I think TRS is really Rich Coutinho
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/mets/post/_/id/115/spring-training-stats-dont-be-fooled
Scary how close to the same argument he and TRS are making.

Yes, the same irrelevant argument—picking out a handful of pitchers who have had bad stats—most of who are excellent like Johan—is completely different than looking at a team where almost every pitcher who will go north has been awful.
In addition, it is completely irrelevant to the argument many make that spring stats are of course meaningful for pitchers who are fighting for a spot—how did the Mets choose to demote Parnell and keep Mejia? If their stats were switched, would Parnell would be in AAA and Mejia in Queens?
Citing a dozen or two established successful pitchers with bad spring ERAs is completely irrelevant to examining an entire team’s spring pitching performance, or arguing that spring stats for guys fighting for the team are meaningless.

Obviously, when there’s competition the spring stats will be used to compare, but other than that, spring training performance correlates to regular season performance like ummmm uhhhhhh I can’t think of the proper metaphor but you get the point. Spring training stats don’t matter for major leaguers.

So, spring training stats didn’t matter for Parnell?
Come on.

Oops, reread your comment and you did say they mattered for competition.

“You know when Mike Pelfrey had his best spring — 2007 — he proceeded to lose his first seven decisions in the regular season. You know when Jeff Francoeur had his worst spring trainings, he compiled over 100 RBIs each year with the Atlanta Braves.”

As I remember, in 2008, Maine, Heilman, and every single Met bullpen pitcher was unhittable in the spring, even Schoeneweis.
I guess that wasn’t a good predictor!
OK, I won’t cite this anymore…it’s less than 48 hours till the opener!

4/3/2010-1:53pm at 1:53 pm (UTC -4)
Wow if that was the case then that just further makes Rich’s argument.

4/3/2010-1:56pm at 1:56 pm (UTC -4)
It was the case…I remember thinking after 2007 and the spring of 2008 that Maine would win the Cy Young….every pen pitcher was lights out in the spring of 2008.
See, I am honest, even when certain facts don’t support my 2010 argument!

Jason Fry over on Faith and Fear in Flushing opens up his post ‘Before Doom Comes Optimism’ with:
‘This falls under the heading of Things I’d Dearly Like to Be Proved Wrong About, but I suspect the dominant storyline of the 2010 Mets will be how long it takes even the most optimistic among us to concede that the team isn’t going anywhere.’
‘The Mets’ plan for the offseason was either bizarre or not worthy of the name, the starting pitching looks so thin you can see through it, the relief corps consists of Pedro Feliciano and guys who are either unknown quantities or depressingly known ones, two core offensive players will start the season on the shelf, and there are already signs that the decision-makers are looking at short-term fixes even if those create long-term problems. (I love Jenrry Mejia. He shouldn’t be here.)’
‘The 2010 Mets look like a disaster in the making. At this point it’s useless to carp that it didn’t have to be this way, so I will resolutely fix my gaze ahead, to where the view is no more encouraging. I’ll give it until about May 15 before towels start getting thrown in, and June 15 before the incurable optimists experience a medical breakthrough.’
He goes on to say all is not lost because we saw just enough in ST to have hope for 2011 and beyond.
Ouch……

Wow. I think he needs to find a new team before he does irreparable harm to himself. I won’t miss him. I wonder what he would have written before the 69 & 86 Teams. 2010 aren’t those squads but take ’86 for instance, constantly being trumped by the Cards, how could they ever overcome the white rat? Or 69,these guys have never done anything, season over before the first pitch. Stop whining, start winning. How do you choose to be a Mets fan and not know what you’re signing on for. Puhleeze, give me a break. In closing to paraphrase our great ’73 skipper “it ain’t over till it’s over”, so how can it be over before it begins?

Before ‘69 Mets fans went out to the ballpark to have fun; expecting not a thing but hoping for a competitive game. And even if the game was not competitive people still found ways to enjoy themselves. It was before the internet and no one took the ball club seriously. Thus ‘69 came as complete surprise to the fan base and the season was a joy to behold. The ‘86 team was the culmination of Cashen’s rebuilding a franchise that was thoroughly destroyed by M. Donald Grant. With no internet to speak of and sports talk radio being somewhat limited people showed their displeasure of M. Donald Grant by not attending the ball games. People did show their appreciation of the ‘84 and ‘85 teams by giving the players a round of applause at season’s end.

