with thinks like randomly walking guys to set up odd matchups or giving away 3-4 outs a game.

    1. metsfan4decades

I have absolutely no idea what they’re going to do.

As far as pitching, the fact that they’re giving a long look at a Mexican loaned Valdes tells us all we probably need to know about what they think of the state of the BP…

You know they’ll go with Jacobs. And although I’d rather see Carter, my guess is they go with Cat.

Who are they gonna replace Reyes with? I say Tejada should be added. After what I saw today, It should NOT be Adams.

      1. trs86

        Could be Cintron.

        1. ceetar

I can’t help but think of Absolut Citron when I here his name.

          1. Kingman 26

If you like that, try Hangar One’s lime and lemon flavors—AMAZINGLY good and smooth vodka.

          2. ceetar

I’ll keep it in mind, though I’ve been laying off the hard stuff mostly lately. :-D

More of a gin and tequila person usually.

          3. Kingman 26

If you know of gins which are as good or better as Tanqueray Rangpur or Bombay Sapphire, please share!

          4. GravediggerHebner

            Gins make me projectile vomit.

          5. Kingman 26

LOL! Well, bourbon is my favorite, but I do like me some vodka and gin too.

But I do not drink gin straight, I will give you that.

  28. trs86

Cat describes himself as an OF that can play an emergency IF. LOL, why the hell do we need that?

  29. trs86

Calero looking good. If he is healthy he really should have the setup role.

    1. metsfan4decades

I’m good with that right now.

  30. metsfan4decades

On another note, Phils placed Blanton on the DL. Will be out 3-6 weeks.

‘As such, Ken Rosenthal of FoxSports.com says the Phillies are looking for pitching, “but there is not much out there,” he quotes a source as saying.’

    Yeah, tell us about it….

  31. metsfan4decades

Ronnie says: ‘I believe Valdes made the BP today with his back to back good efforts’.

At this point, I’m not even going to try and predict who they select for the BP outside of KRod and Pedro.

Won’t see KRod until the season starts. He was allowed to go back home to take care of some personal issues.

    1. GravediggerHebner

Well, Sunday into Monday won’t be boring, as we’ll have about 5 roster spot surprises unveiled for us.

      1. metsfan4decades

        LOL.

Is that when they need to set the 25 man roster by? Sunday at midnight?
I can’t believe they wouldn’t give those that are still unsure at least a Sat. notice. If they need to give last looks at the game on Sat., we’re in deep trouble.

I saw somewhere there would be no roster cuts today.

I’m not sure if they were being facetious or not but Ronnie & Gary were talking about it and suggested that the final rosters needed to be in “an hour before the game.”

I assume they’ll take care of any cuts/announcements after Saturday’s exhibition game.

2pm Sunday rosters need to be finalized and submitted.

And that could change 1 week after that. They could leave Perez in ST or something if he is going to be the #5.

better not lose someone else on waivers, so by mid-April when Valdes is a train wreck, they have someone to replace him with.

Why do I have this sinking suspicion the shuttle will be very busy the first part of the season?

Didn’t Stick tell you? After the parade, we are leasing the Parade Float to the Mets to use as the secondary Queens-Buffalo-Binghamton Shuttle.

Figgy already has purchased a season pass.

          :-)

            The float goes to Japan?

          2. Kingman 26

            Yes! It is amphibious!

It used to be one of those Duck Tour things which take people on tours of cities like Seattle on land and water…we got a great deal on it.

          3. Kingman 26

And for Figgy, the Japan trip will be ONE WAY ONLY.