As I head out to Albany then to NYC for opening day, let me say: despite my pessimism surrounding the rotation and distaste for certain managers and GMs, opening day has me excited and giddy for this season to finally start. I’m sure I’ll see a few of you down at Citi on Monday, and I’m looking forward to loudly cheering on our guys as Santana carves up the Marlins’ lineup like a Thanksgiving turkey.
Cheers! Let’s go METS!

Niese falling apart here in the 5th. 5 straight hits, another communication breakdown in the OF between Pagan and GMJ which results in no one catching the ball, and a grand slam….

Why the fck is Green in the BP?
Why the fck is Mejia not in AA?
Why the fck is our SP behind Johan atrocious(regardless of ST numbers)?
Why the fck did we not adress position issues?
Why the fck is Omar still our GM? How the fck did he get a job?
Why the fck is Jerry Manuel still our manager?
Why the fck is the IQ of the fanbase, even 5 year old Mets fans greater than our FO’s?
Why the fck are we ok with this?
Mr North Jersey
4/3/2010-3:54pm at 3:54 pm (UTC -4)
Why the fck is Green in the BP?
Because of $975,000.00
Why the fck is Mejia not in AA?
Because he is the Mets best option to get a big strikeout late in the game.
Why the fck is our SP behind Johan atrocious(regardless of ST numbers)?
Because Minaya decided to give them one more shot to show last season was due to injuries.
Why the fck did we not adress position issues?
Which one would you like to address?
Why the fck is Omar still our GM? How the fck did he get a job?
Because Wilpon decided to give him another shot. / Because he has shown an ability in the past to find talent.
Why the fck is Jerry Manuel still our manager?
Because Minaya said this is his last hurrah also.
Why the fck is the IQ of the fanbase, even 5 year old Mets fans greater than our FO’s?
Because it is your opinion is that it is so it is.
Why the fck are we ok with this?
Who is we? Not me that is for sure.

Lennon tweeted that yesterday. There is no reason he shouldn’t be there.
However, it’ll be an easy thing to tell. There is no way Reyes is going to ‘sneak’ onto the field without someone tweeting it or reporting it, and if we see Tejada there at all, it’s obvious Reyes won’t be. But damn, if this happens and someone tweets it Monday morning, someone better text me! There weren’t anyfree wireless networks at Citi Field last year so I won’t be able to check twitter or anything!

Apparently the Mets are giving Calero the option to refuse to go to AAA. Green in the bullpen and Calero a soon to be FA. Way to go Omar. Go fck yourself.

Listened to the game. Sigh….
Niese gets a longer leash just by nature of the fact it should be his first full season in the majors. Calbera(?) should have never come to bat in the 5th to hit that grand slam (don’t know what in the heck GMJ and Pagan were doing out there). However, he did give up 3 or 4 straight singles before that and after that dropped fly ball, he has to get an out, not give up a dinger…
Starting pitchers aside a minute, there is no way this BP is just ‘tinkering’. No one outside of KRod and Pedro were a lock. And doesn’t anyone but me find it ironic the two who were the longest shot to make the BP were the two who pitched the best in ST? (Figgy, Misch) What’s up with the rest? Green, as usual, showed what my eyes have been seeing for a season now. He just is not consistent enough to throw out there. If he can’t get outs with the bases empty, how can you bring him in with men on?
I’m very much afraid this pitching staff, as currently constructed, is going to pitch just – well – enough, to make me crazy…..
Kingman 26
4/3/2010-4:42pm at 4:42 pm (UTC -4)
The pitching staff is going to be a complete disaster, but the offense, defense and baserunning are going to combine to still make us a .500+ team….

Well according to Adam Rubin we don’t need to worry about Mejia’s development because Omar says there’s another Mejia:
THE NEXT MEJIA: General manager Omar Minaya insists there’s another Jenrry Mejia in the pipeline. He’s right-hander Armando Rodriguez, who is ticketed for low-A Savannah. The 22-year-old Rodriguez, who was signed in 2007 out of the Dominican Republic, went a combined 5-2 with a 2.74 ERA in 12 starts between Class A Kingsport and Savannah last season.

4/3/2010-6:10pm at 6:10 pm (UTC -4)
Not worried about his development. He’ll either be awesome and be awesome next year as a starter or he’ll suck and go to AA and work on it.
